The following week was unexpectedly quiet.
For the first time in what felt like forever, Yelena found herself alone.
Benjamin and Mia had been taken by one of Darius' relatives for a short visit. The arrangement had been made gently. Everyone around her could see she was exhausted. Between the funeral, the endless condolences, the paperwork, the sleepless nights, and the crushing loneliness that came whenever the house fell silent, she was barely holding herself together.
She had initially resisted the idea since she didn't want to be away from her children.
They were the only things keeping her moving... the only things forcing her to get out of bed every morning... but eventually she agreed to let them go for just a few days...
