Chapter 3 - Stephanie meets Stanley

Stanley walked toward her slowly, each step deliberate, his eyes holding something she could not read. Stephanie felt her heart race as he came closer. Without a word, he reached out, guiding her to the bed. His touch was gentle yet firm, as if he already knew she would not pull away.

The room was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and their breathing. Stanley's hands trembled slightly as he brushed against her, as though he were memorizing her presence rather than rushing it. Stephanie closed her eyes, letting herself be carried by the moment. Her thoughts melted into warmth and anticipation, each second stretching as if time itself had slowed.

What followed was private, intense, and wordless. Their connection was silent but profound, something neither of them could fully understand yet both could feel deeplyMorning came in pale light. Stephanie stirred and reached out, only to find the other side of the bed empty and cold. Stanley was gone. Confusion and disappointment tightened in her chest. She sat up slowly, her fingers brushing the cool surface of the bedside table, and then she noticed an envelope. Inside was a short note, written in confident handwriting:

You are an amazing woman. This was the best night of my life.

Before she could fully process it, her phone chimed. A notification lit up the screen. Her breath caught when she saw the amount transferred to her account.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Stephanie stared at the screen in disbelief. Whoever Stanley really was, he had left a mark on her life far deeper than she had expected.

Three months later, Stephanie stood outside the glass building of Glotech Company, clutching her résumé. Life had forced her forward, and she was determined to start again. She had applied for a secretary position, hoping for stability. Nothing more.

The first interview was with Alex, the administrative head. He scanned her CV with a detached expression.

"You do not meet our requirements," he said flatly. "Wait here. The CEO will see you."

Stephanie nodded, her stomach tightening.

Moments later, the office door opened.

Stanley walked in.

Their eyes met, and for a moment, everything else disappeared. Shock flashed across both their faces. Stephanie's heart pounded as recognition hit her all at once. Stanley recovered first, his expression carefully neutral, though his body stiffened.

He cleared his throat. "What position are you applying for?"

She studied him, trying to decide if the night that haunted her thoughts had been real.

"I am applying to be a secretary," she replied quietly. "I have worked as a hotel bar attendant."

Stanley watched her closely, noticing the anxiety she tried to hide behind her calm exterior. Something stirred in him. He felt a protective instinct he did not often recognize.

"You have the job," he said.

Alex looked up in surprise.

"She will resume next week," Stanley added firmly.

Alex nodded, suspicion flickering across his face. He sensed there was more to this decision than qualifications alone.

Despite his reputation as harsh and arrogant, something about Stephanie softened Stanley. Unknown to him, she possessed a sharp business mind, inherited from her late father, a brilliant entrepreneur whose legacy had been lost too soon.

As days passed, Stanley found himself drawn to her not just for her presence but for her intelligence, her quiet strength, and her kindness.

One afternoon, he asked Alex to call her into his office.

Stephanie entered, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. Stanley looked up, suddenly nervous in a way he rarely allowed himself to be.

"Please, sit," he said.

She did.

"Stephanie," he began, forcing himself to be honest, "I care about you. Since the day we met, I have been trying to change, to trust again. I want to be with you."

Her eyes widened slightly. Silence hung between them, heavy and charged.

Finally, she spoke. "Why did you lie about your name when we met?"

Stanley exhaled slowly. "Because I did not trust anyone. My past, my family, my ex—they taught me to hide. But I do not want to anymore."

His eyes held nothing but sincerity.

Stephanie studied him, realizing that sometimes broken people met in the most unexpected ways and changed each other forever.
