While Xu Changqing secretly organized the items in Changqing Garden with her mind, time seemed to both crawl and fly. Before she knew it, day had broken.
On the green-skinned trains of that era, the dining car served as a dividing line. One car in the sleeper section and another in the hard-seat section were each equipped with a boiler to provide hot water.
While the train was in motion, an attendant would come by every so often carrying a large iron kettle filled with boiling water, going from car to car to refill the passengers' cups.
When the attendant came by with the kettle again, announcing that this would be the final refill, it meant the train was approaching its terminus.
The sleeper car was as safe as they said. By the time the train slowly pulled into the terminal and ground to a halt, not a single passenger had been unlucky enough to lose any of their possessions.
