Chapter 80 - Rooftop Evening Calm

Jay POV

The elevator dinged softly, but I didn't hurry. I wanted a few minutes of calm before heading to the rooftop. The evening air smelled faintly of rain and concrete, warm yet crisp.

I stepped out onto the terrace, stretching slightly, feeling the city hum beneath my feet. The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving a soft glow over the skyline. Perfect timing—quiet, private, and just enough space for reflection.

I wasn't expecting anyone.

But then I heard it: the soft click of boots on tiles, deliberate, measured. My pulse quickened—not from fear, but because I knew that sound.

"Enjoying the view?" a familiar voice asked from just a few steps behind me.

I turned. Keifer stood there, hands in his pockets, jacket slung over one shoulder. Relaxed. Calm. He wasn't rushing me. He wasn't demanding. And somehow, that made him even more… dangerous.

"I could ask you the same," I replied evenly, keeping my tone light. I let my gaze sweep over the city, letting him feel my distance without turning my back entirely.

"Maybe I just like rooftops," he said, his lips twitching into a smirk. "Or maybe I like the company."

I didn't laugh. Not yet. Instead, I tilted my head, teasing. "Careful, Keifer. You're dangerously close to sounding sincere."

His smile widened. "Sincere is overrated. Flirting is more fun."

I arched an eyebrow. "Flirting, huh? I wouldn't have pegged you for subtlety."

"Subtlety doesn't get results with you," he murmured.

I froze just slightly—enough for him to notice—and quickly shook it off. Calm. Controlled. Untouchable, I reminded myself.

Keifer POV

Her posture, her aura, her calm—everything about her made me want to step closer, to close the gap between us, but I held myself back. Not reckless this time. Patience. Playful patience.

"You're thinking again," she said, eyes narrowing, lips twitching with that smirk that drove me mad.

I leaned casually against the railing, keeping my distance. "Maybe. But you make it hard not to."

She laughed softly, the sound floating in the evening air. "Careful, Keifer. You're treading dangerous territory."

"Dangerous is my specialty," I said, letting my voice drop slightly. "And I happen to like it."

Her gaze met mine, sharp and calculating, but softer than usual. She didn't back away. That tiny detail made my chest tighten in a way I refused to admit out loud.

Jay POV

I caught the faint flicker in his eyes—the brief pause, the hint of something unspoken. That was new. He wasn't chasing me like before. Not aggressively. Not recklessly.

And that unsettled me more than his obsession ever could.

I shifted my stance slightly, letting my shoulder brush the railing closer to his side—just enough for him to notice, not enough to invite contact.

"Not going to apologize this time?" I asked, teasing, but with a softer undertone.

"Not unless you want me to," he replied smoothly. His gaze lingered. There was humor in it. Respect. And a trace of longing.

I rolled my eyes lightly, but my chest warmed. "I don't want empty words," I said.

"You won't get them," he assured me.

Lucas POV

From the neighboring balcony, I watched silently, barely breathing.

No confrontation. No chaos. Just Keifer and Jay… negotiating tension, word by word, glance by glance.

Dangerous. Electric. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly concerned for him. Or her.

They weren't together yet—but this was progress. Subtle. Quiet. Terrifying.

Keifer POV

The wind shifted, carrying the faint scent of her hair, the warmth of her presence closer than it should be.

"I could stay here all night," I said, half to myself, half to her.

"Why?" she asked, eyebrow raised. "To stare at me?"

"Maybe," I admitted, letting my smirk show. "Or maybe to enjoy not being at war with you… for once."

Her lips curved. "Careful. You might get used to it."

"And maybe I already have," I murmured, letting my gaze linger on hers just a fraction too long.

She tilted her head, as if weighing my words. "We're not done," she said finally. "Not everything is fixed. But… we're okay. For now."

I nodded slowly, smiling faintly. "For now," I echoed.

And somehow, that was enough.

Ending Beat

The sun fully set, leaving only the city lights and the soft glow of rooftop lamps.

They didn't touch. They didn't kiss.

But the tension had softened.

The edges had blurred.

They were slowly, carefully, inch by inch, becoming… okay.

And for both of them, that was a dangerous kind of progress.
