Chapter 2 - A Slave in the Conqueror’s Den

Raina's POV

My breath hitched in my throat as I opened my mouth to speak. To say something. To reach out to them before their eyes could close forever. The look on my mother's face would forever haunt me. It was a pitiful one, and if she could say anything to me, I know she would assure me that everything would be fine, that I would do just fine even in their absence. Her eyes remained pinned on me as she gargled on her blood, and soon, her eyes shut for good. She and father were dead and gone, while Reya was missing. My knees buckled underneath me, and I fell, with my knees hitting the ground. My world was shattered, and all that is left is my life, as wretched as it would be henceforth. The ground shook with the impact of the explosions from a distance, and since the catastrophic attack was swift, it did not take long for the unrest to die down. My wolf stirred within me, quite troubled and restless. I guess it has come to terms with the possibility of us dying. My head was still bent in misery when tall figure approached from the herd of warriors. It was the conqueror himself, and he towered above me with a monstrous aura. A shiver of revulsion ran through my spine as he stared down at me in a cold and unsettling manner that froze my blood more than fear ever could. He watched me like I was a joke, and as though it would be ideal to snuff life out of me like he had done to my parents. To my surprise, he walked off and as if on cue, his warriors bundled me into the carriage that had been brought alongside them. I had no choice than to comply with them for fear of being slain alongside the people of my pack. My eyes remained quite dry as I watched what remained of my peaceful pack. Ruins, rubies and piles of dead bodies. My jaw clenched voluntarily as my eyes met my parent's bodies. Even in death, their hands were still connected. I swallowed the tears that threatened to cascade down my eyes while swearing to avenge their death. My wolf howled restlessly, eager to bite into someone, to murder those who had ridden me of my parents, but I tamped it down, knowing I did not stand a chance against the savage group of raging wolves. My eyes remained on Alpha Kael Draven as the carriage started moving, ever so slowly. It was like a nightmare that had come to light, like a fear that I had hidden deep in a crevice that has finally unravelled. I tried to connect with Reya's wolf, as we were twins and had a bond, but nothing was forthcoming. Where could she be? Has she been consumed by the fire? That was never to be as Reya was like the fire as father said, has always been the fire. She had higher chances of surviving Ina fire outbreak than I, so there was no chance of the flames engulfing her. She must have been taken, but by who? My heart sank as we moved farther from the ruins of what was my pack, and soon, I could only see the smoke that simmered above. I gritted my teeth as the journey grew even longer, my wolf teetered inwardly, an inch close to snapping and causing a ruckus. All I could think about is murder, blood, assassination, beheading, Alpha Kael Draven. What surprised me is the fact that I was the only one in the carriage. What does he want to do with me? Why me? Why didn't he take I and Reya? Do I possess powers I know nothing about? Was he going to exploit it? "Get that lool off your face and start bracing up for the inevitable." A warrior snarled at me when he noticed how deep in thought I was. I slowly raised my head and stared at him. He was widely tattooed, with biceps that threatened to tear the leather attire he was on. His skin was darker than normal, and his hair fell in locks behind him. "The inevitable?" I croaked, seeking answers to the questions in my mind. "Your new life as a slave in the Alpha's household." I said nothing more till the carriage stopped in front of an enormous looking mansion. I was roughly jerked out of the car by a hand, and I winced at the pain that shot through my shoulder. However, I halted when my eyes met the majestic view. It was a luxurious mansion with stone facade, columns and balcony that stretched from distances. A large fountain oozed immaculate water and a larger than life statue of a wolf stood behind it. "Move it!" The warrior who had spoken earlier growled, and my legs that had been transfixed to the ground finally moved. "Take her to the slave quarters," Kael Draven instructed before proceeding into the mansion with the confidence of a wolf that has just cleared a pack of innocent werewolves. The quest for revenge burned in me as I watched him, and I imagined slamming his head on a rock or carving his heart out with a blunt knife. It would be so satisfying to watch. I was dragged to the slave quarters and thrown into a room that looked like it would need some cleaning. A key jingled through the knob of the door and I knew that I had been locked in. This was it? I had lived 19 years of my life only to be thrown into a desolate room as a slave for an Alpha as ruthless as Kael Draven? My eyes roved the room, and I sneezed immediately. There was so much dust, yet no cleaning materials around. I made a mental note to ask the thick haired man when next I saw him. He was the only one that had spoken with me, and he might heed to me if I asked. After what seemed like hours, the door finally swerved open and I raised my head to see a woman sauntering in with two men behind her. I needed no soothsayer to tell me that she was the mistress of the Alpha. Mates were always graceful and carried themselves with poise. She looked brazen, dressed in a sequin dress with slits that displayed her curvy hips and spotless legs. Her hair fell in ringlets behind her and a nose ring stuck out from underneath her nostrils. "Is this the new slave girl?" I heard her ask. "Yes, ma'am." "You," She pointed a heavily adorned finger at me "Come with me."
