He couldn't get Shannon Turner's words out of his head. He didn't think she would invent a story about Shay and Jenson Shelby out of thin air.
He began to worry. He worried that he wasn't doing enough, that she would suddenly leave him and go back to Jenson Shelby.
And so, he became exceedingly careful.
A hundred meters away, she started off with a vigorous, fast-paced stride. He wondered if her shoes were chafing her feet.
After half an hour, her pace slowed, and he was forced to drive his car very, very slowly.
Maybe it was because the estate was too big, but she seemed to be losing steam. She stood alone, looking up at the sky and muttering to herself.
'She looks pretty silly like that.'
The corners of his mouth turned up in a doting smile.
"Only halfway there, Ashley Bowen. You have to keep going," Ashley Bowen muttered to herself. Looking at the navigation on her phone, she suddenly picked up her pace as if she'd had a shot of adrenaline.
