Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: Counterattack Against Kirigakure (IV)

As everyone knows, many ninjutsu are released from the mouth, so in theory, when a ninja performs ninjutsu, they do not shout out the name of the technique in an overdramatic manner.

Makoto naturally did not either, even if his mouth happened to be free.

So everyone knew that this was an Earth-Style Wall, but they did not know that it was senjutsu.

This led everyone to develop another question: I understand the ninjutsu, but why was the Wall so enormous?

Makoto replied, So what? Just tell me—is it a Wall or not!

The people of Konoha still did not know who had performed the ninjutsu, but the companions beside Makoto could see it clearly.

Hayate stared in shock at the two gigantic walls that blocked the rushing water and muttered, "Father, this… this isn't right, is it? Is Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall really that big?"

Kumomi said, "Huh? Ah! That's right, this is Earth-Style Wall."

Yūgao also felt that he was inexperienced and ignorant. "Makoto-nii is that amazing. The technique he uses is naturally amazing too. Is there a problem with that?"

Gekkō Hayate: "…"

Makoto glanced at the little girl: when there was something going on, it was Makoto-nii; normally, it was just Makoto. You really know how to do this.

Commander Uchiha Sōsuke saw that the crisis had been resolved and was overjoyed. Without bothering to look for the one who deserved the credit, he shouted to everyone, "Charge with me—wipe out these damn Kiri ninjas!"

"Oh~~"

Everyone let out a shout, then froze—if you want us to charge, how are we supposed to charge? Climb over such a high wall? That's not impossible.

Seeing this, Makoto used Body Flicker and arrived at the front line. With a simple set of hand seals, the enormous Earth-Style Wall cracked open from the corner, then toppled toward the Kiri ninja position on the slope.

The Kiri ninjas: Is it dark? Then they reacted and frantically retreated.

Rumble!

Like a mountain collapsing, the sound shook the four directions. The earth trembled, and dust filled the sky.

Makoto drew the short blade from his back. Slash, slash, slash—he swept three horizontal cuts, scattering all of the white natural energy he had absorbed into his body.

Senjutsu: Wind Release: Shadowless Sword!

Three huge, nearly invisible wind blades scraped across the slope like razors. Not only did they shave the forest on the slope flat, the strong wind also blew the dust and mist completely away.

Visibility immediately cleared.

Where the wind blades passed, the quick-reacting Kiri ninjas leaped away at once. The slow-reacting ones were lucky enough to see their own butts—some butts were still hanging from trees.

Makoto raised his blade and pointed forward. "Charge!"

After saying that, he was the first to rush forward.

The morale of Konoha's people surged, and they howled as they charged toward the Kirigakure stronghold on the slope, unstoppable.

As the opponents, the Kiri ninjas had already been so rattled by this inhuman ninjutsu that they completely lost the will to fight and frantically retreated toward the cliff.

Fight? How are we supposed to fight? Fight with our heads?

The defeat collapsed like a landslide.

...

When Fugaku arrived here with the remaining forces, the battle was already over. The Seventh Assault Team was in the middle of cleaning up the battlefield.

Cliffs were not a dead end for ninjas. There were too few Konoha ninjas blocking the lower area, so in the end, some of the Kiri ninjas still managed to escape.

The commander in charge did not order a pursuit. It was just as well to let them carry the news back and shake the enemy's morale a bit.

So it wasn't that the Uchiha were stupid—rather, their personalities were just a bit too straightforward and tsundere.

After learning what had happened, Fugaku immediately expressed his praise for Makoto, though the look in his eyes carried a trace of grievance.

At this moment, the clan head had bitterness he could not put into words.

What was going on with the shinobi world? Did it have a grudge against the Uchiha?

Back then, they had finally produced an Uchiha Madara, bearing an air of invincibility—only for the shinobi world to simultaneously spawn a natural airhead named Senju Hashirama, who hard-countered Madara at every turn.

When he set his mind on reviving the glory of the Uchiha, a Namikaze Minato appeared on the battlefield, flashing around everywhere. Although he was a few years older than the other man, they were still considered of the same generation.

Now the clan had produced a genius like Uchiha Shisui. Fine—along came another peerless powerhouse of the same age like Higashino Makoto.

Was there just no way left for the Uchiha to survive? Weren't they supposed to be the strongest clan in the shinobi world?

This shinobi world was truly terrible.

At the same time, there were two other groups nearby paying close attention to this battle.

Orochimaru stood atop the branches, an inscrutable smile on his face, his tongue repeatedly licking across his lips. He was naturally aware of this operation—and it was he who had approved it.

As the overall commander of the entire eastern front, even though his mind was no longer on this place, he still had to come take a look. Otherwise, if things went wrong, it would not look good for him.

He, Orochimaru, cared about appearances.

But it seemed he had seen something interesting. That child called Higashino Makoto—there was something very wrong about him.

On a more distant mountain ridge, two other odd figures were also observing the battle here.

One was a long-haired man wearing a mask that revealed only a single eye. The other was a yin–yang-faced figure wrapped within a gigantic aloe-like plant.

These were naturally Uchiha Obito and Black Zetsu.

Black Zetsu asked in his uniquely hoarse voice, "Quite an impressive child. Obito, do you know him?"

"Call me Madara!" Obito corrected the other's form of address. Then he recalled the scene in the hospital where he had been verbally shut down by Higashino Makoto, yet spoke dismissively, "He's called Higashino Makoto—just a little brat."

"But he seems very strong. The power he used back then also felt rather unfamiliar."

"So what? Without the bloodline of the Sage of Six Paths, a ninja has limits in the end. He's nothing more than another Kakashi."

"Are you sure? I think it would be better to keep an eye on him in the future. Oh, right—he seems to have quite good sensory abilities. We should leave, to avoid being discovered."

Obito obediently activated Kamui Space, preparing to leave. But before departing, he still had to save face: "Hmph. Mere grains of sand—not worth even a fraction of what Hashirama and I possess."

Black Zetsu: "…"

Damn it, are you really getting addicted to pretending?

...

When Uchiha Fugaku arrived at the Kiri ninja command camp with the main force, he met only minimal resistance. The Kiri ninjas left here were far too weak, and the Konoha ninjas quickly wiped out the remaining Kiri ninjas. This victory came… not very satisfying.

Fugaku-sama could not help feeling a bit empty: I haven't even used any strength yet, and you've already fallen.jpg

At this time, Makoto ran over from behind the command post. "Fugaku-sama, as expected, most of the Kiri ninjas have fled by ship. Should we give the order to pursue?"

"Makoto, you and Shisui are friends. You don't need to call me 'sama.' If possible, just call me 'ojisan'." Fugaku's expression was incomparably gentle, and then he said, "No need to pursue. Fighting the Kiri ninjas at sea is not wise."

"Yes, Fugaku-ojisan." Although he felt there was some suspicion of being taken advantage of, it was just a form of address—Makoto was not that thin-skinned.

"That's how it should be. No need to be so distant. My son is already four years old this year. A young talent like you is exactly the example he should learn from. After we return to the village, Shisui can introduce you so you can get to know each other."

Higashino Makoto: "…"

A truly filial son. Getting to know him is fine, but what if he stabs me?

Huh? No, that's not right. He can't beat me. Even if he awakens the Mangekyō later, he probably still won't be able to beat me.

Then what the hell am I afraid of!

At this time, Uchiha Sōsuke said, "Clan head, on the way here, it seems like we didn't run into many Kirigakure clan ninjas, especially bloodline clans. What's the situation with the other units?"

Uchiha Fugaku, as the overall commander of this campaign, naturally understood the situation. "It does seem to be the case. Jōnin Suzaku, what do you think?"

Nara Suzaku thought for a moment and said, "Based on the intelligence we have, Kirigakure's internal strife has been very serious for a long time. The civilian ninjas and the bloodline clans are in sharp opposition. It's probably because of this that they pushed the civilian ninjas to the front to block us, while they themselves ran off ahead of time."

Makoto recalled what he had sensed earlier. Among the Kiri ninjas who left, there seemed to be quite a few with rather distinctive chakra—especially one big fat guy carrying a strange weapon.

That was probably Suikazan Fuguki. That guy must have heard that Konoha had another godlike figure arrive and ran faster than anyone else, practically like he had PTSD.

Fugaku began to feel contempt for Kirigakure. "Hmph, such a short-sighted village. Well, though, it's good for our Konoha. I hope their infighting becomes more severe—better yet, that they wipe out all those powerful bloodline clans."

Suzaku glanced at Fugaku, not quite sure where to begin criticizing him.

Brother, when you say that, did you forget that your own family is the most badass bloodline clan in the shinobi world?

At this moment, the Konoha ninjas had already finished clearing the battlefield and were preparing to withdraw.

Suddenly, an enormous purple giant snake was summoned, crushing Kirigakure's command post into a complete mess. Then, amid a stream of cursing, the summoning was terminated, and it vanished on the spot.

Uchiha Fugaku: "…"

No—Orochimaru, what the hell do you mean by this? Under my command, we defeated the Kiri ninjas and secured victory on the eastern front for Konoha. And you pop out at the end just to show your face—what are you trying to do?

Fugaku-sama once again felt that something was deliberately targeting the Uchiha clan.

This shinobi world was truly terrible.
