Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: THE NIGHT OF TERROR

The basement erupted.

Bathsheba's scream tore through the air, not anger, not the calculated fury of the past hours, but something rawer. The sound of a wound being ripped open after two centuries of festering.

"MY DAUGHTER IS DEAD BECAUSE OF THEM!"

The stone walls cracked. Literal fissures splitting the ancient masonry, dust and debris raining down. The floor beneath us heaved like a living thing, knocking Father Gorman to his knees.

"ALL OF THEM! EVERY MOTHER WHO LIVED IN MY HOME! THEY HAD WHAT I LOST! THEY DIDN'T DESERVE IT!"

Carolyn's body moved in ways that violated every law of anatomy. Her spine bent backward until her head nearly touched her heels. Her arms twisted at impossible angles. Her mouth opened wider than any human mouth should open, and from it poured a sound that was part scream, part sob, part the accumulated grief of generations.

[ENTITY RAGE: MAXIMUM]

[PSYCHIC ASSAULT: INCOMING]

[WARNING: SHIELDS COMPROMISED]

I raised my Mental Walls, reinforced them with everything I had left. The assault hit like a freight train, not just force this time, but emotion. Bathsheba's grief and rage and guilt and horror, two hundred years of suffering compressed into a single psychic barrage.

The walls held for one second. Two.

Then they shattered.

The darkness took me. Not unconsciousness, worse. I was drowning in Bathsheba's memories, her pain, her endless torment. I felt what she felt when she realized what she'd done. I heard her daughter's last breath. I experienced the moment she stepped off the stool beneath the tree, the rope tightening around her throat.

And beneath it all, that voice. That terrible, patient voice.

You belong to me now. Forever.

Something cracked in my chest. Not metaphorical, physical. Ribs giving way under the psychic pressure. I flew backward, hit the stone wall, felt more bones break on impact.

The pain was distant. Everything was distant except the darkness and Bathsheba's endless screaming.

[SOUL INTEGRITY: 85/115 → 45/115]

[PSYCHIC STAMINA: 30/135 → 15/135]

[CRITICAL DAMAGE. RECOVERY REQUIRED]

[WARNING: CONTINUED ASSAULT MAY BE FATAL]

"PAUL!"

Lorraine's voice, cutting through the darkness. I clung to it like a lifeline, using it to pull myself back toward consciousness.

I was on the floor. The basement was chaos. Father Gorman still praying, his voice hoarse but unwavering. Ed was shouting something I couldn't hear. And Carolyn. Bathsheba, was focused entirely on me now.

"The wrong soul," she hissed, Carolyn's body crawling toward me like a spider. "The anomaly. You don't belong here. You think you can save them? You couldn't save yourself!"

She reached for me. Carolyn's hands, twisted into claws, inches from my face.

"I will tear you apart and show them what you really are. Let them see the pretender. The fraud. The thing wearing human..."

"BATHSHEBA!"

Lorraine's voice cracked like a whip. The possessed woman's head snapped toward her, distracted from me for one crucial moment.

"The baby wasn't your fault!"

Carolyn's body went rigid.

"The voice lied to you! It promised your daughter would live, but it was always going to take her! You were manipulated, used, from the very beginning!"

Something changed in Bathsheba's expression. The rage flickered, and beneath it I saw what Lorraine had been searching for: the human part, buried but not destroyed. The mother who had loved her child enough to damn herself trying to save her.

"You were a mother who loved her daughter," Lorraine continued, her voice soft now, compassionate. "What happened wasn't because you were evil. It was because you were desperate. Because you would have done anything to save her."

Carolyn's twisted body began to straighten. The impossible contortions slowly normalized. And in the eyes that had burned with centuries of hatred, I saw something I never expected to see.

Grief. Pure, uncomplicated, ancient grief.

"She was so small," Bathsheba whispered, and now it was her true voice, not the demon's mockery, but the woman's sorrow. "So sick. I just wanted her to live."

"I know." Lorraine moved closer, hands extended, no fear in her posture. "I know you did."

Ed caught me before I could fall again.

"Stay with me, kid." His voice was rough with worry. "We're almost there. Don't you dare give up now."

I tried to respond. My chest felt full of broken glass. Every breath was agony. My vision swam with dark spots.

"I'm not done," I managed. The words came out as barely a whisper. "I'm not..."

"You're hurt. Bad. But we're close. Lorraine's found the path." He helped me to my feet, taking most of my weight on his shoulder. "Just a little longer."

I looked at the scene before us. Lorraine and Bathsheba, facing each other in the center of the basement. Father Gorman's prayers continuing in the background, softer now, more like a hymn than an exorcism. And Carolyn's body, still occupied, but no longer fighting. The possession was weakening.

"She's afraid," I said. "For the first time in two hundred years."

"Afraid of what?"

"Of hope. Of the possibility that there might be something on the other side besides eternal damnation." I leaned harder on Ed, conserving what little strength I had left. "She's been trapped in her own guilt for so long. What if someone finally offered her a way out?"

Ed was quiet for a moment. "That's not usually how exorcisms work."

"No. But maybe it should be."

The basement had grown warmer. The oppressive weight that had saturated the air since we descended was lifting, degree by degree. Whatever Lorraine was doing, it was working.

The war wasn't over yet. But dawn was coming.

Every story I'm writing is its own world. This is just one of them.

The others exist too, all under one roof.
