Nora's POV
Witch hunters.
The arrow hits the ground with a sharp clatter, and I scan the yard, searching for where the shot originated.
Movement catches my eye through the perfectly trimmed hedges of a house across the street.
Without thinking, I bolt down the porch steps, not slowing until I reach the gate separating Lena's property from the sidewalk. I stop abruptly, spinning back toward the house. The front door remains wide open, Zed still sprawled on the ground, his eyes filled with terror as he watches me.
I can't abandon them defenseless.
But I refuse to let the hunter escape.
Breathing hard, I raise my hands, my gaze sweeping across the street. An engine roars to life several houses down.
"Malum quo communius eo receperint hic," I whisper, and pale blue light erupts, forming a protective barrier around the house. Then I sprint forward, leaving the gate swinging behind me.
