The bridge groaned beneath his first step, ancient stone cracked and barely wide enough for two men to stand shoulder to shoulder, molten lakes churning far below in slow, violent waves. Azraeth had barely crossed a third of its length when the magma erupted.
Trolls hauled themselves free of the molten river beneath the bridge, claws finding purchase on stone that should have burned any living thing. More crawled through glowing cracks splitting wide across the cavern walls, and still more emerged from abandoned forge entrances carved deep into the volcanic rock, ancient machinery groaning as their massive shoulders forced through openings built for smaller hands. Within moments, both ends of the bridge stood blocked, and shapes converged from every side route the cavern offered.

There was nowhere to retreat to. Azraeth understood that immediately — the bridge itself had become the battlefield, narrow and unforgiving, magma waiting hungrily on either side for the first misstep.
A troll's fist crashed down where he'd stood a heartbeat earlier, and the impact cracked the ancient stone clean through, a section of bridge groaning before it sheared away entirely into the lava below.
Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster
Flame roared around his feet and he leapt the widening gap rather than fight for footing that no longer existed, landing hard on the far side as two more trolls closed from opposite directions. He couldn't dodge both in the space available — so he didn't try. He drove between them instead, a burning elbow catching one across the jaw while he ducked beneath the other's grasping arm entirely, using the narrow space itself as a weapon rather than an obstacle.
A troll above him, perched on a jagged outcrop of the forge structure, hurled a molten boulder down at the bridge. Azraeth threw himself flat as it obliterated a section of railing behind him, then rolled upright directly into a grapple from a troll that had used the chaos to close the distance unseen.
Blue Colored Fire — Fire Protection
The shield flared as crushing arms closed around him, buying just enough resistance for him to drive a burning knee up into the creature's gut and break free before the grip could tighten fully. Another troll's tackle came from his blind side, and he redirected the momentum rather than absorbing it, flame igniting along his shoulder as he pivoted the creature's own charge into the crumbling railing, sending it over the edge into the lava below.
Blue Colored Fire — Fire Dash
Ember trails carried him across another collapsing section as it finally gave way entirely, the whole span crashing down into the molten river in a plume of steam and fire. He landed on a narrower stretch with trolls converging from both directions now, forge machinery groaning and collapsing somewhere behind him as the fight's own violence tore the ancient structure apart.
Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava
He carved unstable ground beneath the closest cluster, watching three stumble at once on footing that no longer held, and used the opening to end two of them before the third recovered. A troll wrenched an entire support beam free and swung it like a club; Azraeth ducked beneath the arc and answered with flame straight into its exposed ribs.
By the time the last dozen regrouped into a final, desperate line, sections of the bridge behind him had collapsed entirely, forcing every remaining troll onto the same narrow stretch of stone he stood upon.
Blue Colored Fire — Sun Flare
A wide wave of celestial heat tore down the bridge's remaining length, scorching the packed line before they could scatter, and Azraeth closed the distance while they reeled, finishing what remained through sheer relentless momentum rather than any single decisive blow.

Floor twenty-seven's hundred and thirty-five trolls found Azraeth calmer than the fight before — no longer reacting to the bridge's collapse but anticipating it, positioning himself so that every falling section worked in his favor rather than against him. He controlled the pace entirely, herding trolls toward weakened stone rather than simply avoiding it himself.
Floor twenty-eight's hundred and forty brought flooding lava as ancient forges finally gave out entirely, molten rock spilling across sections of bridge that Azraeth used rather than feared, letting the rising heat force trolls into narrower approaches he could handle one at a time instead of all at once.
Floor twenty-nine's hundred and forty-five left the bridges in near-total ruin, forcing him to leap between collapsing platforms mid-fight, trading blows in the air as often as on solid stone. A troll caught him mid-leap with a crushing grip; he answered with a point-blank burst of flame that freed him before they both plummeted, landing hard on the next platform already moving into his next strike.

Floor thirty's magma erupted with a violence that dwarfed everything before it, trolls pouring from every molten river and wall-fissure and forge entrance simultaneously.

This time the trolls fought with something closer to coordination than desperation, several of them deliberately smashing bridge supports to cut off his escape routes rather than simply attacking. Azraeth adapted immediately, refusing to be herded, using Fire Dash to cross gaps the moment they opened rather than waiting for solid ground that no longer existed.
Blue Colored Fire — Fire Protection
The shield absorbed a crushing double-handed slam meant to end the fight outright, buying him the half-second needed to answer with a burning counter that staggered his attacker back into two others. Trolls attacked from above and below now, some dropping from ruined forge platforms overhead while others surged up from the lava itself, and the entire cavern seemed determined to collapse around the fight rather than simply contain it.
Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava
He spread unstable ground beneath an entire cluster pressing from one flank, buying precious seconds as they lost their footing entirely, and used the reprieve to drive back the trolls converging from the other direction with pure exhausted momentum. A stray blow finally landed hard enough to crack ribs; without slowing, he pressed a burning palm to the wound.
Blue Colored Fire — Lava Heal
The bone knit shut mid-motion, and he pushed through the fight's final stretch on will alone, exhaustion burning through every limb as he closed the last of the distance between himself and the remaining wall of trolls.
Blue Colored Fire — Fire Dash
Flame roared around his feet one final time, carrying him across the last collapsing gap of stone before the remaining trolls could reset their formation, momentum from the dash flowing straight into a burning knee that drove the closest one back hard into the packed line behind it, buying him the single clear breath of space he needed before finally gathering everything he had left into both palms for what came next.
Blue Colored Fire — Stellar Pull
A compressed sphere tore clean through the packed line in a single unbroken path, and Azraeth ended what little resistance remained with the last reserves of strength he had left, the ancient bridge finally falling silent beneath a sky choked with ash and drifting embers.

Azraeth sank briefly onto a stretch of unbroken stone, breathing slow and deliberate until his heartbeat settled. A shallow wound along his ribs sealed shut beneath one last press of blue flame, and Heat Sense swept the ruined bridge behind him, finding nothing left stirring in the settling ash. He rose again before exhaustion could root any deeper, and descended.
---
The volcanic bridges gave way entirely to something far darker — a vast cavern split by bottomless, glowing chasms, ancient chains hanging in enormous loops between broken bridges, ruined fortresses, and shattered stone platforms suspended over an abyss with no visible bottom. The air here carried none of the forge-heat from above, only a cold, oppressive silence that pressed against him more heavily than any of the fighting had.
Then the chains began to rattle.
Something enormous leapt across a broken span far above him, and more shapes followed, silhouettes dropping from collapsed fortress ruins on every side while others climbed steadily upward from the glowing abyss below, massive hands gripping the ancient chains one link at a time. Heat Sense flared outward, and every single presence it found radiated something heavier, older, and far more dangerous than anything the Upper Mantle's trolls had shown him so far.
Azraeth turned slowly, surrounded on every side by shapes still emerging from the dark, and understood with sudden clarity that whatever waited in this cavern had been waiting far longer than the trolls above ever had.
