Chapter 64 - Chapter 63: Shadows of the Coming Storm

Chapter 63: Shadows of the Coming Storm

The decision to use the clearing as the final battleground was made the moment Alice's vision locked in.

The newborn army was coming. Dozens of them fresh, feral, and driven by a hunger that made even the Cullens uneasy. Victoria was behind it, pulling strings from the shadows, using Riley Biers as her puppet general. The pack had agreed to the alliance, however reluctantly. Mame had made his position clear: he would fight, but on his own terms.

The campsite was the bait.

Edward and Bella would camp on the mountain peak, their scent drawing the army like moths to flame. Jacob would carry Bella part of the way to mask her human scent with wolf musk. It was a simple, brutal plan.

Mame stood at the edge of the clearing as the group prepared, his long black coat billowing slightly in the evening wind. The dark fabric seemed to drink in the light, the high collar framing his face like a shadow given form. His twin guns rested in their holsters, the dark black finish catching faint glints of dying sunlight. He had spent the last few hours preparing loading magazines with specialized rounds he had "acquired" through the System during his simulation runs. They weren't normal bullets. They were designed to shred vampire flesh and bone, infused with enough Anomaly energy to make them bite deep.

Alice approached him cautiously as he finished loading the last magazine.

"Mame," she said softly, her golden eyes flicking to the guns. "Bullets don't work on vampires. Not really. Not against newborns this strong."

Mame didn't look up. He clicked the magazine into place with a sharp, final sound and holstered the weapon.

"These will," he said simply.

Alice opened her mouth to argue, but Mame was already turning away. He walked toward Sam, who stood in human form watching the preparations.

"Be careful out there," Mame told the Alpha. "These things are fast. Stronger than you expect. Don't let them swarm you."

Sam nodded once, eyes hard. "We know the risks."

Mame gave a short, humorless smile. "Good. I'm not here to babysit."

Chapter 63: The Clearing of Shadows

The decision to use the clearing as the final battleground had been made with cold precision.

Edward and Bella stood at the edge of the meadow as the sun dipped low, casting long shadows across the grass. The plan was simple on paper: Bella's scent would be the bait. Edward would carry her to a remote campsite high in the mountains, far enough from Forks to draw Victoria's army away from innocent lives, but close enough for the Cullens and wolves to respond. Jacob would carry Bella part of the way to mask her human scent with his wolf smell, making the trail confusing for the newborns.

Mame had listened to the entire discussion from the treeline, arms crossed, his long black coat swaying slightly in the breeze. When Edward finished explaining the logistics, Mame simply nodded once.

"Fine," he said, voice flat. "As long as Jake is there, it's fine. I'll stay back and watch from the perimeter. If any leech gets too close to my sister, I'll handle it my way."

Edward's jaw tightened, but he didn't argue. Bella looked between them, the weight of the coming fight pressing on her chest.

The hike to the campsite was grueling, the mountain air growing thinner and colder with every step. Jacob carried Bella on his back for the first leg, his body heat a stark contrast to the chill seeping through the trees. Mame moved silently behind them, a dark shadow slipping between the pines. He didn't speak much, but his presence was a constant, heavy reassurance the kind that came from someone who had already died once in another world and come back changed.

When they reached the high clearing where Edward waited with the tent already set up, Jacob set Bella down gently. His hands lingered on her waist a second longer than necessary, his fingers warm against her jacket.

"You sure about this?" Jacob asked, eyes flicking toward Edward with a mix of concern and resentment.

Bella nodded. "I have to be."

Mame stepped forward, scanning the horizon with those sharp, dark eyes that seemed to miss nothing. "I'll take position further down the ridge. If anything breaks through, I'll be the first line. Don't worry about me. Just focus on staying alive."

He turned and disappeared into the trees without another word, his black coat blending perfectly with the shadows. The sound of his footsteps faded almost immediately, leaving only the wind and the distant call of birds.

Edward watched him go, then turned to Bella. "He's still angry about the turning."

Bella sighed. "He's scared. He thinks I'll be dead to him. To Charlie. To everything that matters."

Edward pulled her close, his cool fingers threading through her hair. "Then we find a way to make him understand. Or we accept that he may never understand… and move forward anyway."

That night, in the small tent high on the mountain, Bella lay wrapped in her sleeping bag while Edward kept watch. The wind howled outside, snow beginning to fall in thick flakes. Jacob had already left to check the perimeter, promising to return before dawn.

Edward sat beside her, cool fingers brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"You're thinking about Mame," he said quietly.

Bella nodded. "He's changed so much since he came back. The things he saw in that other place… it broke something in him. But it also made him stronger. He's convinced turning me is the same as k*lling me. That I'll be dead to him and Charlie."

Edward was silent for a long moment. "He's not wrong about the distance it creates. But he's underestimating what you would become. What we could be together."

Bella reached for his hand. "I don't want to lose my brother. But I can't live my life waiting to die while you stay frozen forever."

Edward pulled her closer, his voice low. "Then we find a way to make him understand. Or we accept that he may never understand… and move forward anyway."

Outside, the wind howled louder. Somewhere in the darkness, Mame was watching.

The next morning, as the group prepared for the final push, Jacob pulled Bella aside near the treeline.

The air was thick with tension. Jacob's expression was raw, eyes burning with everything he had been holding back.

"Bella," he said, voice low and urgent. "You need to hear the truth. Understand all your options. You need to know… that I'm in love with you. And I want you to choose me, instead of him."

Bella stared at him, momentarily speechless. "Jake… I thought you understood. I don't feel that way for you."

Jacob stepped closer. "I don't buy it. You feel something else for me, you just won't admit it. So I'm not giving up. I'm gonna fight for you. Until your heart stops beating."

Bella's chest tightened. "Jake, don't"

He took her by the arms, emotionally charged. "You wouldn't have to change for me, Bella. Or say goodbye to anybody. I can give you more than him. He probably can't even kiss you without hurting you. Feel that? Flesh and blood and warmth."

Suddenly, spontaneously, he kissed her.

Bella pushed against him angrily, but he pulled her tighter. Finally she went limp, dropped her arms, opened her eyes, waiting for him to stop. When he did, she turned away. Then spun back and punched him in the mouth.

There was a horrible crunch on impact. Jacob didn't even flinch. But Bella grabbed her hand in pain.

"Ow! Ow!"

Jacob looked stunned, then concerned. "Bella"

She cradled her hand, tears stinging her eyes. The kiss had stirred something deep inside her a wave of repressed feelings, warmth, safety, the human life she could have had. But as the pain in her hand grounded her, the realization hit like a freight train.

She loved Jacob. Part of her always would. But she loved Edward more. The forever kind of love. The one that transcended life and death.

"I can't," she whispered, voice breaking. "I choose Edward. I'm sorry, Jake."

Jacob's face crumpled, but he nodded once, stepping back. "I had to try."

He turned and walked away, shoulders heavy. Bella watched him go, heart aching, but her choice made.

Final training in the clearing was intense.

Jasper taught advanced tactics while the wolves watched. Mame stood off to the side, methodically preparing his advanced bullets. He had a small kit spread out custom rounds glowing faintly with an unnatural sheen.

Alice approached him, concern on her face. "Mame, bullets don't work on vampires. You know that, right? They heal too fast."

Mame didn't look up. He continued filling his extra magazines with calm, precise movements. "These will."

Alice opened her mouth to argue, but Mame simply clicked another round into place, his expression unchanging. He finished loading all his spare mags, holstered them, and walked away without another word.

Victoria's army arrived like a storm.

The newborns exploded out of the trees into the clearing, a frenzied wave of pale skin, red eyes, and mindless hunger. They moved with terrifying speed, driven by fresh blood and raw power.

The battle erupted instantly.

Mame started from a distance, positioned on a ridge overlooking the chaos. He fired with surgical precision well-placed shots that saved wolves from being overwhelmed. A newborn lunged at Paul; Mame's bullet tore through its knee, dropping it long enough for the wolf to finish the job. Another tried to flank Leah; two rapid shots to the shoulder spun it around, giving her the opening she needed.

The army quickly noticed the new threat.

Several newborns broke off and charged Mame's position. He switched to close-quarters combat, moving with deadly efficiency. Point-blank shots to eyes and ears disoriented them the specialized bullets exploding with enough force to shred delicate tissue and cause temporary chaos in their heightened senses. While they reeled, the wolves pounced, tearing them apart.

Mame played a tactical role, not the lone killer from his simulation. He conserved ammo, created openings, and supported the pack. His black coat whipped around him as he moved, guns barking in controlled bursts.

The fight was savage blurs of motion, snarls, the sound of tearing flesh and shattering bone. Emmett roared with joy as he smashed through enemies. Jasper orchestrated the defense like a conductor. Alice danced through the fray, predicting every move.

Jacob's injury came at the worst moment.

Leah had cornered one last hiding newborn in the woods. She charged only for the newborn to grab her ruff and yank her off her paws. Jacob phased instantly, leaping in to save her. He tackled the newborn, but it got its arms around him and crushed with brutal strength.

Jacob howled in agony.

Bella screamed his name from across the field. The other wolves pounced, forcing the newborn to release him. Jacob crumpled, transforming back to human form, naked and broken, bones shattered on his right side.

Carlisle was there in seconds, Edward steadying Jacob as he writhed in pain.

"The bones on the right half of his body are shattered," Carlisle said urgently. "We need to get him out of here before the Volturi arrive."

Sam and the pack lifted Jacob carefully. Bella dropped to her knees beside him, stroking his face.

"Jake, I'm right here."

Jacob managed a weak smile through the pain. "Bella…"

Riley and Victoria's defeat was swift and brutal.

Edward moved to confront Victoria, but Mame was faster.

He emptied four full magazines into her the advanced bullets ripping through her stone-like skin, exploding with devastating force. Victoria staggered, shrieking as chunks of her body were torn away. Mame advanced, relentless, then set her remains on fire with a flare from his inventory.

Seth took care of Riley, dragging the screaming newborn into the woods and ending him with savage efficiency.

The battlefield fell silent except for the crackling of flames and the heavy breathing of survivors.

Mame stood over Victoria's burning remains, guns still smoking in his hands, black coat tattered but unbroken.

The war was far from over, but this battle was won.

During the chaotic final moments of the battle , one of the newborns a young girl no older than fifteen broke away from the main group and stumbled into the clearing. She was small, terrified, her red eyes wide with confusion rather than bloodlust. Her clothes were torn and dirty, and she moved with the awkward, jerky motions of someone still adjusting to her new immortal body.

The Cullens surrounded her quickly. Emmett had her pinned in seconds, but she didn't fight back. Instead, she dropped to her knees, hands raised in surrender.

"Please… I don't want to fight anymore," she whispered, voice cracking. "Riley lied to us. I just… I just want to live."

Carlisle stepped forward, his expression gentle despite the tension. "We can offer you safe haven if you stop fighting. Surrender now, and we'll protect you from the others."

The girl Bree nodded frantically. "I surrender. Please… don't k*ll me."

The Cullens accepted her surrender, pulling her to the side of the battlefield and keeping her under guard. Jasper watched her carefully, noting the fear in her eyes. She was different from the others less feral, more human in her panic.

The Warning and Departure

As the smoke from burning vampire remains began to rise, Alice suddenly froze, her eyes glazing over in a vision.

"They're coming," she whispered urgently. "The Volturi. Jane and the others. They'll be here in minutes."

Carlisle's face tightened. "The wolves must leave. Immediately. Vampires and werewolves are ancient enemies. If the Volturi find them here, they won't hesitate to k*ll them all. They don't honor truces with our kind."

Sam's massive black wolf form growled in understanding. Jacob translated the pack's reluctant agreement. They couldn't risk it not with Jacob already badly injured.

Mame, who had been standing guard on the ridge, descended quickly. His black coat was stained with ash and blood, guns still holstered at his sides. He scanned the battlefield, eyes narrowing at the mention of the Volturi.

"I want to stay," he said, voice low. "I want to see these Volturi for myself. See what kind of monsters they really are."

But then his gaze shifted toward the direction of Forks, toward home toward Charlie and Renee. His expression hardened.

"…But I can't risk it," he continued. "If they learn about me, about what I am, they might go after my family. Charlie. Renee. I won't give them that opening."

He turned to Sam. "Get Jacob out of here. Keep him safe. I'll cover your retreat if needed."

The wolves didn't waste time. Several of them shifted back to human form just long enough to help lift the injured Jacob onto a makeshift stretcher made from broken branches and coats. Leah stayed close to her brother, her face pale with worry. Sam gave one final look toward the Cullens a mix of gratitude and deep-seated distrust before the pack melted back into the trees, carrying Jacob with them.

Mame lingered for one last second, watching the wolves disappear. Then he too vanished into the forest, a silent shadow slipping away to protect his own.

Only after the wolves were long gone did the Volturi arrive.

Volturi Arrival

The air grew colder, heavier. A thick purple-black smoke rose from the burning remains as the Cullens gathered in the center of the field, converging around Bella.

From out of the mist and smoke emerged four figures moving with effortless, graceful menace.

Jane led them, her misleadingly angelic face calm and innocent. Behind her came the hulking Felix, elegant Demetri, and cherubic Alec. All wore dark coats with hoods, their presence radiating ancient power.

Jane assessed the scene, taking in the Cullens and the burning pyres. Her eyes lingered on Bella.

"It appears you've done our work for us," Jane said, her voice sweet and chilling. "Impressive. I've never seen a coven escape an assault of this magnitude intact."

Carlisle responded with careful calm. "We were lucky."

Jane smiled thinly. "I doubt that."

She noticed the surrendered newborn, Bree, crouching fearfully by the fire.

"You missed one," Jane said.

Carlisle stepped forward. "We offered her asylum in exchange for her surrender."

Jane's eyes flashed. "That wasn't yours to offer."

As Jane moved toward Bree, Esme shot Carlisle a concerned look. Carlisle subtly shook his head.

Bree trembled as Jane focused her power. An invisible searing current shot through the girl's body. Bree screamed in agony, collapsing to the ground.

"Who created you?" Jane asked sweetly.

Bree gasped through the pain. "I don't know… Riley wouldn't tell us. He said our thoughts weren't safe."

Jane zapped her again. Edward intervened. "Her name was Victoria. Perhaps you knew her."

Bree's pain ceased momentarily. Jane turned to Edward with an innocent smile that somehow unnerved everyone.

The other three Volturi positioned themselves behind Jane.

Bella planted herself firmly at Edward's side. The air was tense.

Jane studied Bella for a long moment. "Caius will be interested to know that she's still human."

Bella lifted her chin. "The date is set."

Jane looked slightly taken aback by Bella's confidence, but she turned back to Felix. "Take care of that, Felix. I'd like to go home."

Felix moved with enormous strength, easily tearing Bree limb from limb. Her screams were short but horrifying, the metallic screeching sound echoing across the clearing.

Jane smiled. "Thank you, Felix. Until next time."

The Volturi departed as gracefully as they had arrived, leaving only silence and the thick plume of smoke rising into the sky.

Bella's Decision

In the quiet aftermath, as the Cullens began cleaning up the battlefield, Bella stood with Edward in the meadow where it had all begun.

The ring felt heavy on her finger now a promise and a choice.

August thirteenth.

She looked up at Edward, eyes clear despite the horror she had just witnessed.

"I've chosen my life," she said firmly. "I want to start living it. With you. After we're married."

Edward searched her face. "You're sure? Even after everything the battle, the Volturi, your brother's warnings?"

Bella nodded. "This wasn't a choice between you and Jacob. It was between who I should be and who I am. I've never felt stronger, more real, more myself than in your world. It's where I belong."

She wrapped her arms around him. "I want to tie myself to you in every way humanly possible. Starting with a wedding."

Edward held her tightly, lifting her off her feet in a rare moment of pure joy.

The war wasn't over. Mame's threats still hung in the air. The Volturi would be watching.

But in that moment, Bella had made her choice.

She was ready for forever.

Here are the new parts continuing Chapter 63 (final scenes):

Jacob's Heartbreak

Jacob learned the truth two days after the battle.

He was still recovering at his house, bones slowly knitting together under Carlisle's care. Bella came to visit, the engagement ring now openly on her finger.

Jacob's eyes locked onto it immediately. His face went pale, then twisted with raw pain.

"You're marrying him," he said, voice hoarse. It wasn't a question.

Bella nodded, tears already forming. "Yes, Jake. I'm sorry. I love you — I always will. But I love Edward more. This is my choice."

Jacob looked away, jaw clenched so tight it trembled. For a long moment he said nothing. Then he let out a shaky breath.

"I knew it was coming. I just… hoped I was wrong." He forced a weak, broken smile. "I'll always be waiting, Bella. Until your heart stops beating. Maybe even after that."

He turned his head away, unable to look at her any longer. "Just go. Please."

Bella left with a heavy heart, the sound of Jacob's quiet, devastated breathing following her out the door.

Mame's Ultimatum

Mame was waiting for Bella when she returned home.

He stood in the living room, black coat still bearing traces of ash from the battlefield. His expression was colder than she had ever seen.

"I heard," he said without preamble. "You're marrying him."

Bella nodded, bracing herself.

Mame stepped closer. "I don't care if you marry him. Play house all you want. But if they turn you if you become one of them they better run faster and farther than they've ever run in their immortal lives. Because I will kill them all. Every last one. And if you become one of them… I'll kill you too. Or you can kill me when you turn. Your choice."

Bella's breath caught. "Mame… you wouldn't really"

"I would," he said, voice flat and absolute. "I already lost you once in my mind when I thought you were dead. I won't watch you throw away everything that makes you human. Not for them."

Edith Cullen had followed Bella home, standing quietly near the doorway. She stepped forward now, trying to reason with him.

"Mame, you won't really kill your own sister," Edith said softly, her voice gentle but firm. "Deep down you know that. You love her too much"

Mame moved faster than anyone expected.

He drew one gun in a blur and fired a single shot.

The bullet grazed Edith's temple, close enough to draw a thin line of blood and send her staggering back in shock. The Cullens who had been watching from a distance froze in stunned silence.

Mame lowered the gun, eyes burning. "You'll be the second one to die after Edward. You're really starting to annoy me now."

Edith touched the graze on her temple, eyes wide with surprise and a flicker of something deeper pain, recognition, the pull of blood singer connection she felt toward him. The rest of the Cullens tensed, but no one moved to attack.

Mame holstered the gun and walked out without another word, the door closing quietly behind him.

That same evening, Edward took Bella back to the meadow.

The grass was still trampled from the recent battle, but the wildflowers were already beginning to push through again. Edward dropped to one knee, pulling out the small black box.

"Isabella Swan," he said, voice thick with emotion, "I promise to love you every moment forever. Would you do me the extraordinary honor of marrying me?"

He slipped his mother's ring onto her finger the long oval face with glittering stones catching the fading light.

Bella's hands shook as she accepted. The ring felt both beautiful and heavy after everything that had happened Mame's threat still ringing in her ears.

"Yes," she whispered. "Yes, I will."

Edward rose and embraced her, lifting her off her feet. They were both still shaken by Mame's words, the graze on Edith's temple fresh in their minds. But the mate bond between them whispered reassurance he wouldn't really do it. It was just a scare tactic. He loved her too much to follow through.

At least… that's what they told themselves.

Days later, Bella and Edward returned to the same meadow.

The grass was greener now, wildflowers in full bloom. Bella lay with her head on Edward's chest, listening to the silence where his heartbeat should have been.

"August thirteenth," she said softly. "Alice says she can get the wedding together by then."

Edward stroked her hair. "There's no rush."

"I've chosen my life," Bella replied, sitting up to look at him. "I want to start living it. With you. I'm ready for the turning."

Edward searched her eyes. "Even after Mame's threat? After everything?"

Bella nodded. "This is who I am now. I've faced death, loss, pain — all in your world. But I've never felt stronger. More real. This is where I belong."

She wrapped her arms around him. "I want to tie myself to you in every way possible. Starting with the wedding… and then forever."

Edward held her tightly, the ring sparkling on her finger.

The future was uncertain. Mame's shadow loomed large. The Volturi were watching.

But in that golden meadow, under the soft Washington light, Bella had never been more sure.

She was ready.
