"James, I-"
"Shhh," he whispers, sliding his warm hand beneath my shirt until his fingers find the curve of my spine. "It's okay."
My breath comes out shaky as I press my face against his solid chest. We stand in the cold air outside the police station, waiting for Hugo to emerge from whatever chaos he's handling inside. Though I suspect he'll vanish into thin air the moment he steps outside, disappearing for weeks or months without a word. Mack prowls through a frost-covered flowerbed nearby, stalking some poor mouse with pure feline joy. Sometimes I think he prefers being a cat to his usual intimidating spirit form.
"It's not okay," I continue, my voice muffled against his shirt. "I put that soundproof spell on Phoenix's office because my anger was so intense I didn't want anyone hearing what I might do. If I hadn't cast that spell, no one would have been able to arrest you. You wouldn't have been shot or burned or-"
