Chapter 86 – "The Detector" Glitches
"Who is it?" Chandler, being closest to the door, muttered as he got up to answer it.
Outside stood Antonio Ricci, manager of Alessandro's, the upscale Italian restaurant where Monica worked as head chef.
He wore a severe black suit, his hair perfectly slicked back, but right now his usually polished professional demeanor had been replaced by an expression so dark it looked ready to storm.
"Mr. Ricci?" Chandler blinked in surprise, recognizing Monica's boss, and instinctively stepped aside to let him in.
Antonio offered no greeting; his gaze swept the living room and locked onto Monica, who was just emerging from the hallway in a fresh shirt.
He walked straight toward her. "Monica Geller!" His voice wasn't particularly loud, yet it was cold as ice; everyone immediately sensed trouble brewing.
Monica's stomach dropped—she knew something was seriously wrong. She forced a professional smile. "Mr. Ricci? What brings you by—"
"What brings me?" Antonio cut her off with a bitter laugh, slapping a thick manila envelope onto the dining table with a sharp crack. "I'm here to deliver this!" He yanked out an official-looking document.
"Corporate audit!" Antonio's voice rose sharply, thick with barely suppressed fury and genuine panic. "Because of you! Because of those damn promotional discount vouchers you accepted from West Valley Ranch!"
He practically jabbed a finger toward Monica's face. "Now the auditors are calling it 'improper vendor relations'—essentially a kickback scheme! The entire purchasing process is under investigation. My quarterly performance bonus is gone! The restaurant's standing within the corporate group is plummeting. Headquarters is even questioning my management competence!"
He was breathing hard, chest heaving, eyes blazing with anger and fear. "Do you understand what this means, Monica? This is serious trouble—major trouble! For me, for Alessandro's, for everyone!"
"Kickback?" Monica's face flushed bright red; blood rushed to her head, her voice trembling with outrage and disbelief.
"It was a standard promotional voucher the supplier handed out during their end-of-quarter sale! John gives them to every executive chef he works with! Half the kitchen staff was there when he distributed them! How is that possibly a kickback? It's standard industry practice—used to negotiate better wholesale pricing!"
"Practice?" Antonio sneered, his eyes razor-sharp. "The audit report is black and white. The volume of Premium Angus Ribeye you signed for doesn't match up with documented sales or waste disposal records—there's a significant discrepancy. Add in this 'promotional voucher' and the auditors only see red flags; they don't care about your 'industry practices'!"
He stepped closer, voice dropping to something more dangerous. "Now Alessandro's is flagged corporate-wide as 'high-risk operations.' Headquarters wants a full investigation—and they want someone held accountable as an example!"
He inhaled sharply, fighting to steady his voice. "For gross violation of company purchasing policies and professional ethics standards—Monica Geller, your employment is terminated, effective immediately. Here's your written termination notice."
He thrust the paper toward her. "Your final paycheck and accrued vacation time will be processed according to standard procedures."
The document lay there, cold and official on the table.
The entire living room fell deathly silent. Everyone was stunned by the sudden catastrophe—and by those harsh words: "kickback," "high-risk," "held accountable."
Monica stared at the termination letter, then jerked her head up to look at Antonio, her lips trembling; a tidal wave of hurt and righteous fury crashed over her.
"I didn't..." she finally managed through clenched teeth. Tears welled up without warning; she bit her lip hard trying to keep them from falling.
Antonio looked emotionally drained himself. Without meeting her eyes again, he waved a dismissive hand, his voice flat and distant. "That's everything. Goodbye, Miss Geller." He turned sharply and walked out; the heavy slam of the door struck like a physical blow to everyone's hearts.
The instant it shut, Monica's legs gave out and she collapsed into a chair by the dining table. The tears she'd been holding back came flooding out. She covered her face with her hands, shoulders shaking with sobs.
"Monica..." Rachel was immediately at her side, kneeling to wrap her in a tight hug, her own voice cracking. "This is absolutely insane! It was just a promotional voucher! Everyone here knows you would never take a kickback!"
"Exactly!" Chandler jumped up, voice raised in indignation. "Do these corporate auditors live in some alternate reality? A standard supplier promotion qualifies as bribery now?"
Phoebe sat on Monica's other side, gently rubbing her back. "Oh sweetie, this is so unfair. They must have made some terrible mistake with the numbers. We all know how much you love your job, how much you care about quality and doing everything right!"
Bruce picked up the termination notice from the table, scanning it quickly, his frown deepening. "Monica, Antonio is obviously terrified by corporate's audit and desperate to protect himself. He has to know what really happened here. I worked summers at my dad's restaurant back in high school—promotional vouchers like this are completely standard industry tools for negotiating fair wholesale prices. They're nothing remotely like kickbacks. The auditors are just looking at spreadsheets in a vacuum; they don't understand actual restaurant operations."
He set the paper down firmly. "This is absolutely not your fault."
Ross, still holding little Ben, added with barely contained anger, "That's right, Monica. Discrepancies between purchase volumes and sales can result from a dozen legitimate factors—spoilage variations, inventory recording errors, different accounting periods... Jumping straight to 'kickback' based on one promotional voucher is completely outrageous! It's an insult to your professional integrity!"
Rachel hugged Monica tighter, voice soft but fierce. "Monica, we all believe you. This wasn't a kickback. You're the most dedicated, ethical chef anyone could ask for. You care about the restaurant's reputation and ingredient quality more than anyone. Firing you is their enormous loss."
The chorus of support from her friends—angry, protective, indignant on her behalf—surrounded Monica like a warm protective blanket. She lifted her tear-streaked face to look at each of them, tried to thank them but could only manage a grateful nod as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.
Just then, little Ben, who had been remarkably quiet in Ross's arms, seemed drawn by the emotional atmosphere. He stopped gnawing on his thumb and fixed his bright, curious dark eyes directly on Monica.
Before anyone could react, Ben's chubby, slightly drool-damp hand reached out clumsily toward her.
"Ah..." he made a soft, questioning sound.
Ross blinked, a strange intuition rising in his chest. He crouched down carefully, bringing Ben closer to Monica.
Ben's clear eyes studied her face intently, appearing puzzled by her tears, and then his outstretched hand gently patted her wet cheek.
Monica froze—then a tremulous, tearful smile broke across her face.
"Hey there, little guy..." she whispered, voice thick with emotion, tentatively reaching toward Ross. "Can I... hold him?"
Ross gently transferred Ben into Monica's waiting arms.
Something remarkable happened.
Ben's eyes followed the movement as Monica's arms wrapped around him, and this time he didn't resist or cry out; he settled peacefully into her embrace, perfectly content!
