Chapter 5 - Sitting Next to Her Wasn’t Part of the Plan

Rinato stepped into the classroom as usual, carrying his bag and a few notebooks. He tried to hold his breath, hoping today would go normally, like any other day: no attention, no problems, no overly lively interactions. Rinato's life was simple—he preferred sitting in the corner, quiet, observing the world from a distance.

However, this morning felt different. The teacher, smiling warmly yet firmly, began walking down the front of the class holding the seating chart. "Today, we'll be rotating seats," she announced. Her voice sounded like a gong of fate to Rinato.

He stared at the board and saw the students' names neatly written. His heart skipped a beat when his name was called: "Rinato – second row, next to Ayaka."

A small wave of panic surged in Rinato's chest. Ayaka—popular, beautiful, always surrounded by friends—would be sitting right beside him. "Oh no… why do I always have to end up next to her?!" he thought, pressing his hand to his chest, trying to remain calm.

Classmates began to notice Rinato and Ayaka. Some whispered quietly, their eyes full of curiosity. Rinato lowered his head, trying to hide behind his notebook. "Don't let them see… don't let them see… if they notice I'm nervous, I'll die of embarrassment," he thought.

Ayaka glanced at him, gave a slight smile, and greeted in a soft tone, "Hi, Rinato. Looks like we're sitting next to each other." Rinato froze. He tried to answer calmly, but words stuck in his throat. "Y-yeah… uh… yes…" he replied nervously.

The teacher observed all the students, gave brief instructions, and left them alone in the classroom. Rinato took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He realized that sitting next to Ayaka wasn't just a matter of physical proximity; it meant he had to maintain social distance, stay low-profile, and… remain polite.

During the first lesson, Rinato tried to focus on his notebook. Yet, his eyes kept drifting toward Ayaka. He noticed the small details—how she wrote, the slight smile when a friend joked nearby, and her white hair, neat yet simple.

Occasionally, Ayaka glanced at him, offering a faint smile, and Rinato froze each time. In his mind, he tried to reassure himself: "It's just sitting in class. Nothing special. Just… sitting next to her."

Some of Ayaka's close friends occasionally looked at Rinato, but he managed to hide his expression, pretending to focus on his notes. A funny scene played in Rinato's mind: "If I suddenly fall off my chair, that would look natural… right?" He stifled a small laugh internally.

By the end of the first period, Rinato realized something: although sitting next to Ayaka made him nervous, there was a strange warmth in his chest. He gave a small smile, thinking about the possibilities the upcoming days might hold.

After the first period ended, Rinato tried to calm himself. He kept his notebook open, occasionally glancing at his neighbor. Ayaka seemed relaxed, writing neatly, smiling softly whenever friends nearby joked. Rinato felt like a secret observer in a world full of light, because Ayaka was always surrounded by attention, while he… was almost invisible.

During the first break, the teacher allowed students to move freely. Rinato straightened his back, trying to stay focused on his notes. Suddenly, Ayaka turned to him, smiling, and asked lightly:

"Hi… Rinato, you left your PE book in the locker, right?"

Rinato's heart skipped. "Y-yeah… I forgot," he stammered. Internally, he panicked: "Oh no, she knows everything… stay calm… don't look awkward."

Ayaka just smiled faintly, then wrote in her notebook. Rinato watched her movements, admiring her calm composure. A funny thought crossed his mind: if a pile of books suddenly fell on Ayaka, it would be pure comedic chaos. He stifled a laugh, finding his own thoughts absurd.

Some of Ayaka's friends occasionally glanced at Rinato. He felt like he was on a stage he didn't want to be on. Every time their eyes met, Rinato immediately looked down, pretending to read notes. Humor continued in his mind: "If I suddenly fall, would it look natural… or end up as school gossip?"

Noticing Rinato's slight tension, Ayaka tried to ease the awkwardness. She placed a pen on Rinato's desk, saying lightly: "Here, it seems you forgot one." Rinato accepted it with trembling hands, trying to smile normally. "T-thanks… Ayaka-san," he replied.

This small scene continued for a few minutes, where they exchanged trivial talk—about homework, notes, or other minor things. Yet for Rinato, every word from Ayaka was simultaneously tense and warm. He began to realize: even sitting next to her while maintaining social distance made him anxious.

During a lesson, Rinato occasionally looked at Ayaka from the side. Her neatly arranged white hair, clear blue eyes, and faint smile made him smile quietly to himself. Another funny scene appeared in his mind: "If I suddenly fall asleep at my desk… would she pat my back or laugh at me?" Rinato stifled a laugh, realizing his imagination was running wild.

Finally, the bell for the second period rang. Students prepared for the next lesson. Rinato and Ayaka packed their bags but kept their eyes on their desks, maintaining enough distance so as not to draw attention. A warm yet awkward feeling hung in the air—something only they felt, yet could not explain to anyone else.

As the school day neared its end, Rinato packed his books, realizing today felt different from usual. While other classmates rushed out, he stayed seated a moment, waiting for Ayaka to finish at the neighboring desk.

Ayaka closed her book, glanced at Rinato, and gave a slight smile that immediately made him panic. "Don't let… don't let her friends notice… calm down, Rinato, calm down…" he thought, holding his breath.

They walked side by side toward the classroom door, keeping a safe distance so no one noticed their closeness. Yet, once in the quieter hallway, they naturally adjusted their pace. Rinato didn't know why his heart raced, but every movement of Ayaka's seemed captivating.

Her small yet warm smile, clear gaze, even the light gestures when closing her bag, made Rinato feel as if the world slowed down. He realized that the glances they shared weren't ordinary—they were a silent communication only they could understand.

A lighthearted thought made Rinato suppress a small laugh: "If I stumble, will she help me… or let me fall dramatically?" He looked down in embarrassment, feeling his thoughts were too wild. Ayaka, as if reading his tension, lightly patted his shoulder. Rinato nearly jumped but held himself together, trying not to look panicked.

They reached the stairs leading from the classroom floor to the exit. Ayaka paused briefly, looked at Rinato again, and said softly:

"Rinato, don't rush. Go home safely."

Rinato swallowed, trying to smile. "Y-yeah… Ayaka-san too."

The moment was brief, yet enough for Rinato to feel a strange warmth in his chest. They continued walking, maintaining a safe distance. Even without much conversation, there was understanding between them—as if words weren't always necessary to comprehend each other.

Outside the building, the sun leaned toward the west, casting soft light on the street. Rinato looked at Ayaka walking beside him, realizing one thing: his days with this new neighbor would be different from before. Every smile, every glance, every small interaction added a new color to Rinato's quiet life.

A sweet moment appeared when Rinato almost looked back to make sure Ayaka wasn't left behind but restrained himself. Ayaka seemed to know, glanced briefly with a smile, and they continued walking side by side without words. That simple look alone was enough to say: "We understand each other… but it stays our little secret."
