Chapter 23 - A Heart Set on Death — The Challenge

"Jin, it's you."

Seeing Jin suddenly appear, Shisui showed little surprise.

He simply smiled and greeted him.

After knowing each other for several years, he was already used to Itachi's younger brother appearing and disappearing like a ghost.

Or rather—

Suddenly appearing.

Who knew? This kid might pop out from behind him at any moment and start talking out of nowhere.

At the beginning, Shisui really had been startled a few times.

Especially once, when he was in the middle of taking a dump, this guy suddenly jumped out from behind—

Scared him so badly he nearly clamped it off on the spot.

"Brother Shisui, what are you doing here?"

"Hm? I…"

Shisui froze for a moment, feeling a bit puzzled.

Wasn't this place something he had discovered?

Why did it suddenly feel like he was the one who shouldn't be here?

Of course, that strange feeling vanished in an instant.

One tall and one short, the two figures stood chatting atop the river's surface.

Caw—caw—

Above them, crows descended, skimming rapidly along the river.

As time passed, Jin slowly noticed that the traits on Shisui's body seemed to be changing.

A blazing mass of gold shone dazzlingly bright.

Below it, one particular trait was constantly billowing black mist.

[Conversation Target: Uchiha Shisui.]

[Analyzing copyable traits.]

[Kotoamatsukami (Gold), Phantom Body Flicker (Purple), Mangekyō Sharingan (Purple), Kotoamatsukami (Gold), Heart Set on Death (Black)…]

Compared to more than two years ago, the traits on Shisui's body were practically flawless.

The only thing missing was that shiny green Susanoo.

But—

When Jin saw that special black trait, he sighed softly.

"A man destined to die… so Shisui has already sensed something?"

In the original story, this sunny, cheerful big boy actually had a chance to live.

And not a small one.

Whether fleeing back to the clan or defecting from the village, survival was possible.

Yet in the end, he only handed over his last eye to his friend.

Using his life to help Itachi awaken the Mangekyō.

Which was cause, and which was effect—Jin couldn't tell.

Thinking of this, he couldn't help but recall his own black trait.

He tugged at the corner of his mouth and examined it.

[Name: Uchiha Arata.]

[Chakra: 1,852,511.]

[Traits: Seven-Year Itch (Black), Body of Golden Light (Rainbow), Weak Presence (Rainbow), Flying Thunder God Technique (Gold) lv6, Nine-Tails Jinchūriki (Gold), Mangekyō Sharingan (Purple)…]

Six years had passed, and both his spirit and physical strength had grown tremendously.

Especially over the past two years—now that he was older, his body had developed even faster.

And this was only in his normal state. If he activated the Cloud-Style Body Technique and Nine-Tails Jinchūriki mode, his stamina would multiply several times over!

Purely relying on taijutsu, he could already rival an ordinary jōnin!

But most importantly—

Despite all these years, Seven-Year Itch hadn't changed one bit.

The black aura around that trait was so dense it was downright frightening.

He'd tried feeding other traits into it before, but nothing changed.

Like a stagnant pool of dead water.

Maybe… he'd only see something happen on the night of the clan's annihilation next year?

Jin thought so, nodding slightly.

Then, after hesitating for a moment, he looked meaningfully at the big boy beside him, who was grinning foolishly.

"Brother Shisui, what do you think of the village?"

"The village? It's great! There's no war right now, and everyone's living happily."

"Then what do you think about… Danzō as a person?"

"Lord Danzō?" Hearing the name, Shisui paused before answering seriously.

"He's a true hero—selfless, rooted in the shadows, protecting Konoha!"

Jin: ...

Totally screwed. No saving him.

Among the Uchiha, this Shisui really didn't grow a single scheming bone.

[Conversation duration reached ten minutes. Attempting to copy trait.]

[Copy failed.]

Failed again.

If talking didn't work, then—

Let's fight.

Jin slowly raised his head, looking at the big boy before him. Sunlight filtered through the wisps of hair, stinging slightly.

"Brother Shisui."

"Hm?"

"Right now—I've got quite a bit of fire in me."

"Huh? Have you been staying up late again, Jin?" Shisui blinked.

"No. I want to—fight you."

Jin rolled his neck. His bones crackled loudly.

The laziness and slackness in his eyes vanished completely.

Like a lion awakening from slumber, his entire body radiated a blinding presence.

"Haha, you little guy, why so sudden—"

Shisui laughed, even reaching out as if to rub Jin's cheek.

But the moment his hand extended, he suddenly saw Jin's eyes turn crimson.

Shisui's expression shifted slightly.

This was—

The eyes are open?

When did Jin awaken the Sharingan?

He was confused.

In his memory, Jin was always lying around lazily.

Every day, once he finished talking, he didn't want to move again.

And Uchiha usually awakened their eyes on the battlefield—after witnessing the death of comrades and suffering intense emotional shock.

But—

Jin had never even been on a battlefield!

And since birth, nothing particularly tragic had happened to him.

So—

How did he awaken it?

Especially when…

Those crimson Sharingan eyes made even him feel a prickling sensation on his back.

So this guy was serious.

Shisui took a deep breath, his expression turning solemn as he nodded.

"Alright."

Whoosh!

He suddenly drew the katana from his back and retreated several steps.

Chakra surged out from within him in waves.

Gurgle… gurgle…

Under his feet, the river's surface boiled like hot oil, bubbles bursting nonstop.

"Then let me see just how far little Jin has grown!"

As his words fell, he slashed forward.

Crash!

A blade of energy surged with water, charging straight ahead!

Splash—crash!

Water erupted violently, instantly disrupting vision.

Behind the white mist of splashing water, Shisui formed hand seals and warned:

"Jin, be careful—next I'll use Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique, attacking from three directions at the same—"

Mid-sentence, his voice abruptly stopped.

Drip.

A bead of sweat silently appeared on his forehead.

His back erupted in dense goosebumps.

At the edge of his vision, the cold gleam of a shuriken hovered near his kidney, emitting a chilling light.

Above Jin's head, the words Flying Thunder God Technique flashed briefly.

Pinching the tail of the shuriken, Jin shook his head.

"Brother Shisui, has no one ever told you…"

"When you're fighting, don't talk so much."

"Too much startup—it's real easy to get cut down."

They were already fighting, and this big boy was still reminding him to be careful.

If he ran into someone truly fast, wouldn't he be killed in a single strike?

And only now did Jin truly understand why the Yellow Flash, Namikaze Minato, had made all the major ninja villages abandon missions on sight.

Even legends like the Three Ninja of Konoha had never forced the villages to issue an order like:

"If encountered, abandon the mission immediately."

"You… when did you—?"

Shisui frowned, a trace of seriousness appearing in his bright eyes for the first time.

He was genuinely shocked.

Jin had clearly been in front of him just a moment ago—how had he suddenly moved behind him?

Body Flicker?

But when had he formed seals?

Splash.

The next second, Shisui's body dissolved directly into a pool of water, flowing into the river.

Crash—crash—crash!

Moments later, more than ten meters away, his form reassembled.

Twelve clones in total!

Each holding a katana—

All facing Jin!

"Body Flicker? Now this is getting interesting… but—"

Veins bulged at the corner of Jin's eyes. Beneath the crimson glow, the Byakugan snapped open instantly.

"Sharingan plus Byakugan—Brother Shisui, your Body Flicker…"

"…is done for, isn't it?"
