Chapter 154 -  Apprentice Challenge!

Back in Luocheng, Oliver had allowed Gabite to absorb Electric-type energy several more times.

But the effect diminished with each attempt.

Eventually, Gabite even began to feel that some of the newly absorbed Electric energy could no longer be fully converted.

For safety's sake, Oliver immediately ordered him to stop.

His conclusion was simple:

Even Landorus required both wind and lightning to maintain internal balance.

Gabite had absorbed too much Electric energy.

If he continued, there was a risk of elemental instability—perhaps even an energy backlash.

To keep progressing—

He needed Flying-type energy to balance the lightning within him.

Otherwise, the accumulated power might spiral out of control.

Rongcheng Flying-Type Gym

When Oliver entered the Rongcheng Gym lobby, wearing a mask, the receptionist blinked in confusion.

She stared at him for a moment—

Then suddenly covered her mouth.

"Y-you're Oliver! You haven't been here in so long!"

Oliver smiled slightly.

"I was busy."

Back when he was researching Fairy-type energy for his paper, he had frequently conducted tests at Rongcheng Gym. Over time, the receptionist had become quite familiar with him.

Only later did she realize what monumental achievement that young man had accomplished.

And after that—

He never returned.

Seeing her excitement nearly erupt into a scream, Oliver gently placed a finger over his mask.

"Shh. I'm here for business. Please don't make it public."

She nodded vigorously.

"Of course! I won't tell anyone!"

"Thank you. I'd like to challenge a Gym apprentice. Can you arrange that?"

"Right away. Any requirements?"

"Preferably Senior-level."

"Understood!"

She quickly operated her computer and connected to an internal voice channel.

"Apprentice challenge request—Senior-level preferred. Anyone available?"

"Most of us are in matches."

"Looks like only Lu Ming is free."

"Where is he? He's usually the most eager."

"Here, here! Just finished training with the Gym Leader. I'm coming!"

"Getting private lessons again? Not bad, kid. Don't embarrass Rongcheng Gym out there!"

"Hah! I'm going to become a Flying-type Heavenly King someday! Just watch!"

The Meaning of a Gym Apprentice

Gym apprentices weren't random trainees.

Every single one was personally selected by the Gym Leader.

Being accepted meant:

Talent.

Potential.

Promise.

They were taught exclusive techniques and battle philosophies directly by the Gym Leader.

In essence—

They were disciples.

But theory alone wasn't enough.

A true Trainer had to grow through battle.

That was why many Gyms offered public apprentice challenges.

It allowed apprentices to:

Gain real combat experience.

Earn supplemental income.

Strengthen the Gym's prestige.

Oliver, of course, heard none of their internal conversation.

But he soon heard a bold voice behind him.

"I'm here! Who wants to challenge me?"

He turned.

A man in his late twenties approached confidently.

Buzz-cut.

Wearing the official apprentice uniform.

Strong build. Straight posture.

There was unmistakable self-assurance in his stride.
