"Liora, at this rate you'll never save up 5000 points to call in a tank.
Listen to me, switch to Engineer. Stop trying to duel people. With your aim, landing one kill out of 30 shots would be like winning the lottery!"
A comment dripping with mockery scrolled across her vision. I Will Carry You, who was in the middle of yet another post-death funk, suddenly froze.
Engineer?
Right! Why hadn't she thought of that! She couldn't kill enemies, she was always half a beat too slow to save people or got herself killed trying, but fixing things and placing sandbags, this kind of "construction work," couldn't possibly require that much skill, right?
Like a ray of light in endless darkness, I Will Carry You's eyes lit up instantly.
When she entered the class selection screen again, she didn't hesitate to abandon the medic laser pistol that had brought her nothing but humiliation and chose the icon with a wrench and gears: Engineer.
[Engineer]:
· Equipped with basic laser carbine (weak damage, for self-defense only).
· Tool: Engineering wrench (repairs vehicles, stationary weapons, defensive structures).
· Ability: Can deploy one fixed heavy bolter turret or laser emplacement per life.
· Point rewards: Repair structures/vehicles +50, build sandbags/barbed wire +30, deploy heavy weapons +100, heavy weapon kills/assists +bonus points.
Respawning at the relatively safe second-line position, I Will Carry You looked at the wrench in her hand and the heavy bolter that needed to be set up, feeling an unprecedented sense of familiarity.
This was what someone with "terrible hands" like her should be playing!
She no longer charged toward the most intense firefights like a headless fly. I
nstead, she began carefully observing the battlefield. Which cover was heavily damaged? Which intersection lacked crossfire? Where were the enemy's likely attack routes?
And so, on the artillery-pounded third defensive line in the southern district, a peculiar sight emerged.
An Engineer with the ID "I Will Carry You" scurried about like a busy prairie dog, hunched over, weaving between various pieces of cover and ruins.
She completely ignored the laser beams whistling overhead and the deafening explosions in the distance.
Her eyes were only on the fortifications that needed repair and the corners where weapons could be placed.
"CLANG CLANG CLANG!" She swung her wrench, frantically working on a sandbag wall that had been blown to pieces by artillery.
With each motion, the damaged sandbags were visibly repaired and reinforced.
[Repair defensive structure +50 points]
"CLANG CLANG CLANG!" She ran to a machine gun bunker that was half-collapsed, straightened the twisted metal supports, and fixed the ammo feed system.
[Repair stationary weapon +50 points]
"This spot needs a firing position!"
Noticing a weakly defended flank intersection, she immediately crouched down and expertly deployed the heavy bolter. Its dark muzzle pointed toward the direction the enemy might attack from.
[Deploy heavy bolter +100 points]
She even instinctively learned to use sandbags and barbed wire to build simple mazes and obstacles, slowing down the Imperial soldiers' advance.
While these actions didn't grant many points individually, they were safe, stable, and sustainable!
Occasionally, Imperial recruits would break through the fire net and try to approach this "rear engineer," but they'd usually be taken out by nearby defending AI soldiers or responding players before they got close.
All I Will Carry You had to do was avoid getting hit by stray fire amid the chaos while frantically "doing construction."
Her points began climbing at an unprecedented, steady pace!
+50!
+30!
+100!
[Your heavy bolter assisted in killing Imperial Guard recruit +25 points]
+50!
The individual gains weren't huge, but the frequency was high!
In just a few minutes, her points broke 1000 and were steadily climbing.
This feeling of watching resources grow consistently was far more fulfilling than running around the battlefield with a medic gun, terrified and living moment to moment!
"Guys! Did you see that? This is what game sense looks like!"
I Will Carry You finally held her head high, showing off to the stream from behind relatively safe cover.
"Fighting and killing is so crude! Infrastructure, that's the foundation of human civilization! This is what I call... strategic vision!"
The chat's tone immediately shifted:
"Holy crap? Did Liora just crack the meta?"
"She evolved from a walking point package to Logistics Director, is that it?"
"You know what, those heavy weapon positions she set up really did relieve pressure on the front."
"'About My Infrastructure Projects in the Warhammer Universe'"
"Imperial soldier: Why the hell do the rebels have more fortifications the longer we fight?!"
What surprised her even more was that her "play it safe and develop" strategy actually had a positive impact on the battle.
The structures she repaired and built provided more reliable cover for frontline soldiers.
The heavy weapons she deployed created a crossfire network that effectively curbed the Imperial soldiers' charges.
Especially that heavy bolter set up at the flank intersection, its bursts had successfully repelled multiple Imperial squad attempts at flanking maneuvers.
User114514 even stopped by her position during a reload, rare for him, and said simply, "Engineer, nice work. That rooftop platform to the east, you could set up a laser cannon there. Good sight lines."
"Roger that! Boss!" I Will Carry You was thrilled and immediately scurried off in the direction he'd indicated.
For the first time in this brutal game, she'd found her own place and value.
Turns out, you didn't necessarily have to have godlike aim and be a killing machine to earn respect and points.
With a wrench, you could contribute just as much to victory, and even... farm points more efficiently!
Watching the numbers in her point counter steadily rise, I Will Carry You could already see a glorious future where she'd summon war machines and crush the Imperial defensive lines.
