Time passed as everyone from the Yuki Clan prepared to depart. Since Daigo knew the exact location of all the tunnels, he used his crystal to create bridges and headed toward them. This would be the safest and quietest way to relocate an entire clan.
However, before doing that, they had to cross the sea separating the Land of Tea from the Land of Wind. Fortunately, Daigo already had a safe route mapped out. It took them two days to guide the entire clan to the tunnel entrance, which would shield them from the treacherous weather and the desert sandstorms.
Daigo turned toward Pakura, who was closely observing him.
"Pakura, I need you to go with them. Guide them through the tunnel back to Sunagakure. Once you arrive, speak directly with Rasa; tell him to temporarily house them in the new residential zone we finished building last month. It's empty, it's secure, and they can begin to rebuild themselves there without anyone bothering them."
Pakura frowned immediately, crossing her arms over her chest. Her intense eyes made it crystal clear that the idea of leaving Daigo alone in the Land of Water did not please her at all.
"Are you joking, Dai? I have no intention of leaving you alone in enemy territory. I know you're strong, but Kirigakure is in the middle of a bloody civil war. My duty is to stand by your side," she replied firmly.
Daigo flashed a subtle, warm smile, stepping a bit closer so the members of the Yuki Clan wouldn't overhear them.
"I won't be alone; I have the five Shadows with me. Besides, you are the only one I trust implicitly to ensure these 120 people make it to Suna alive and without a hitch. You are the Hero of sunagakure, Pakura-chan. Your presence with them is the best guarantee. Please."
Pakura let out a resigned sigh, knowing Daigo's logic was flawless and that the safety of the malnourished Yuki Clan children was the priority.
"Fine," she conceded, giving him an intense look. "But you better come back in one piece, or I will personally make sure to give you a beating that not even your crystal can stop."
With that final warning, Pakura turned around and guided the long line of refugees into the crystal tunnel. Once everyone was safely inside, Daigo sealed the tunnel using an earth jutsu, leaving himself and the five Shadows of the Desert ready for their next move.
"Alright, Kisame," Daigo spoke, adjusting his Kazekage hat. "The Yuki Clan is safe. Now we move toward our next objective: the Terumī Clan."
The journey to the Terumī Clan's domain was entirely different. As they advanced into the main islands of the Land of Water, the freezing snow vanished, replaced by a dense, humid, and suffocating mist.
The environment was heavy with military tension; this sector was the absolute epicenter of the main resistance against the tyrannical government of the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura. Patrols of Mist ninjas loyal to Kiri and defensive outposts were a constant presence, but the Suna squad moved past them like ghosts.
Thanks to Kisame's precise knowledge of military maps, supply routes, and the resistance's blind spots, the group managed to bypass every single defensive line. The infiltration was so perfect and surgical that, within a couple of hours, Daigo and his Shadows successfully evaded the security of the Terumī headquarters, stepping right into the very heart of the base without tripping a single alarm.
Even Daigo felt internally surprised. They were in the main office of the clan leader—the strategic command center of the rebellion—and nobody had noticed a thing. Showing not a single shred of haste, the Kazekage calmly sat down on a wide wooden sofa located in the center of the room, crossed his legs, and patiently waited for the owners of the house to show up.
Meanwhile, out in the exterior hallway, Mei Terumī was walking at a hurried pace toward the office. At 17 years old, the young woman already possessed an imposing presence and a maturity forged on the battlefield. Walking alongside her was her father, the current leader of the Terumī Clan, a man of rugged countenance, and right behind them advanced Ao, the experienced clan advisor, maintaining his posture as the two of them discussed matters.
Both were heatedly debating the resistance's next tactical movements and the medical supplies that were running dangerously low. However, the exact instant Mei's father placed his hand on the doorknob and pushed open the door to his own office, the senses of all three Mist ninjas flared to their absolute limit by pure survival instinct. The air inside the room felt incredibly heavy, dense, and weighed down by a monumental chakra.
Stepping completely inside, the scene they witnessed froze them in their tracks, locking their movements in a second of pure shock.
In the center of the room, Daigo sat calmly on the sofa, observing them with a terrifying serenity from beneath his Kazekage hat. Just behind him, the massive, monstrous figure of Kisame Hoshigaki loomed like a gargoyle, one hand resting on the hilt of Samehada, ready to devour chakra. To Daigo's right, Baki kept his Byakugan fully activated, the veins at his temples bulging heavily, with the slender blade Nuibari resting casually over his shoulder.
But the most lethal part was the positioning of the other three. In an absolute blink of speed, Genta had appeared right behind Mei Terumī, placing the twin electrified blades of the Kiba swords brushing delicately against the skin of her neck. On the other side, Yura held the massive Kubikiribōchō with milimetric precision, the edge of the decapitating blade resting against the neck of Mei's father. And finally, Kaito aimed the massive, heavy Kabutowari directly at Ao's head, blocking any attempt he might make to form hand seals or activate a technique.
The silence in the office was so absolute that the dripping of humidity against the windows could be heard. The Terumī family's shock was total; the Kazekage and five ninjas wielding the legendary swords of the Mist had taken control of their most secure base without making a single sound.
Yet, proving the cold blood of the Mist ninjas, none of the three made a scene or shouted for guards. They knew perfectly well that if they attempted to raise the alarm, their heads would roll before the first sound could escape their mouths.
With slow, calculated movements, Mei and her father walked softly toward the main table, sitting across from Daigo while keeping their eyes locked onto him. Daigo gave a subtle hand signal, and immediately, Genta, Yura, and Kaito withdrew their respective swords from their targets' necks, stepping back to align themselves in a perfect formation behind their leader.
Daigo adjusted his Kazekage cloak and spoke in a deep, calm, and perfectly modulated voice.
"I apologize for giving you this kind of welcome in your own office. I assure you I haven't come with hostile intentions or to shed blood. I have only come to talk."
Mei's father, swallowing hard but maintaining the dignity expected of a clan leader, decided to play along with Daigo's diplomatic game, leaning his elbows on the table.
"Well... I certainly didn't expect to find the Kazekage of Sunagakure himself sitting on my sofa, let alone escorted by the thieves who stripped our village of its sacred swords. Tell me, Kazekage-sama, what is the Sand seeking in the internal affairs of the Mist?"
Daigo locked his gaze directly onto the man.
"I have come to make you a formal proposal. I am fully aware of the current situation in the Land of Water. Because of this, I offer the Terumī Clan the chance to abandon this fruitless war and formally join Sunagakure. I guarantee you your own territory, resources, and the protection of my village."
Mei's father opened his eyes in surprise at the sheer audacity of the proposal, but before he could answer, Mei Terumī stepped forward. The 17-year-old slammed the table softly, her gaze radiating a competitive and proud fire as she stared at the young Kage.
"That is never going to happen, Kazekage-sama," Mei responded with a firm and resolute voice.
Daigo shifted his eyes toward her. For a brief second, the young man couldn't help but notice that Mei was an absolute beauty; her features, her long auburn hair, and her confident posture made her stand out tremendously. However, in the back of Daigo's mind, a mental image of a chibi version of Pakura, floating with crossed arms and a look of hellish fury enveloped in flames of Shakuton, appeared as a divine warning. Daigo mentally cleared his throat, pushing away any distractions and keeping his face completely expressionless to focus on the main reason he had come.
"You should consider the reality of the numbers, Mei Terumī," Daigo spoke coldly. "The way things stand on your front lines, the resistance has an extremely high probability of defeat. I am offering to save your lineage instead of wasting your lives in a civil war that is bleeding you dry day after day."
Mei Terumī shook her head, a smile laced with patriotic pride gracing her lips.
"We are not going to run like cowards, and I certainly won't lower myself to betray my own land, my homeland, the way that scum standing behind you did," she sentenced, throwing a venomous glare at Kisame.
Kisame, far from being offended by Mei's words, let out a cynical smirk, displaying his rows of sharp teeth as he adjusted Samehada on his shoulder.
"Heh... You speak with a lot of arrogance, Mei," Kisame commented mockingly. "The village of the Mist has been rotten and infected from its very foundations, long before you were born. I don't regret for a single second leaving that dumpster to join Sunagakure under Daigo's command. Here, at least, there is a real purpose, not just senseless slaughter."
Mei simply averted her gaze in disdain, holding firm in her refusal to abandon the Land of Water. Mei's father, observing his daughter's unyielding resolve and assessing Ao's expression, let out a long, heavy sigh. He turned toward Daigo with a look of respect.
"Kazekage-sama... Would you allow us to speak in private for a moment? Just my daughter, my advisor Ao, and myself, to finalize our definitive stance."
Daigo nodded slowly, maintaining his imperturbable posture.
"You have the space. I will be waiting outside."
Daigo and the five Shadows silently exited the office, closing the door and leaving the three resistance leaders alone. Inside the room, Mei immediately turned to her father.
"Father, under no circumstances can we accept going to Sunagakure. It would be admitting that Kirigakure is dead; it would mean abandoning all the civilian families who trust us to overthrow Yagura."
Ao, crossing his arms, intervened analytically.
"The Kazekage's offer is incredibly good from a logistical and military standpoint, I cannot deny that. It would give us an instant lifeline. However... I stand with Mei on this. I cannot turn my back on our people and leave them to die under the Mizukage's tyranny just to save our own skins."
Mei's father felt a spark of hope seeing the determination of his clan's new generation. He nodded his head, especially when Mei stepped toward the map table with renewed energy.
"It is still possible to fix Kirigakure, Father, as long as we keep winning key battles in the peripheral islands," Mei explained passionately. "Instead of joining Suna and abandoning our home, we can propose something else to Daigo: a military alliance. If Sunagakure actively helps us with their troops and their power to free this country from Yagura's rule, we will sign an eternal peace treaty once the resistance takes control of the village."
With the counter-plan completely structured and agreed upon, the office doors opened once more. Daigo and the Shadows returned to their original positions, awaiting the clan's resolution. Mei's father took the floor, explaining the proposal for a military alliance to the Kazekage in detail, along with the long-term mutual benefit of having a free Kirigakure as Suna's eternal ally.
Hearing the counter-proposal, Daigo meditated in silence for a few moments. For a second, the thought of helping the resistance crossed his mind; certainly, having the favor and gratitude of the Mist's future administration could be a massive commercial and military advantage for Sunagakure down the line.
However, Daigo was no ordinary ninja; his strategic mind analyzed the deepest layers of the situation. Remembering perfectly what was happening behind the scenes with the Mizukage and knowing who was truly pulling Yagura's strings—the fake Madara Uchiha, Obito Uchiha—Daigo knew that accepting this alliance would be a fatal mistake at this point in history. Especially when Suna had gained so much, and the idea of everything going to hell over a madman did not sit well with him.
The Kazekage shook his head firmly, immediately crushing Mei's expectations.
"My answer is no. Sunagakure will gain nothing by intervening directly in this conflict right now. In fact, if I were to accept that alliance, it would be far worse for the resistance itself."
Mei furrowed her brow, visibly angered by the refusal.
"Worse for us? What are you talking about? With your strength on our side, we would crush Yagura's army in weeks," she claimed in frustration.
Daigo locked his eyes onto her, delivering a geopolitical truth so cold and harsh that it disarmed any argument.
"Even though we are the same age, you are far too young and idealistic, Mei," Daigo sentenced in an implacable voice. "If I fight here with the full power of Sunagakure and win this war for you, this village would no longer be the free Kirigakure you dream of; it would technically become an annexed territory or a protectorate under the boot of Sunagakure. Do you think the other nations would just sit by and watch? The moment the Sand places a permanent military foothold in the ocean, Konoha, Iwa, and Kumo will lock their eyes on me, triggering a World War that I have no intention of starting over someone else's conflict."
Daigo rose from the sofa with an imposing elegance, his white cloak billowing slightly as the Shadows positioned themselves at his sides, ready to leave.
"And even if I wanted to help out of pure sympathy, I see no real strategic advantage for my village at this moment in history. Sunagakure does not take unnecessary risks."
Walking toward the office exit, Daigo paused for a second before crossing the threshold, glancing sideways at the Terumī Clan leader and his daughter.
"I wish you good luck in your rebellion. But this war does not benefit Sunagakure... at least for now. Perhaps in the distant future, circumstances will change and we can speak of alliances. Until then, guard your lives."
Without adding another single word, Daigo and the five Shadows of the Desert vanished from the room in an absolute blink of speed, leaving the Terumī office engulfed in a sepulchral silence.
Mei, who hadn't said anything further, suddenly slammed the table, shattering it completely under her strength.
"Weak... Everyone is a coward. Nobody wants to help unless there is something in it for them," Mei said as tears of anguish welled up in her eyes.
Her father stepped closer to lift her up, but she pushed him away, standing up on her own.
"I think I understand his words. We aren't strong enough to be of any help to him in a war. I promise you, Father, Ao... I will become so strong that I will make Daigo himself fall at my feet," Mei said, wiping away the tears born of her helplessness.
"You have my full support in whatever you need, Mei," Ao said.
"I say the same. This generation is beginning to grow, and I believe it is time for you to assume full responsibility, Mei," her father said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Faced with this, for the very first time, Mei truly understood that in the shinobi world, being weak would never save you.
