Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43

Exposure never announced itself.

It surfaced.

Quietly.

In places people had assumed were invisible.

The first sign wasn't public.

It was procedural.

A routine cross-check flagged a discrepancy that shouldn't have existed small, precise, inconvenient. Not an error. Not a mistake.

A pattern.

I stared at the report longer than necessary.

Not because I didn't understand it.

"And comfort breeds shortcuts."

"Eventually," I said. "Always."

The exposure widened through documentation.

Not a leak.

Not a reveal.

Just alignment.

Data that had never been meant to meet meeting. Timelines overlapping. Assumptions collapsing under their own weight.

No accusation needed.

Reality was sufficient.

"They assumed no one would look twice," Adrian said.

"Yes," I replied. "Because twice is where patterns appear."
