I paused at the external threshold leading to the club's main corridor. I automatically raised my hand, my fingers sweeping through the carefully pinned strands of my hair while my eyes scanned my reflection in the small compact mirror fished from my purse.
Even though Robert's brutal parting words still rang viciously in my ears—how he had explicitly shattered my pride, telling me that the moment he would look at me with desire would absolutely never come I simply could not stay away.
He had ordered me to know my place as nothing more than a expendable employee who could be fired without a second thought. Yet, as long as that wretched Julie had vanished into the dark, I convinced myself that my time would come.
