Chapter 13 - chapter 13

A police car was chasing a stolen car at full speed.

"He turned left, right there, hurry, speed up!" shouted one of the officers.

The car followed and, upon reaching the curve, executed a perfect drift, continuing the pursuit.

Meanwhile, inside the black car:

"Faster, go faster!" said one of the thieves, worry in his eyes.

"I'm going as fast as I can! It's all your fault! If you hadn't taken so long robbing that woman, we wouldn't be in this situation!" retorted the man at the wheel.

"You idiot! Just step on it! I don't want to go to jail!" the other shot back, frustrated.

As they tried to escape the police, they ran every red light, nearly causing accidents repeatedly. They were now in the city center, and as time passed, more police cars seemed to appear.

In their desperation, they eventually ran out of options and were forced onto a bridge crossing a river. The bridge was long, and at the end, a group of armed police officers had appeared, blocking the way and surrounding the passage.

"You idiot, look what you've done!" one of the thieves said in despair.

"If you hadn't been getting on my nerves... You should have just kept your mouth shut, you distracted me! Damn it, what are we going to do now?" said the driver, also scared.

As they descended into panic and fear, the driver got distracted and ended up swerving into the oncoming lane.

To their misfortune, a truck was coming head-on at that very moment.

"Shit..."

But before they could collide, the truck driver jerked the wheel to the side, sending the truck crashing through the bridge's guardrail.

The truck hit the railing, which wasn't very strong, and went careening off the bridge.

Meanwhile, the stolen car, in a panic, swerved the other way but followed the same path as the truck.

However, they weren't as lucky as the truck driver. Their car was much smaller and lighter, so it didn't break through the guardrail but instead went flying over it.

They crashed, and one was thrown through the windshield, while the other was crushed and died instantly.

The chaos from the two vehicles reverberated and, like a snowball, grew, causing a series of other accidents.

Meanwhile, in the area where the police were waiting on the other side of the bridge, they witnessed the entire situation unfold.

"Call a medical team and the fire department, now! Move quickly, there might still be survivors! One team should go down and check the truck, the others follow me!" commanded the most experienced officer.

"Yes, Captain!"

They split up. Some ran and descended the bridge, while others got into their cars and headed to the middle of the span.

The squad approached the area where the injured were. They got out of their car and began checking on everyone who appeared hurt.

Meanwhile, the captain went to what seemed to be the worst scene.

The man from the black car showed no signs of life, completely dead, trapped in the wreckage.

Not wasting time, he went to check the others but was startled when a shadow passed over his head.

Meanwhile, moments earlier...

James was following the thieves from above.

He kept his eyes fixed on them, tracking wherever they went.

Should I go down there and stop this? he thought. To be honest, it would be very easy to simply descend and interrupt the situation.

Landing and placing himself in front of the moving car would be easy, but...

If I do that, wouldn't it attract too much attention? he pondered.

A police chase was very common. If he wanted to get Vought's attention, he would have to get involved in bigger cases than this.

So, for the sake of the plan, he let it play out.

Over time, the chase led to a bridge.

With his vision, he saw that where the thieves were headed, there were police officers, and they would most likely be caught.

At that moment, he thought about descending and intervening to take all the credit for himself.

But before he could, the guys in the black car swerved into the oncoming lane, and right then, a truck was coming.

These two... are going to die... I have to go down there... It's too late, I can't... James thought.

But to his surprise, the truck swerved and went off the bridge. One of the guys from the car was thrown out and fell into the river.

At that moment, he froze slightly.

Who should I save? James asked himself.

That guy is in a worse situation... but he kind of deserved it, while that truck driver is innocent. But if I do that... Damn it, what am I thinking? I'll save both of them, that's it. Damn it, he thought.

Immediately, he descended at high speed and headed under the bridge, toward the river.

The truck had clearly fallen into the river and was sinking.

He used his eyes to assess the truck driver's situation, then dove into the water.

Poor man, he was trapped inside the cab. The water pressure completely prevented him from escaping. At the very least, he would have to break the window to get out, but in that state, it would be nearly impossible without something to break it with.

James didn't hesitate. He approached the truck and grabbed it.

That's right, he grabbed it. He used his hands to seize the cab and then pulled it out of the water.

The rest of the truck was still attached, so it all came out together.

Then, James floated and rose until he was above the bridge.

The truck driver, who was still inside, didn't understand anything. I was about to drown, and now... I'm breathing? What's happening?

Meanwhile, the people on the bridge who were okay took out their phones and started recording.

"What is that? Is it Homelander?"

"Is it a superhero?"

"Who is that? I don't know him, but he's really strong."

"Is the truck flying by itself?"

"Mommy, what is that?"

A wave of questions and chatter erupted on the bridge. Even the police officers were equally curious.

Then, the stranger carrying the truck, which weighed countless tons with ease, approached the part of the bridge where they were. He descended and gently set the truck down on the bridge as if he were holding a cup or something equally light.

After that, he approached who seemed to be the captain of the police officers and asked:

"Is everyone okay? Does anyone else need help?"

"Yes... yes, actually, there are some people trapped in the wreckage, but it's better to leave them there for now. We don't know the full extent of their injuries yet," the officer replied.

James, of course, understood. In accidents like this, it was better to leave victims trapped until doctors and specialists arrived, as removing them could worsen their condition.

"I understand. Excuse me, because there's someone else I need to help..." James said.

Then, he floated up and quickly dove back into the river. He pulled a person out and brought them to the officer.

"I got him. He's still alive, but his condition isn't good. A lot of water got into his lungs," James said.

The officer was surprised. He hadn't expected this guy to still be alive.

"Thank you for getting him." Immediately, he began performing CPR or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. James didn't pay much attention; he wasn't interested in watching two men kiss.

So instead, he floated up and sat on the bridge's support beams, lounging up there. His job was done—he had done what he could. Now, he just had to stay there to attract attention, and after the situation was resolved and a few more people took pictures of him, he would leave.

Sometime later, the paramedics arrived, and everything sort of worked out. Then, he left.

Naturally, all the civilians were very curious about the stranger sitting above their heads on the bridge's support beams and took the opportunity to post this kind of thing on the internet.

In the end, James left. It was still early, so he took the opportunity to handle some other minor crimes.
