Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Corlys's Offer

Chapter 49: Corlys's Offer

POV: Corwyn Darke

The summons to High Tide arrived on a spring morning, carried by a Velaryon captain whose ship had made the journey specifically to deliver it.

Lord Corwyn Darke,

Your presence is requested at High Tide at your earliest convenience. Our partnership has exceeded all expectations, and I wish to discuss appropriate recognition for your exceptional management.

Corlys Velaryon Lord of the Tides

I read the message three times, parsing each word for meaning. "Appropriate recognition" could mean many things—additional trade concessions, political favors, simple gold. But the formal summons, the personal tone, the specific mention of "exceptional management"—all suggested something more significant.

[ LOCATION: HIGH TIDE, DRIFTMARK ]

[ PURPOSE: REWARD DISCUSSION ]

[ RELATIONSHIP STATUS: 80% (EXCELLENT) ]

[ OPPORTUNITY ASSESSMENT: SIGNIFICANT ]

The journey to Driftmark took two days by fast ship. I spent the voyage preparing—reviewing partnership financials, considering possible rewards, and contemplating a request so bold it might destroy everything I'd built.

"Dragon eggs. The Velaryons have them—legacy of their Valyrian heritage, collected over generations. Most are considered dormant, decorative rather than viable. But my research suggests dormancy might be reversible..."

The thought was audacious to the point of madness. A minor Crownlands lord requesting a dragon egg from one of the realm's most powerful houses. The presumption alone could end our partnership.

But opportunities like this came once in a lifetime. Perhaps never.

POV: Lord Corlys Velaryon

High Tide's great hall had hosted countless meetings over Corlys's seven decades, but few visitors had impressed him as consistently as Lord Corwyn Darke.

The young lord entered with the confident bearing that had characterized him since their first meeting—neither arrogant nor servile, simply assured. Four years of partnership had transformed that confidence from potential into proven capability.

"Lord Darke." Corlys rose from his chair, offering his hand. "Thank you for the swift response."

"Your summons seemed important, my lord. I came as quickly as weather permitted."

"Sit. Wine?" At Lord Darke's nod, Corlys poured from a Volantene vintage worth more than most lords' monthly income. "I've been reviewing our partnership accounts. The numbers are... remarkable."

"The harbor has performed well."

"The harbor has performed exceptionally. Thirty percent above projected revenue, expanding trade network, reputation that draws merchants from across the Narrow Sea." Corlys set down his cup, meeting Lord Darke's eyes. "You've made me considerably richer than I expected. That deserves recognition."

"Your investment made everything possible, my lord. I merely managed what you provided."

"False modesty doesn't suit you." Corlys smiled slightly. "You built something extraordinary from the opportunity I offered. That's not management—that's creation. And creation deserves reward."

POV: Corwyn Darke

The moment had arrived.

[ ⚠️ CRITICAL DECISION POINT ]

[ OPTIONS: ]

[ A) GOLD (SAFE - MODERATE GAIN) ]

[ B) TRADE CONCESSIONS (SAFE - LONG-TERM BENEFIT) ]

[ C) POLITICAL FAVOR (MODERATE RISK - SIGNIFICANT GAIN) ]

[ D) DRAGON EGG (HIGH RISK - TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL) ]

[ RECOMMENDATION: ASSESS RELATIONSHIP STRENGTH ]

[ CORLYS SATISFACTION: 80% ]

[ REQUEST ACCEPTANCE PROBABILITY: 35-45% ]

"You've been generous already, my lord. The partnership itself has transformed my house's fortunes."

"Generosity implies gift. Our partnership is business—mutual benefit, carefully calculated." Corlys leaned back in his chair. "This is different. You've exceeded our agreement's terms. That deserves something beyond contractual obligation."

"What did you have in mind?"

"That's the question, isn't it?" Corlys spread his hands. "Gold? You have enough—your treasury rivals houses three times your age. Trade concessions? Useful but pedestrian. Political favor? Perhaps, though you've managed court politics adequately without my intervention."

He paused, studying me with ancient eyes that had seen more of the world than most men could imagine.

"So I ask you, Lord Darke: what do you want? What would a man of your ambition request, if he could request anything within reason?"

The opening was there. The relationship was strong. The risk was enormous.

I made my choice.

"Lord Corlys, I would ask for something that demonstrates both your generosity and my ambition." I met his gaze directly. "A dragon egg from House Velaryon's collection."

POV: Princess Rhaenys Targaryen

The silence following Lord Darke's request stretched for several heartbeats.

Rhaenys had been listening from her position near the window, observing the exchange between her husband and the young lord who'd made their partnership so profitable. She'd expected requests for gold, perhaps land or titles. The standard rewards ambitious lords sought.

A dragon egg was... unexpected.

Corlys's expression had frozen in genuine surprise—rare for a man who'd negotiated with merchants and monarchs across the known world. His eyes evaluated Lord Darke with renewed intensity, reassessing everything he thought he knew.

"A dragon egg." Corlys's voice was carefully neutral. "That's a bold request."

"You invited boldness, my lord. 'Anything within reason,' you said. I'm testing what 'reason' means to House Velaryon."

"Dragon eggs are priceless."

"Dragon eggs that hatch are priceless. Eggs that sit dormant for decades are expensive decorations." Lord Darke's voice remained steady despite the stakes. "Your collection contains several that haven't shown viability in generations. I'm asking for one of those."

"And what makes you think you could succeed where Valyrian blood has failed?"

"I don't know that I can. But I've invested considerable resources in research—scholars studying dragon lore, ancient texts compiled, hatching methods analyzed. If the attempt fails, I've lost nothing but time. If it succeeds..."

"If it succeeds, you've gained power beyond your station." Corlys's voice carried edge. "A minor lord with a dragon. The implications are... significant."

"The implications are alliance." Lord Darke leaned forward. "A dragon bound to House Darke is a dragon bound to House Velaryon through our partnership. Your investment in my harbor would become investment in a dragon rider. When the conflicts everyone knows are coming finally arrive, that alliance could matter considerably."

POV: Corwyn Darke

The argument hung in the air, my fate balancing on Corlys Velaryon's decision.

[ ⏳ NEGOTIATION: CRITICAL PHASE ]

[ CORLYS ASSESSMENT: EVALUATING ]

[ FACTORS: ]

[ + RELATIONSHIP STRENGTH (80%) ]

[ + DEMONSTRATED COMPETENCE ]

[ + LOGICAL ARGUMENT ]

[ - UNPRECEDENTED REQUEST ]

[ - POWER IMPLICATIONS ]

[ - TRADITIONAL CONSTRAINTS ]

[ OUTCOME: UNCERTAIN ]

Corlys rose, moving to a cabinet I hadn't noticed before. He opened it, revealing three pedestals bearing objects that made my breath catch.

Dragon eggs.

Three of them, each unique—one deep crimson with gold veins, one emerald green with darker mottling, one pale blue with silver striations that seemed to shimmer in the light. Even dormant, they radiated something that defied description.

"Fifty-three years since any of these showed sign of life." Corlys lifted the pale blue egg, turning it in his hands. "My grandmother collected them before I was born. I've kept them because they're beautiful and because throwing away dragon eggs seems... wrong."

He turned to face me, the egg cradled against his chest.

"You understand that if you fail, you'll have gained nothing but an expensive reminder of overreach?"

"I understand."

"And if you succeed?" Rhaenys spoke from her position by the window. "What then, Lord Darke? A dragon changes everything. Are you prepared for that?"

"I'm prepared to try, Your Grace. Success or failure is beyond my control—but the attempt is within it."

Corlys and Rhaenys exchanged a glance that carried decades of shared understanding. Then, slowly, Corlys extended the pale blue egg toward me.

"Take it. If you can hatch this, you've earned it. If not..." A slight smile. "You'll have the most expensive paperweight in the Crownlands."

[ 🐉 DRAGON EGG ACQUIRED ]

[ TYPE: DORMANT (PALE BLUE/SILVER) ]

[ VIABILITY: 23% (ESTIMATED) ]

[ STATUS: POSSESSION TRANSFERRED ]

[ DRAGON BONDING PROTOCOL: ACTIVATED ]

[ NOTE: HATCHING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ]

My hands trembled slightly as I accepted the egg. The shell was warm despite the cool chamber—not the warmth of life, exactly, but something that suggested possibility rather than death.

"Thank you, my lord. Your Grace." My voice was steadier than I felt. "I won't forget this generosity."

"See that you don't." Corlys's expression softened slightly. "You've impressed me, Lord Darke. Few men would have the audacity to ask for a dragon egg. Fewer still would make a case compelling enough to receive one."

"I've learned that impossible goals require impossible requests." I cradled the egg carefully. "This is either the beginning of something extraordinary or a very expensive lesson in hubris."

"Most extraordinary things begin as hubris." Rhaenys moved to stand beside her husband. "Good luck, Lord Darke. You'll need it."
