Chapter 195 - Chapter 195: The 100-Year Quest

"A 100-year quest... a job that hasn't been completed for a hundred years?!"

Lucy was stunned. What kind of quest could be so difficult that it couldn't be finished for a hundred years? She had originally thought she was already a strong guild wizard, but now it seemed she was still far from it.

In the town:

"It's Gildarts!!"

"Gildarts is back!!"

[Magnolia Town is switching to Gildarts Shift! All citizens, please proceed to designated positions immediately!! I repeat!]

Lucy was a bit confused. "What is Gildarts Shift?"

Mira said, "Take a look outside and you'll know."

Lucy looked out curiously. "No way!! The city is cracking open!!"

The main street of Magnolia began to sink, forming a straight path leading directly to the Fairy Tail guild.

Mira explained, "Because Gildarts uses magic that smashes whatever he touches, if he accidentally walks through town while spacing out, he'll destroy people's houses."

"They remodeled the whole city just for that?!"

"How amazing, Carla!"

"Yeah, amazingly stupid!"

"He's here—!!"

Everyone looked toward the entrance, expressions of longing appearing on their faces.

Kael also looked forward; he was looking forward to meeting Gildarts as well. In the anime, Gildarts always gave off a super reliable feeling. He was also the only wizard in the anime who used the super-high-level destruction magic—Crush—as his base magic.

Soon, Gildarts walked into the Fairy Tail guild. He had orange hair swept back, some stubble on his chin, and was wearing a somewhat tattered dark green cloak, looking slightly disheveled.

"Gildarts!! Duel me right now, aaaaaah!!"

Natsu immediately issued a challenge with excitement upon seeing him.

Elfman was startled. "He's challenging him right away?!"

"Welcome back."

Gildarts was a bit confused at this moment. He looked at Mira and asked, "Little girl, I remember there should be a guild called Fairy Tail around here."

"This is it, and I'm Mirajane."

"Mira?"

Gildarts looked at her closely. "You've changed so much! By the way, the guild looks brand new!"

The Mira he remembered was a completely different person from the current Mira.

"Gildarts!"

Seeing that Gildarts was actually ignoring him, Natsu had no choice but to take the initiative.

"Ohh!! Is that Natsu!! It's been a long time."

Natsu was still the same, not much had changed, and he recognized him at a glance.

"I said duel me!"

Natsu swung his fist at Gildarts.

Boom!

Gildarts raised his hand and swatted Natsu into the ceiling. "Let's talk about it next time."

"Just... as expected... super strong!"

"The old guy hasn't changed a bit."

"A man among men!!"

Gildarts scanned the room and couldn't help but sigh. "Ah, there are some new faces. This place really has changed quite a bit!"

After being gone for three years, it was only now that he returned that he realized how much time had passed; the guild had completely changed.

"Gildarts."

Makarov's voice rang out.

"Ohh!! Master!! Long time no see!!"

Makarov asked with a serious expression, "How was the work?"

"Gahahahaha!"

Hearing Makarov's question, Gildarts scratched his head awkwardly and laughed. Makarov sighed. He had watched Gildarts grow up and naturally knew what that look meant.

"No good, I couldn't complete it."

"What?!"

"No way?!"

"That Gildarts..."

"Actually failed a quest?!"

The guild members couldn't believe their ears. That was Gildarts, the strongest wizard in Fairy Tail. How hard must a quest be for even him to fail?

"I see. Even you couldn't do it?"

"I'm sorry, I've brought shame to the guild."

"Not at all. It's enough that you came back safely. As far as I know, you're the first person to ever return from that quest."

A 100-year quest meant the job had existed for a hundred years. Over those hundred years, countless powerful wizards had challenged it, and all of them had failed and died. The specific 100-year quest Gildarts had taken hadn't seen a single person return alive until now.

"I want to rest, so I came back. Phew, I'm exhausted, totally exhausted. Natsu, come to my house later. I have a gift for you! Well, I'm going now."

After saying that, Gildarts turned around and walked away, completely failing to notice the wall right in front of him.

Crrrash!

The wall shattered, and Gildarts walked straight out.

Warren complained, "Gildarts, use the front door!"

Lucy was deeply shocked and curious at this moment. What kind of difficult quest could a 100-year quest be if even the strongest wizard in the guild couldn't finish it?

Erza looked at Lucy and said, "You're still a bit too green for a 100-year quest."

"Do I look that excited?!"

Lucy was startled; she didn't want to go on a quest like that at all.

"A 100-year quest, huh?"

Kael felt a bit tempted in his heart.

"System, how many lottery pulls will I be rewarded with for completing a 100-year quest?"

[Completing a 100-year quest will reward you with 100 pulls!]

"100 pulls!"

Kael's eyes immediately lit up. A hundred pulls sounded far too tempting.

"Master..."

"No!"

Makarov immediately vetoed before Kael could even speak. "You are the next Master. If something happens to you, who will inherit the guild?"

Makarov knew this kid Kael all too well. He had dared to take S-class missions as soon as he joined and lived for S-class missions on a daily basis. Countless powerful wizards had fallen to this 100-year quest, and even Gildarts couldn't finish it. He wasn't against Kael challenging a 100-year quest eventually, but Kael was still too young and had much more room to grow. Just like Gildarts, who only challenged it in his forties.

"The Master is right! How high must the difficulty be for a quest that even Gildarts failed?"

Mira warned Kael with her hands on her hips. She also knew how bold Kael was. She wouldn't stop him from other missions, but a 100-year quest was different.

Seeing Mira say this, Kael had no choice but to give up. "Uh... okay!"

He felt that he might have been getting a bit overconfident lately. The difficulty of a 100-year quest was not comparable to other missions, and his strength might not even be greater than Gildarts'. Taking on this quest would indeed be a bit too risky.

He also thought of the 100-year Quest arc from the anime; that really wasn't a job for humans. With his current strength, if he were to challenge the tasks from that arc, he wouldn't say he was doomed to die, but there was almost zero chance of success. He should wait until his magic power was higher before trying
