Adam Smith smiled and nodded.
He had never planned to hide it from her, but the situation that day had been too chaotic.
There were people everywhere around the warehouse fire. If he had stayed any longer, reporters or students might have recognized him, and that would have turned the rescue into a full-blown spectacle.
That was why he had quietly slipped away.
Fortunately, his agent had been waiting at the back gate of the university. His face had been smeared with soot and ash from the fire, which unintentionally became the best disguise. No one recognized him, and he managed to leave without causing any disturbance.
"I went to the university that day to apply for a suspension," he said lightly. "I just happened to run into you."
She looked at him for a long moment before asking softly, "You're not angry with me?"
