Chapter 13 - A Warning 2

"That's been the case for a long time now," added Luc, playing the nonchalance card.

But the strangest thing was the nasty look she gave me every time she received a compliment.

All the leaves were lucky enough to find their owners, willingly or by force.

"Here," Luc breathed, placing my sheet of paper down with a satisfied smile on his face.

"I think it's yours," he finished, walking away.

I stare at him out of the corner of my eye and then look away.

I pray over the sheet and turn it over to check my grade, the one that makes people smile so much.

– hum ~, was my only comment

I fold it in four and put it in my pocket with my handkerchief and immerse myself in my reading again but…. Impossible to read peacefully.

That little laugh under my ear kept getting on my nerves.

"That's true, I never lie," commented Alex, extending his hand towards Maëva despite an entire office separating them.

And when Maëva laughed at those little words, those jokes that wouldn't even make a laugher budge, it seemed entertaining, so why do you keep glaring at me?

"Do you have something to say?" I asked him directly.

– HAHAHAHA

She laughed even harder, to the point where tears welled up in her eyes and she hid her face with her note.

– Nothing, nothing, I just find it funny

– "Funny?" I repeat sarcastically

– Quite a character, thinking you're above everyone else, not bad, a smooth talker but not very bright when it comes to texting, Maëva laughed.

Hérèse's eyes immediately twisted to gold, and a glint of malice appeared on her face.

– So what? It's already better than having a spider on the ceiling, don't you agree? Always sarcastic

She swore and bristled in slight anger, her arms crossed under her chest.

– It's still just as unpleasant to talk to you

– the solution is simple, shut up now and forever

Hérèse put a finger to his lips and gestured for him to be quiet, then went back to his book.

Maëva's head looked like it was going to explode because of the enormous anger that overwhelmed her, but at the last moment she sighed and turned away and ignored me.

As long as she doesn't bother me, everything's fine.

– (This kind of forced friendship has always frightened me; it's never genuine)

And finally, the last one returned from his long journey, his face swollen, the corner of his mouth torn, his sky blue shirt perfectly folded in his hands, leaving him with only a simple black t-shirt on his body.

Jack

He rushed past, head down, one eye unable to see, and went straight to his desk which is behind me.

Silence

The room fell silent for a moment, observing itself and the scene; comments were about to start, but were quickly interrupted by a simple glance from Iréné .

The tongues had found their way back into their pockets

So I looked up and met his gaze, Irene's eyes, that same viperous gaze with black irises that reminded me of someone. We stared intensely at each other without explanation until he looked away with a wry smile.

I lowered my head and watched Jack still hiding his head on the desk, then raised my eyes to Alex who gave me the same sly smile.

My face remained impassive and I went back to reading, forgetting everything I had seen.

– I feel a little lighter since "that stretching," commented Alex as if he were boasting to impress our dear "saint".

Luc patted him on the back

– Okay, you're overdoing it a bit

– Leave me alone, I'll do what I want, where's the harm?

He raised his feet and threw them onto his desk, almost placing them on Jack's back.

To sink lower than oneself, you can't say they're just children and that he's joking, I don't care, it's none of my business, I've already managed to escape a possible war today

– (ha, I can't even think straight)

I read even without understanding, happy that today is half a day.

BRINNNN!!

I packed my bag as quickly as possible and went out first, as naturally as I could. I went off to a quiet spot outside, hitting small pebbles on the ground while patiently waiting under the shelter of the school walls.

The rest of my class followed, though not all of them; none of them dared to look at me, except for two little twins who raised a "friendly" hand towards me. I simply ignored their gesture.

I bumped into my car, which was already there, and didn't even give François time to park; I opened the door and threw myself onto the back seat.

"Tough day?" asked François.

"Tranquil," I murmur, my face buried in my bag.

"I see," François replied simply.

The journey was always so short, I didn't move until I reached my destination, just looking at this street bored me.

But once parked, François was the fastest this time; he opened the door for me and retrieved my bag.

"Your teacher will be here in 10 minutes," he automatically informs me.

– Already!, I just got back

He dismissed the two servants who had come to greet us with a simple wave of his hand and followed me himself to my room.

He placed my bag on the desk and retrieved my shirt and watch, which I handed to him to put away.

"I won't be able to stay with you today," said François, bending down to take off my shoes.

– Why!?, surprised and confused

I move away from him and rip off the shoes without even untying the laces.

"I'll do my best to come back as soon as possible, but I can't guarantee anything," François continued, remaining as neutral as ever.

– Then I won't follow his course, that's all

– hérèse-

I interrupt him

– hérèse , nothing, never promise me what you cannot do

– You swore to me you'd tell Mother and that this man would never come back, but he followed me here
