Seven Years Ago – The Blood Ravine
Sixteen-year-old Morana was on her knees, screaming.
They had been ambushed by rogue mages, mercenaries hired to capture the Ice Prodigy for illegal underground experimentation. There were twenty of them. Morana could have killed them all. She had the power.
But she had hesitated. She had looked at her own hands, terrified of her curse. She remembered the villagers' faces. She didn't want to be a monster. She didn't want to kill.
Because she hesitated, a mercenary had slipped past her guard with a poisoned blade.
Morgan had thrown himself in front of it.
Now, her older brother lay bleeding in the dirt. His vibrant, warm fire was flickering, turning to dull, gray ash.
"B-Brother..." Morana sobbed, grabbing his hand. But for the first time in her life, his hand felt colder than hers.
The mercenaries were laughing, closing in to claim their prize.
Morgan coughed up blood, his grip tightening weakly on her fingers. "Morana... listen to me..."
"I'll freeze them! I'll kill them all, just hold on!"
"No..." Morgan smiled weakly, his eyes dimming. "Don't let them... make you a monster. But don't... don't be soft either."
He reached up, wiping a freezing tear from her cheek.
"Ice isn't evil, Morana. The world out there... it's cruel. It will exploit your warmth. It will kill you for your hesitation." His hand fell to the dirt. "Build your walls high, Morana. Make your ice absolute. Never... never let them see you melt."
Morgan's fire went out.
In the ravine that day, Morana didn't just freeze the twenty mercenaries. She froze the trees, the earth, the sky itself. And she froze her own heart, vowing never to let warmth in again. Warmth was naive. Warmth got the people you loved killed. That was why she had tortured Aze a year ago, she wanted to crush that naive, fiery optimism out of him before the world did it for her.
Arena Floor – Present
Aze was ten feet away. Five feet. The blue fire of his Meteor Strike was roaring, a suicidal, beautiful display of human willpower.
He's just like Morgan, Morana realized. He's going to throw his life away for a single moment of bright, fiery glory.
But Morana was no longer the scared sixteen-year-old girl who hesitated. And she was no longer the cruel, traumatized woman who just wanted to punish the world for taking her brother.
Seeing Aze's determination, seeing the blue flame that reminded her so fiercely of Morgan's protective fire, snapped something perfectly into place within her soul. Build your walls high.
She wouldn't punish Aze for his warmth. But she wouldn't let him burn himself alive, either. She would show him what absolute perfection looked like.
Instead of raising an ice wall to block the massive blue meteor, Morana did the unthinkable.
She dropped her guard.
Observation Deck
"What is she doing?!" Mist shouted, leaning over the rail. "She dropped her armor!"
"She's committing suicide!" Aze's fans screamed in the stands.
Arena Floor
Aze's eyes widened in panic. His blade was inches from her chest. If he hit her without her armor, with this much power, he would cut her in half. He tried to pull the strike back, his inherent goodness forcing him to hesitate, just like Morana once had.
Never hesitate, Morana thought.

Morana didn't block. She stepped forward, directly into the polished, frozen ice beneath her own feet.
To Krad's stunned eyes, it looked like she fell into the floor like it was a pool of water. Aze's devastating blue-flame sword cleaved through empty air, the sheer momentum of his Meteor Strike carrying him forward, totally unbalanced by the sudden lack of resistance.
Before Aze could even blink, a reflection in the ice behind him materialized.
Morana rose flawlessly from the frozen floor directly at Aze's back.
She didn't summon a sword. She didn't summon a spear. She simply raised two fingers, completely devoid of any killing intent, and gently tapped the back of Aze's neck, right where his blazing aura met his skin.
"Absolute Zero"
The spell didn't attack Aze's fire. It bypassed it completely. Morana targeted the freezing sweat on Aze's own skin, sending a micro-current of absolute zero directly into his nervous system.
It was a surgical, non-lethal strike of unimaginable precision.
Aze's blue flames didn't explode, they simply blinked out of existence.
His eyes rolled back. His momentum completely halted.
For a second, Aze began to fall forward toward the hard ice. But Morana's hand shot out, grabbing him by the collar of his uniform, gently lowering his unconscious body to the frosted arena floor so he wouldn't crack his skull.
The arena was completely, utterly silent. The steam slowly cleared, revealing Morana standing over the defeated, but perfectly unharmed, Aze Crimsonwind.

[ Winner by Knockout: Morana Blackthorn ]
The referee lowered his hand, his voice echoing in the quiet Colosseum. "Winner... Morana Blackthorn!"
The crowd erupted. It wasn't the bloodthirsty roar they had given Krad and Brick. It was a roar of sheer awe. They had just witnessed a masterpiece of magical control, a Level 445 fighter diffusing a suicidal ultimate attack without spilling a single drop of blood.
Observation Deck
Mist let out a long, slow breath. "That was... terrifyingly beautiful."
"She could have killed him," Hania whispered, her hands over her heart. "With his momentum, she could have manifested a single spike and he would have impaled himself. But she chose to pacify him instead."
Krad stared down at the arena, his golden eyes wide, his heart hammering against his bruised ribs. He had just learned a massive lesson. Combat wasn't just about hitting harder. It wasn't just about willpower, either. What Morana just did... that perfect, emotionless read of Aze's hesitation, followed by a flawless, non-lethal counter, that was absolute mastery.
She didn't just beat him, Krad realized. She protected him from his own attack.
Arena Floor
Medical teams rushed onto the ice, slipping and sliding as they hurried toward Aze.
Morana stood over him for a moment longer. The frost on her armor began to recede, revealing her pale, unreadable face.
She looked down at the unconscious red-haired boy. He had lost, but he had forced her to remember the warmth she had buried.
"You did grow up, boy," Morana whispered, her voice so quiet only she and the ice could hear it. "Your fire is strong. Don't let the world extinguish it."
She turned and began walking back toward the winner's tunnel, her platinum braid swaying behind her.
As she walked, she looked up toward the Observation Deck. Her pale blue eyes swept across the crowd, eventually locking directly onto Krad in his hovering wheelchair.
She just stared at him, acknowledging the other anomaly of the tournament, before disappearing into the shadows of the tunnel.
Krad swallowed hard, gripping the armrests of his chair.

"Captain," Krad said, not taking his eyes off the dark tunnel where Morana had vanished.
"Yeah, kid?"
"I need to meditate," Krad said, the weight of the upcoming battles settling heavily onto his broken body. "I need to heal faster. Because if I have to face someone like her... willpower isn't going to be enough."
Mist placed a hand on Krad's shoulder, his grip firm and reassuring. "I know. Let's get you back to the ward. We have work to do."
