Chapter 24 - SURVIVAL OVER DIGNITY

THE COLLAPSE OF THE HIDEOUT :

The explosion of the methane pocket had bought them a moment, but in a 30% oxygen ecosystem, silence was a luxury that expired quickly.

The concussive roar of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, combined with the chemical blast, echoed across the Gondwanan basin like a signal flare. The jungle didn't go quiet—it woke up. The shadows beyond the ferns began to shift. The heavy, rhythmic thuds of alarmed sauropods, the piercing screeches of territorial Ceratosaurs, and the frantic skittering of Dryosaurs fleeing the carnage created a wall of sound.

Then came the impact.

A fleeing, panicking Camptosaurus herd slammed directly into the granite stones and the shattered remains of their hollow tree sanctuary. The ancient wood gave out completely, splintering into thousands of sharp fragments.

"THE HIDEOUT IS DOWN!" Rexy shouted, dodging a flying piece of bark.

"RUN!" Jam's voice cut through the chaos. "GET TO THE TREELINE!"

In the blinding dust and terror, the group scattered like autumn leaves in a gale.

Before the chaos could completely pull them apart, Divine lunged through the debris, his hand locking onto Jam's torn collar. Divine's eyes were cold, sharp, and stripped of all casualness. He shoved Chaerin toward Jam with absolute force.

"Jam! Take Chaerin!" Divine roared over the deafening shrieks of the jungle. "Always protect her at any cost!"

Jam caught Chaerin by the wrist, pulling her behind his shoulder in a fluid, instinctive motion. "Got her! Don't die, Divine!"

Divine didn't waste breath answering. He turned, grabbing Shiro Kage and Rexy by their arms, pulling them with him as a panicked Allosaurus charged through the gap where their shelter used to be. Divine pivoted sharply, hauling Shiro Kage and Rexy into the dense, dark thicket to draw the predator away from Jam and Chaerin.

--

For a long time, Divine and Rexy ran blind through the pre-historic brush, the heavy footfalls of the hunting theropod slowly fading behind them as they wove through massive cycad trunks.

Eventually, the rain began to fall in heavy, warm Mesozoic sheets. Seeking cover from both the downpour and the night-hunters, Divine and Rexy stumbled upon the mouth of a hidden limestone cave built into the roots of a massive Araucarioxylon.

As they caught their breath in the shadows of the entrance, a faint sound echoed from deep within the cavern.

Gasping. Heated arguing. The crackle of burning wood.

Divine's hand dropped instinctively to the hilt of his katana. He glanced at Rexy, giving a slight nod. They crept further into the passage, stepping lightly until the damp rock walls reflected a warm, flickering orange light.

Around a small, well-kept campfire sat four strangers.

Two of them were in a heated confrontation:

Amura, wearing a half-buttoned dress shirt and looking thoroughly disheveled, was waving his hands dramatically. Karz, dressed in sharp student attire with a pair of round glasses slipping down his nose, was glaring back with clinical disdain.

Off to the side, sitting on a flat rock, were Oruen and Vortex. They were leaning back, casually chewing on roasted fern roots, watching the argument like it was a prime-time television show.

"—for the last time, leadership requires charisma and immediate action!" Amura shouted, pointing a stick at Karz. "You're trying to apply university debate logic to a swamp where giant lizards want to eat us!"

"Logic is the only thing keeping us alive, you absolute ape," Karz countered, adjusting his glasses with a stiff finger. "If we follow your 'intuition,' we'll end up as stomach acid for a Ceratosaurus by sunrise!"

Divine stepped into the firelight, his boots making a deliberate crunch on the gravel.

Karz and Amura froze. Oruen and Vortex immediately stood up, hands reaching for heavy wooden branches.

"Who goes there?" Karz demanded, trying to sound authoritative despite his trembling voice.

Divine raised a single hand, keeping his guard low but ready. "Survivors. We aren't looking for a fight."

Amura blinked, looking Divine up and down, then shot a smug glance at Karz. "Look, Karz. They are clearly more intelligent than you."

Karz's vein practically popped on his forehead. "Say that again, idiot!"

Oruen and Vortex looked at each other, took a deep, collective breath, and burst into uncontrollable laughter.

"Every single time," Vortex wheezed, shaking his head.

Oruen waved a hand hospitably toward the extra rocks around the fire. "Ignore those two. Sit down, man. You look like you just fought a dragon." He tossed a portion of cooked root toward Divine and Rexy. "Eat. It's safe—we tested it on a small lizard first."

--

As the warmth of the fire settled into their tired bones, the group began exchanging their stories of how they arrived in this nightmare.

Amura groaned, running a hand through his hair. "I was literally in front of my mirror, fixing my collar for a date with my girlfriend. I had reservations, flowers bought—everything. Suddenly, a glowing red rift opened behind my closet and dragged me straight into a bed of toxic ferns. I didn't even get to put my shoes on properly."

Karz crossed his arms, snorting. "At least you weren't in the middle of preparing a thesis defense. I was analyzing high-level philosophical debate structures so I could finally humiliate Amura at our university symposium. We're philosophy majors and academic rivals. Suddenly, reality tore apart, and I fell onto a rock right next to this loudmouth."

"And you two?" Rexy asked, looking at Oruen and Vortex.

Vortex chuckled awkwardly. "Honestly? We were just hanging out at my place, watching anime and eating snacks. The screen started glitching with some 'Kernel Panic' error message, the room folded, and boom—Jurassic era. We met these two fighting over a stick about ten minutes after landing."

Divine listened quietly, taking a small bite of the root before speaking. His voice was low and calm.

"We came from the 6th Affiliate," Divine said simply. "The system broke. Reality shifted. Our leader—Jam—ignited a methane gas pocket to save us from a T-Rex and a pack of Allosaurs. The explosion shattered our team, and we were scattered."

Amura and Karz exchanged a wide-eyed look.

"A... T-Rex?" Amura whispered. "You guys were fighting a T-Rex?"

--

Meanwhile, across the chaotic expanse of the Gondwanan jungle, the rest of the survivors were fighting their own battles against the night.

High up in the canopy of a giant tree fern, PRB, Soamja, and Kyoichi were huddled on a broad branch. Below them, a pair of Metriacanthosaurs were prowling through the dark brush, sniffing the air.

"I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD HAVE CLIMBED HIGHER!" PRB yelled in a harsh whisper, flailing his arms frantically. "KYO, YOUR FOOT IS IN MY FACE!"

"Shut up, PRB!" Kyoichi hissed back, shoving PRB's arm away. "If you scream one more time, I'll kick you down there myself and let the lizards use you as a squeaky toy!"

Soamja sat calmly between them, his notebook open as he scribbled notes using a piece of charred wood. "Statistically speaking, if PRB continues to vibrate at this frequency, the structural integrity of this branch will drop by 40%. Also, Kyoichi, your center of gravity is off."

"NOT NOW, SOAMJA!" both Kyoichi and PRB shouted in unison.

In another part of the basin, deep in the thick fog near the riverbank, Faxxie and Akane were moving cautiously, using a makeshift torch to navigate the mud.

"Keep your eyes on the ground," Akane whispered, holding a sharpened cycad branch out in front. "Jam mentioned scorpions and giant ticks in the Data Entry."

Faxxie shivered, clutching her jacket tight. "Forget the ticks... do you hear that clicking sound?"

Above them in the fog, the pale, winged silhouettes of a dozen Rhamphorhynchus hovered, their needle-like teeth glistening in the faint moonlight as they circled the two girls.

Everywhere, the night was alive with terror.

Separated, lost, and hunted by creatures from forgotten eras, the survivors of the 6th Affiliate were learning the brutal truth of the Jurassic Arc:

The world wasn't just broken—it was actively trying to consume them.
