The silence in the training ground was absolute, a stark contrast to the explosive violence that had defined the last ten minutes. Smoke drifted lazily over the churned earth, curling around the feet of the Konoha 10. Bruised, exhausted, and wearing expressions of quiet realization, they stood in a ragged semi-circle. The hierarchy they had clung to for years—the belief that clan heritage and academic rankings meant everything—had just been dismantled with clinical efficiency.
"All of you. Gather here."
Tsunade's voice wasn't a shout, but it carried the undeniable weight of the Hokage, cutting right through the lingering tension. Her medical clones, having finished stabilizing the younger ninjas' injuries, dissipated into puffs of white smoke.
Slowly, the teams moved. Out of pure, ingrained habit, they fell into their old formations, seeking the comfort of their units even in defeat.
Naruto stood in the center, flanked by Ino and Temari. Jiraiya paced a step behind him, a self-satisfied grin plastered across his face. The Jonin senseis gravitated toward their respective former students, forming a silent line of observation, while Tsunade stepped forward with Shizune and Tonton at her side.
Crossing her arms, Tsunade swept her sharp gaze across the faces of the young ninja. She wasn't looking at children anymore; she was evaluating the future of her village's military force.
"So," Tsunade began, her voice steady. "Is anyone dissatisfied with the outcome of this battle? Any objections regarding how this evaluation was conducted?"
Silence. It wasn't born of fear, but of profound, humbled reflection. They looked at their battered limbs, the scorched earth, and finally at Naruto. The performance gap was simply too wide; to object would be entirely delusional.
Tsunade nodded once, accepting their unspoken surrender. Her demeanor shifted from the disciplinary Hokage to the final arbiter of ninja law as she turned her attention to Naruto.
"Well," she continued, the air growing noticeably heavier. "Since the record is clear and no one is eager to argue, I will address a matter that has been overdue for far too long. Genin Uzumaki Naruto. Step forward."
Naruto obeyed, his expression carefully neutral.
"Based on your validated mission records from three years ago, your performance during the Chunin Exams, your critical actions against Orochimaru and Kabuto, and validated by your overwhelming combat demonstration this morning," Tsunade stated formally, "I, Tsunade Senju, Fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf, hereby grant you the rank of Jōnin."
For a heartbeat, the world stopped. The announcement hung in the air, completely shifting the reality of everyone present.
Then, the dam broke.
Jiraiya let out a booming laugh, clapping a hand onto Naruto's back hard enough to stagger a normal man. "Told you, you brat! I knew you'd get here!"
Ino and Temari reached him at almost the same time. "Congratulations, Naruto!" Temari's smirk was wide and genuine, while Ino's expression radiated a fierce, sudden pride.
Hinata stepped forward, her movements shy but her smile bright. "Congratulations, Naruto-kun."
Naruto stood there, scratching the back of his head, his cool bravado melting into a bashful, genuine grin. "Uh… thanks? Really. I guess I'm finally out of the Genin pool."
Tsunade allowed herself a rare smirk. "Don't get too comfortable. You can pick up your official flak jacket and mission clearance certifications from my office in a few hours. Keep them properly maintained. If you lose them, you're on kitchen duty for a month."
Choji, typically the first to move past protocol, suddenly raised a hand. "Hey, Naruto… so, where's the celebratory meal? A promotion this big requires way more than a handshake."
Naruto blinked, his grin widening. "Whoa, hold your horses. First of all, you guys still owe me parties for your own promotions. Second, if anyone's throwing a party, Shikamaru should be leading it. He was the first to hit Chunin, right?"
Shikamaru groaned, rubbing the back of his neck as he leaned back against a tree. "Troublesome. Don't drag me into organizing a village-wide celebration just because you finally stopped being a Genin."
Ino crossed her arms, feigning annoyance. "Hey, don't be cheap, Shikamaru. It's a milestone." She tapped a finger against her chin, thinking. "How about this? We all meet at Choji's family restaurant. No one hosts, no one gets stuck with the bill. We split it evenly. Simple."
Choji's eyes lit up. "Now that is a strategy I can get behind."
"That actually makes sense," Neji agreed, his stoic mask back in place but his tone respectful. Tenten nodded beside him.
Shikamaru sighed, conceding defeat. "Fine. Eight o'clock? Don't be late."
The group slowly began to disperse. The heavy tension of the spar evaporated, replaced by mundane chatter about the evening's plans as they retreated into the village. Soon, only the adult Jonin, Naruto, Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Temari remained.
Kakashi stepped forward, his posture relaxed. His visible eye curved into that thin, familiar smile he'd worn for years, though today it carried a different, heavier weight. "Congratulations, Naruto. It's a long time coming."
"Thanks, Kakashi," Naruto replied. His tone was polite, but notably devoid of its usual warmth.
A brief, awkward pause stretched between them.
Kurenai frowned, her instincts as a teacher prodding her to intervene. "Naruto, you should still address him as Kakashi-sensei. Rank doesn't erase who trained you in your formative years."
Naruto glanced at her, then fixed his gaze back on Kakashi. His expression was as cold as the morning dew. "Am I disrespecting you, Jiraiya-sensei?"
Jiraiya snorted, folding his arms. "Not even a little. You earned the right to address me however you please."
"I'm talking about Kakashi," Kurenai pressed, her voice firm.
Naruto exhaled a slow, controlled breath. "To be a sensei, you actually have to teach. You have to care about the growth of the whole unit, not just the survival of one favored student. The only thing Kakashi ever taught me was tree climbing, and he only did that when our team was already falling apart."
The words landed with the impact of a physical strike.
Tsunade's expression darkened, and Shizune stiffened beside her. They had both read Jiraiya's exhaustive, scathing account of Naruto's early development. They knew the reality of a child sent into A-rank combat scenarios without basic defensive fundamentals, the training sessions canceled for Sasuke's benefit, and the blatant neglect that had forced Naruto to figure it out on his own.
Kakashi said nothing. For once, the legendary Copy Ninja, the man of a thousand excuses, had none. There was no lazy smile, no orange book to hide behind, no clever quip to deflect the truth. He stood in absolute silence, the weight of the accusation pulling at his shoulders.
Tsunade broke the silence, her voice low and final. "Enough."
She looked at Naruto. "What happened in the past is a matter of record, but it is not what we are here to adjudicate today. Today was about your growth, not settling old scores." Her gaze softened slightly. "You earned this rank on your own merits, Naruto. That is what matters now."
Naruto nodded, the lingering tension finally easing out of his muscles. He didn't want to dwell on the hurt; he just wanted to move forward.
Jiraiya smirked, nudging his student's arm. "Besides, if we start unpacking every mistake made by the previous leadership in this village, we'll be here until the moon sets, and I for one am starving."
The moment of confrontation passed, shattered by a few quiet chuckles from the adults.
"Eight o'clock, then," Naruto said. He turned his back on the training ground and started down the path toward the village. "I've got a promotion to celebrate, and apparently, I'm paying my share of the bill."
As they walked away—Temari falling into step beside him and Jiraiya trailing lazily behind—the morning sun warmed the back of Naruto's neck. He didn't look over his shoulder at Kakashi. He didn't need to. He wasn't the loud, desperate kid begging for a teacher's validation anymore. Looking up at the Hokage monument looming over the waking village, Naruto smiled, finally feeling like he was exactly where he belonged.
