Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 : Adrian Blackwood

Seraphina sat in the back of the black cab, the city lights passing like blurred streaks. Her fingers were still cold, not from the evening wind, but from the moment she'd locked eyes with Adrian Blackwood earlier. She wasn't supposed to meet him yet—not in this timeline.

Not at eighteen.

In her past life, she only crossed paths with him when she was twenty-five, already a rising designer, already tangled in a losing engagement with Aiden Voss. Adrian had been a distant shadow then-powerful, unreachable, watching her once at an elite fashion expo but never stepping into her life.

But now...He looked at her. He spoke to her. He noticed her.

That wasn't part of the old story. Seraphina pressed a palm against her chest, forcing herself to breathe normally.

"Adrian Blackwood... why now?" she murmured to herself.

The cab rolled to a stop in front of Hale Mansion, and she stepped out. The night was quiet, heavy, watching her like an old companion she no longer trusted.

Inside the mansion, everything was the same as her memories-lavish, quiet, beautiful, yet lonely. Her father was at the board meeting that would last until dawn. Mother was in Paris, as always. The staff greeted her with polite smiles she once overlooked.

"Miss Seraphina, dinner is ready."

"Thank you," she said softly-another change from her past life, where she barely acknowledged the servants due to stress and exhaustion.

She ate quietly, her mind replaying Adrian's expression. That calm. That icy gentleness that wasn't gentle at all. That dangerous aura lurking beneath a perfectly carved exterior. She knew who he was—the hidden king of the underworld. The man who ran the largest private intelligence network. The man whose name could silence entire boardrooms.

And she'd met him today. Today, when she had nothing. No position. No power. No leverage.

A shiver ran down her spine. This is too early... I need to lie low. I'm not ready to meet someone like him.

She finished dinner, returned to her room, and sat at her desk. Papers were scattered-school assignments, fashion sketches she hadn't seen in years, dreams she had forgotten.

Her hand hesitated before touching the paper. Sketching again felt like touching the future.

Her future. The one she died for. The one she would win this time.

Slowly, she picked up a pencil. Lines flowed. Shapes formed. A silhouette of a gown emerged-dark, royal, powerful. A design she once created at twenty-two.

"Not this time..." she whispered.

She ripped the paper into two. She would not repeat the past. She would not recreate what she once did. This life was new this path would be different.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in," she said.

A maid stepped inside, bowing. "Miss, a call for you. From... Mr. Aiden Voss."

Seraphina's fingers tightened. Aiden her ex-fiancé, the man who killed her. Everything inside her went still-the breath, the heartbeat, the warmth.

"What did you tell him?" Seraphina asked, voice controlled.

"That you're available to take the call."

"...I see. Transfer it."

The maid nodded and left. Seconds later her phone rang.

Seraphina stared at the screen displaying his name. Aiden Voss. A name that once meant everything. A name that now made her feel nothing but cold.

She slid her thumb across the screen.

"Hello?" Her tone was soft-exactly as he remembered. Exactly as she wanted him to remember.

"Seraphina! I heard about what happened this evening. Are you okay? Someone said you almost fell on the road."

Her jaw tightened. So people already talked so Aiden already knew. Just as he always did the Voss family had eyes everywhere.

"I'm fine," she replied calmly.

"That's good. I was worried." His voice carried the same gentle warmth, the same fake concern he had used to manipulate her for years.

She no longer felt anything."That's unnecessary," she said.

His silence stretched then, a soft laugh."You're acting different today."

"I'm just tired."

"Hm... I guess that makes sense." Aiden paused, his voice dropping into that soft, coaxing tone."Should I visit you tomorrow? I can drive you to school."

"No," she said immediately.

Aiden blinked on the other side of the call. "...No?"

"I prefer going alone."

More silence—the first crack.

"...Seraphina, did I do something wrong?"

Yes. You destroyed me. She didn't say it. Instead, she breathed slowly, controlling her tone.

"No, Aiden. But I've changed. I want some space."

Aiden's voice hardened for just a moment-subtle but clear. He wasn't happy. He wasn't used to being refused but he covered it quickly.

"Of course... but don't distance yourself too much, okay?" a pause."We're important to each other."

Seraphina ended the call without replying. Her hand trembled slightly-not with fear, but with anger she swallowed for an entire lifetime.

"Important?" she whispered."You made me a fool."

She set the phone aside and lay on her bed. Her heart was tired, but her mind was awake-too awake.

And that was when something unexpected happened.

Her phone buzzed again. A new message. Unknown number.

Unknown: "You shouldn't walk without watching your surroundings, little dove."

Seraphina froze her breath caught. Little... dove? Who would...? Before she could process, another message came.

Unknown: "Next time, you might fall into the wrong hands."

Her pulse quickened. She typed back slowly.

Seraphina: "Who is this?"

Three dots appeared. Typing. Then-

Unknown: "You already know."

Her grip tightened around the phone. A chill ran through her spine. Impossible. No...It couldn't be.

Seraphina sat up, staring at the phone as the third message arrived-

Unknown: "Sleep early. Tomorrow will be interesting."

Her heartbeat hammered.

There was only one man who spoke like that. Only one man with that cold confidence.

Only one whose gaze could feel like a warning and a promise at the same time.

Adrian Blackwood.

But how? How did he get her number? How did he know where she was? Why was he watching her at all?

She swallowed hard. This wasn't her past life. This was a new timeline and this was new danger. And Adrian Blackwood wasn't supposed to enter her story yet.

Seraphina lowered her phone slowly.

"...What do you want from me?" she whispered into the empty room.

She received no answer-but she felt it.

A shift in fate. A ripple in the timeline, a powerful shadow stepping into her path far earlier than destiny intended. And somehow, she knew-

Adrian Blackwood didn't approach people for no reason. If he contacted her...It meant he had already marked her.

Not as prey. But as something else entirely.

Seraphina barely slept that night.

Her curtains fluttered gently in the midnight breeze, but all she could think about was the message he sent before disappearing.

"Tomorrow, we meet properly."

Adrian Blackwood.

Even thinking his name made a cold shiver run through her spine—not fear, but a strange, suffocating awareness. In her past life, she only saw him from afar. The legendary "Silent Monarch." Feared by elites. Respected by the underworld. Completely untouchable.

He never approached anyone unnecessarily. If he wanted something, he took it but if he lost interest, the world shifted to accommodate him.

And he was interested in her and that alone was dangerous.

Seraphina sat up, hugging her knees, staring at the starless night sky through the balcony window.

In this new life, she wanted control. She wanted to stay away from monsters in suits and devils with soft smiles. But destiny had already changed.

She clenched her jaw."I need to stay focused," she whispered.

Adrian Blackwood wasn't her priority. Her company—her future fashion empire—was.

Her revenge was.

She would not repeat the mistakes of her past life. Not with business or with love. Not with Aiden and definitely not with Adrian.

Morning — Hale Mansion

Seraphina dressed more formally than usual—with a careful, polished touch. Hair tied neatly, makeup light but defined, posture elegant.

She needed to look strong. Unreachable. Not someone easy to pull into a dangerous man's orbit.

Downstairs, the staff froze the moment they saw her. Her aura was different today. Sharp. Controlled. Mature.

The head maid bowed."Good morning, Miss Seraphina."

"Good morning," she replied softly.

She sat for breakfast, unfolding her napkin. The moment she lifted her fork—Her phone buzzed.

Her fingers went numb. One single message:

Unknown: "Look outside."

She swallowed, stood up quietly, and walked toward the nearest tall window.

Her heartbeat thudded.

Parked in front of the mansion's gates was a black Rolls Royce—polished, intimidating, expensive in a way that screamed power rather than luxury.

The staff began whispering. None dared approach the vehicle.

Seraphina didn't need to ask whose car it was. Only one man would announce his presence without stepping inside.

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown: "Come out."

Seraphina's throat tightened. "What does he want now?" she whispered under her breath but she knew she had no choice. Ignoring Adrian would be a mistake worse than confronting him.

She walked toward the main doors, every step heavy with dread.

Outside the Gates—The morning air was cool, still. The black car reflected the golden sunrise. A tall man stood beside it.

He wasn't looking at her. He didn't need to his presence alone made every staff member stay rooted and silent.

Seraphina stepped closer.

Adrian Blackwood turned.

Her breath caught painfully.

He was devastating up close—sharp jawline, sculpted features, dark hair slightly tousled, and eyes colder than midnight oceans. Eyes that pinned her in place with a single glance.

"Good morning, Seraphina," he said quietly.

His voice was calm. Too calm. She bowed her head slightly without meaning to.

"Mr. Blackwood."

A small smirk touched his lips."So you do recognize me."

Her heart skipped. He was teasing her. She straightened, forcing her voice steady.

"It would be hard not to recognize someone like you."

"Hm." his smirk widened by a fraction—barely there, but dangerous."Smart girl."

Seraphina lifted her chin."Why are you here?"

He studied her silently, his gaze lingering on her hair, her eyes, her trembling hands—nothing escaped him. Finally, he spoke.

"You left last night without answering my question."

"Question?" she whispered.

He stepped closer—slow, deliberate, predatory.

"Why you were almost hurt."

Her breath tangled. He meant when she nearly fell after Aiden startled her.

"That wasn't important," she said.

"It was to me."

Her heart raced. Why? Why would a man like him care?

He stopped just in front of her, close enough that she could feel his warmth despite the cold morning air.

"You don't watch your surroundings," he murmured."Someone could take advantage of that."

Her pulse quickened."And… you care because?"

He lowered his head slightly, his breath brushing her ear.

"Because you interest me."

Seraphina's entire body locked. Interest—he used that word again. She stepped back.

"That's a mistake," she said quietly.

He lifted a brow."A mistake?"

"Yes." She forced her voice firm. "I'm not someone you should be interested in."

Adrian's eyes darkened, not with anger—but with curiosity sharpened to a blade.

"And yet," he said softly, "I am."

Her breath shook."I don't want trouble," she whispered.

"Trouble?" he gave a low, amused laugh."I haven't even started yet."

Her stomach twisted.

He opened the back door of the Rolls Royce.

"Get in."

Her heart skipped a beat."I—I have school."

"Your driver will take you after." he tilted his head."Come."

Seraphina froze. Refusing him would be seen as disrespect. But getting inside his car… Getting close to him…It felt like stepping into the lion's den willingly.

She shook her head slightly."Mr. Blackwood, I really—"

His eyes hardened, not with anger but with something colder.

"Seraphina."

Her name in his voice was a command. A quiet one...but unyielding. She inhaled shakily.

He noticed. A small, almost imperceptible softness entered his gaze.

"You're trembling," he said."You don't need to be afraid."

She clenched her fists."I'm not afraid."

He chuckled."You should be."

Silence.

Then, he moved closer, brushing a loose strand of hair from her cheek with one gloved hand.

Seraphina's breath hitched.

Adrian's touch was barely there—gentle, slow—but it sent ice racing through her veins.

"Get in the car," he whispered."I won't ask again."

Her world spun. This man…This dangerous, unreadable man…She had wanted to avoid him but fate had wrapped his shadow around her path.

Seraphina took a step forward—hesitant, fearful, yet unable to walk away. Adrian watched her with eyes that saw too much. When she finally slid into the backseat, he closed the door behind her.

A triumphant gleam flickered in his eyes. Not dominance or arrogance. But something far more unsettling—Possession.

He walked around the car, sat beside her, and signaled the driver to move. The moment the door closed, Seraphina realized one terrifying truth—She had stepped into a world she wasn't prepared for.

And Adrian Blackwood wasn't a man who let go once he took interest.

He was a man who consumed.
