Chapter 41 - Bad Rebound

The countdown had begun.

In just a few days, the entire league would witness it again — the collision everyone had been waiting for.

Buffalo vs. Komodo.

Not just another game.

Not just another mark in the standings.

This was something else now.

A rivalry born from pride… sharpened by defeat… and fueled by unfinished business.

Komodo: Silence Before the Storm

Inside Komodo's training facility, the doors were shut tight.

No media.

No cameras.

No distractions.

Only the sound of sneakers grinding against hardwood… and heavy breathing echoing through the gym.

Coach Fran stood at center court, arms crossed, eyes scanning every movement.

"Again," he said.

No yelling.

No wasted words.

Just one command.

And the players obeyed.

George drove hard to the basket — stronger, faster than before — finishing through contact. Jimmy fought inside, absorbing hits as if pain no longer mattered. Diwa sprinted every drill like it was the final seconds of a championship game.

No one laughed.

No one joked.

Even during water breaks, there was no chatter.

Just silence… and focus.

Because every single one of them carried the same thought:

We let that game slip.

George paused at the free-throw line, hands on his hips, sweat dripping down his chin.

"I won't let him take that shot again," he muttered.

No one asked who he meant.

They all knew.

Across the court, John Cruz practiced his shooting — again and again from the corner. Each release was sharp. Controlled.

He wasn't just preparing to win.

He was preparing to face his past.

Coach Fran finally spoke again, his voice calm but heavy.

"They think they've arrived."

He looked at each of them.

"Show them they're still chasing."

The message didn't need repeating.

Komodo wasn't just preparing to win.

They were preparing to make a statement.

Buffalo: The Weight of Being Unbeaten

Across the city, Buffalo's gym carried a different kind of energy.

Still intense.

But louder.

More alive.

Balls bounced rhythmically. Teammates called out plays. Sneakers squeaked in sharp bursts.

They weren't hiding.

They were sharpening.

But beneath that energy was something new…

Pressure.

Coach Ed stood near the sideline, watching closely.

"Again!" he shouted.

Elias drove to the basket — strong, controlled — finishing with a soft touch off the glass.

"Faster recovery!" Coach Ed barked.

Tony sprinted back on defense, chest heaving, sweat soaking his jersey.

During a short break, Tony grabbed a towel and looked at Elias.

"They're coming at us hard this time."

Elias nodded. "Good."

But his eyes said more.

He knew it wouldn't be the same Komodo.

Not this time.

Coach Ed gathered them midcourt.

"Listen carefully," he said, voice firm.

"Complacency… will destroy everything you've built."

The players fell silent.

"You're undefeated. Thirteen and zero. Everyone's talking about you."

He pointed toward them one by one.

"But none of that matters if you step on that court thinking you've already proven something."

His voice lowered.

"Because Komodo? They're not thinking about your record."

A pause.

"They're thinking about revenge."

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Real.

Elias clenched his jaw slightly.

He understood.

This wasn't about streaks anymore.

This was war.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Practice resumed.

Intensity rose.

Every drill felt sharper.

Every possession more physical.

Then it happened.

A simple rebounding drill.

Something they had done hundreds of times.

Cholo took the shot.

The ball bounced hard off the rim.

Tony and Elias both reacted instantly.

Two of the team's fiercest competitors.

Both driven.

Both unwilling to give up even a single possession.

They jumped.

At the same time.

Bodies collided mid-air.

Tony, bigger and heavier, secured position first.

He came down strong.

Elias managed to grab the ball… but—

His foot landed awkwardly.

Right on Tony's shoe.

Twist.

A sharp, unnatural bend.

Then—

"Ahh—!"

Elias hit the floor.

Hard.

The gym froze.

For a split second, no one moved.

Then chaos.

"Elias!"

Cholo dropped the ball and sprinted over.

John Paul rushed in from the wing.

Santino's face turned pale.

Tony stood frozen… then immediately dropped to his knees beside him.

"Hey… hey… talk to me," Tony said, panic rising in his voice.

Elias clenched his teeth, gripping his ankle.

"Don't move him," Coach Ed ordered sharply, already rushing in.

The energy in the gym had completely changed.

From intensity…

To fear.

Fear and Guilt

Tony's hands trembled.

"I didn't mean— I didn't—"

His voice broke.

Elias looked at him despite the pain.

"It's not your fault," he managed to say, though his breathing was uneven.

But Tony shook his head.

"I should've called it… I should've—"

The guilt hit him hard.

Because players understood something deeply:

Injuries don't just hurt the body.

They hit the heart of a team.

Team doctor Donna arrived quickly, kneeling beside Elias.

"Let me see," she said calmly.

She carefully examined the ankle, her fingers pressing lightly.

Elias winced.

The entire team watched in silence.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Even the bouncing of balls had stopped.

The gym, once loud and alive… was now heavy with worry.

Donna finally looked up.

"We need to get him ice immediately."

Tony swallowed hard.

"Doc… he'll play, right?"

Donna didn't answer immediately.

And that silence…

Said everything.

The Words No One Wanted to Hear

Later, inside the locker room, the atmosphere felt suffocating.

Elias sat with his ankle wrapped, ice pressed firmly against it.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Tony stood near the corner, unable to sit, unable to look at anyone.

Coach Ed entered with Donna.

All eyes turned to them.

Donna spoke gently, but clearly.

"He needs to rest."

Silence.

"And there's a strong possibility… he won't be able to play in the upcoming game."

The words hit like a punch.

Cholo looked down immediately.

John Paul ran his hands through his hair.

Santino leaned back against the locker, staring at the ceiling.

Tony finally sat down, head in his hands.

"No…" he whispered.

Elias closed his eyes briefly.

Not in anger.

Not in frustration.

But in acceptance.

Because he knew his body.

He knew something wasn't right.

Coach Ed stepped forward.

"This isn't over," he said firmly.

His voice cut through the silence.

"We don't fall apart because of this."

He looked directly at Elias.

"We adjust."

Then to the rest of the team.

"We fight."

A Different Kind of Battle

That night, the Buffalo gym felt emptier than usual.

Not because players weren't there.

But because something was missing.

Their leader.

Their closer.

Their MVP.

Tony stayed behind longer than anyone else.

He stood under the rim, staring at it.

Replaying the moment again and again in his head.

The jump.

The landing.

The twist.

"I'm sorry…" he whispered, though no one was there to hear it.

Across the city, Komodo continued their closed-door training.

Unaware…

Or maybe just unconcerned.

Because for them, one thing was clear:

The rematch was coming.

And they were ready to take everything back.

But now, the story had changed.

What was once a clash of equals…

Had become something more uncertain.

More fragile.

More dangerous.

Because when the undefeated team loses its heart, even for a moment…

Everything becomes possible.
