Chapter 153 - Chapter 143: The Highland Park Prom

Volume 5: The Recruiting War

Date: May 1993.

Location: The Cooper House / Dallas Country Club.

Event: The Senior Prom.

Part 1: The Tuxedo Crisis

The Cooper living room looked like the staging area for a highly unorganized theatrical production.

Mary Cooper was sitting on the edge of the coffee table, a needle and black thread clamped between her lips, frantically trying to reattach a button to the sleeve of a massive tuxedo jacket.

Standing in front of her, looking incredibly uncomfortable in a crisp white dress shirt and suspenders, was Larry Allen.

"I didn't even flex, Mrs. Cooper," Larry apologized softly, his deep voice filled with genuine guilt. "I just reached for a dinner roll and the sleeve popped right off."

"It's not your fault, Larry," Mary reassured him around the needle. She pulled the thread through, knotting it with expert precision. "These rental places just don't make suits for boys with your shoulder span. There. Good as new. Just try not to do any sudden reaching tonight."

Georgie walked down the stairs, adjusting his own bowtie. He had opted for a classic, tailored black tuxedo. He didn't have the nervous energy of a typical high school senior going to prom. After facing down furious linebackers and CeCe Rhodes, pinning a boutonnière felt like a walk in the park.

George Sr. was standing by the front door, holding a bulky Polaroid camera. He looked incredibly proud.

"Alright, everyone into the living room," George Sr. directed, waving his hand. "Zach, Jimmy, get in here. Eric, you too."

Zach Thomas jogged into the room, looking sharp but clearly wishing he was wearing cleats. Jimmy Smith was entirely in his element, checking his reflection in the hallway mirror and adjusting the cuffs of his pristine white jacket.

Eric van der Woodsen strolled into the living room, wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo. Since it was an actual formal event, he had dressed for the occasion. He stood next to Missy, who was wearing a dark, elegant slip dress.

"I still don't understand why we are attending this," Eric murmured to Missy, offering a polite, practiced smile for George Sr.'s camera. "I have navigated these Highland Park legacy events for two years, and the booster club's catering budget is always notoriously uninspired."

"We're going because it's free food and we get to watch the boosters' kids try to dance," Missy whispered back, leaning into his shoulder. "Consider it a sociological study."

"Smile!" George Sr. called out. The Polaroid flashed brightly, capturing the chaotic, blended family of Texas football players, New York elite, and Cooper siblings.

The doorbell rang. Georgie turned around and opened the door.

Serena van der Woodsen stood on the porch. She was wearing a floor-length, shimmering gold gown that perfectly caught the warm Texas evening light. Her hair was swept back, and she looked absolutely breathtaking.

Georgie stopped adjusting his tie. He just stared at her.

"Wow," Georgie breathed, stepping out onto the porch.

Serena's face lit up with a radiant smile. "You clean up pretty well yourself, Quarterback."

Part 2: The Country Club

The Dallas Country Club had been completely rented out for the Highland Park Senior Prom, a testament to the school's premium pedigree and massive booster funding. The grand ballroom was decorated with floating lights, ice sculptures, and an oversized dance floor.

Georgie and Serena walked through the double doors, hand in hand. Almost immediately, the crowd parted slightly.

They weren't just popular; Georgie was the back-to-back State Champion who had officially secured his ticket to Stanford, and Serena was Upper East Side royalty. Georgie carried a quiet, undeniable gravity that commanded respect without him having to say a word.

"It's weird," Serena whispered, leaning closer to him over the heavy bass of the music.

"What is?" Georgie asked, guiding her toward a reserved table near the windows.

"Nobody is scheming," Serena smiled, looking around the room at the wealthy legacy students. "My grandmother is back in New York. The scouts are gone. The SATs are done. We're just... at a dance."

Georgie pulled her chair out for her. "I told you we'd get here. Tonight is just a victory lap."

At the table next to them, Eric and Missy were already setting up their base of operations. Eric had procured two glasses of sparkling cider and was currently inspecting a plate of appetizers with deep suspicion.

"The crab puffs are acceptable," Eric noted, handing a napkin to Missy. He looked across the room at a group of legacy students he had been tolerating since his arrival in Texas. "However, the DJ just transitioned from Madonna to a country line dance. I give the structural integrity of this party forty-five minutes before it collapses into total anarchy."

"I give it twenty," Missy countered, happily eating a crab puff. "Jimmy is already challenging the defensive line to a dance-off near the speakers."

Eric looked over. Jimmy Smith was indeed in the center of a growing circle, spinning smoothly to the music, while Zach Thomas aggressively refused to participate, treating the dance circle like a hostile blitz package.

"Fascinating," Eric drawled, sitting back and enjoying the show.

Part 3: The Anchor

Later in the evening, the lights dimmed, and a slow song echoed through the ballroom.

Georgie stood up, offering his hand to Serena. She took it, and he led her out onto the crowded floor. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, while she rested her hands on his shoulders.

They swayed gently to the music, insulated from the noise and the flashing lights around them.

"I'm going to miss this place," Serena murmured, resting her head against his chest.

Georgie looked around the room. He saw his teammates laughing. He saw Eric and Missy quietly judging the decor. He had built an empire here at Highland Park. He had protected his family, secured their futures, and dominated the elite culture of the school.

"It was a good run," Georgie agreed softly. "But California is going to be better."

Serena pulled back just enough to look him in the eyes. The gold promise ring on her right hand glinted in the dim light.

"Stanford," Serena smiled. "No more high school drama."

"Just college drama," Georgie corrected with a smirk. "I'm going to be a freshman again. Bottom of the depth chart. I have to start all over."

"You have the System," Serena reminded him. "And you have me. You'll have the starting job by October."

Georgie laughed, a warm, relaxed sound. He leaned down and kissed her, completely ignoring the crowded dance floor and the lingering stares of the Highland Park elite.

Tonight wasn't about football analytics or high-society leverage. It was just a Friday night, and for the first time in a year, Georgie Cooper didn't have to be anything other than a normal teenager enjoying the moment.
