Chapter 204 - The Sky Tears Open (4)

Asta landed heavily on the rubble pile, mere feet away from Rades, the Demon-Slayer Sword resting heavily on his shoulder. His muscles were trembling from the exertion, and blood trickled from a cut on his forehead, but his fierce, unyielding glare never left the necromancer's face.

Rades stumbled backward, genuinely shocked. He had expected the magicless boy to be crushed by Jimmy's raw power. He hadn't anticipated the sheer, terrifying grit and the explosive physical athleticism that Asta possessed.

"You... you're nothing but a freak!" Rades yelled, his hands glowing with a desperate surge of dark mana as he prepared to unleash a massive curse point-blank.

Asta didn't give him the chance. He lunged forward, raising the heavy, black sword high.

"I'm a Magic Knight of the Clover Kingdom!" Asta roared, bringing the blade down with everything he had.

Lencar, observing from the shadows of his distant alleyway, allowed a quiet, deeply respectful smile to touch his lips beneath his illusionary face.

Asta was a variable that the universe simply could not account for. Even without his full canonical arsenal, even heavily disadvantaged by the weight of a single, cumbersome weapon, the boy simply refused to break. He fought with an ugly, desperate, entirely beautiful resilience that shattered the careful calculations of mages who relied solely on their mana pools.

Lencar severed the connection to his sensory web, opening his eyes to the dark alleyway.

The Magic Knights were turning the tide in the streets. Asta was holding his own against the architect of the vanguard. The distraction was failing, which meant the true objective of the Eye of the Midnight Sun was about to unfold.

Lencar pushed himself off the cold brick wall, adjusting the collar of his worn, unassuming cloak.

He walked out of the alleyway, slipping back into the chaotic, smoke-filled streets of the Royal Capital. He moved with purpose, blending seamlessly into the shadows and the panicked crowds. He continued his tour of the besieged city, using the chaos as a cover to quietly observe, assess, and position himself perfectly for the moment the real game began.

The capital was burning, but for the Forged Heretic, the day was just getting started.

The heavy, rusted iron of the Demon-Slayer Sword collided with the thick, bolted armor plating of the monstrous soul corpse known as Jimmy, sending a violent shockwave through the ruined courtyard.

Asta's boots slid backward through the mud, carving deep trenches into the earth. His arms trembled violently under the sheer, crushing kinetic force of the undead behemoth. Without the lighter, more agile Demon-Dweller sword to balance his fighting style, Asta was forced into a grueling battle of attrition. He was relying entirely on raw, unadulterated muscle and bone to parry strikes that could easily shatter a stone watchtower.

From his vantage point in the deep shadows of a nearby alleyway, Lencar watched the boy struggle. The brass camouflage artifact resting against Lencar's chest kept his posture slouched and unassuming, while his composite sensory web monitored the exact flow of the battle.

Asta was reaching his physical limit. The frantic, high-speed leaps and the devastating, sweeping arcs he had utilized earlier were slowing down. The adrenaline was beginning to curdle into heavy, burning lactic acid.

"Is that all you have, you magicless freak?" Rades Spirito cackled from atop a pile of shattered masonry. The necromancer wiped a streak of grime from his stitched face, his eyes wide with malicious glee. "You actually thought you could stand against my masterpiece? Jimmy, crush his legs! I want him crawling in the mud before I turn him into my newest footstool!"

Jimmy let out a guttural, wet roar that sounded like tearing meat. The massive corpse raised its rusted iron cleaver high into the air, the weapon casting a long, deadly shadow over Asta's exhausted frame.

Asta gritted his teeth, his green eyes blazing with stubborn defiance. He tried to raise his heavy black sword to intercept the downward strike, but his shoulders screamed in protest. He was a fraction of a second too slow.

"Water Creation Magic: Sea Dragon's Water Formation!"

A massive, swirling sphere of high-pressure water erupted from the right flank. It tore through the courtyard like a localized tidal wave, slamming directly into the side of the hulking zombie. The sheer, concussive force of the water didn't just knock Jimmy off balance; it picked the massive, iron-plated corpse up off its feet and hurled it thirty yards across the square, crashing it through the remnants of a stone wall.

Immediately following the deluge, a searing, roaring column of bright orange flame shot across the battlefield from the opposite direction.

"Fire Magic: Spiral Flame!"

The spiraling inferno crashed into the cluster of lesser soul corpses that had been slowly flanking Asta, instantly incinerating their rotting flesh and shattering their necrotic tethers. The smell of boiled mud and charred bone filled the air.

Asta blinked, lowering his heavy sword as he gasped for breath. He looked to his left, and then to his right.

Stepping out from the smoke, her silver hair tied back in its signature pigtails, was Noelle Silva. She held her grimoire open, her hands still glowing with residual water magic. Despite the mud splattered across her expensive boots and the undeniable fear trembling in her eyes, she held her chin high, projecting the haughty, uncompromising pride of royalty.

"Honestly, Dasta," Noelle scolded, her voice wavering only slightly. "You charge ahead without thinking and leave yourself completely open. What would you do without royalty here to clean up your messes?"

From the other side of the courtyard, a loud, incredibly boisterous laugh echoed through the ruins.

Leopold Vermillion strode into the light of the fires, his vibrant crimson hair practically matching the flames dancing around his fists. He wore the mantle of the Crimson Lion Kings with absolute pride, his eyes burning with a wild, infectious enthusiasm for battle.

"Well fought, my rival!" Leopold roared, pointing a fiery finger at Asta. "But you cannot hog all the glory for yourself! The Crimson Lions do not sit idly by while the kingdom is under attack. We shall crush these foul creatures together!"

Asta stared at the two of them, a massive, genuine grin breaking across his exhausted, soot-stained face. He hoisted the Demon-Slayer Sword back onto his shoulder, finding a second wind in the presence of his squadmate and his self-proclaimed rival.

"Noelle! Leopold!" Asta cheered, his voice regaining its usual deafening volume. "You guys have great timing! Let's smash this stitched-up weirdo and his ugly pets!"

Up on the rubble, Rades looked utterly apoplectic. His face turned a dangerous shade of red, the stitches around his cheeks pulling taut. "More Magic Knights?! You arrogant, pampered brats! You think a little water and a few sparks can stop my vanguard?!"

Lencar stepped back deeper into the shadows of the alleyway, a quiet, satisfied breath escaping his lips.

He didn't need to intervene here. The variable had found his support network. The canonical trio had formed, and together, their combined elemental versatility and sheer grit would be more than enough to handle a mentally unhinged necromancer who had already lost half his army.
