Chapter 1: After the Split
The classroom no longer belonged to one side.
That was the first thing everyone noticed.
Desks had shifted overnight—not officially, not by instruction, but by choice. Two clear sections had formed. Not equal. Not balanced. But undeniable.
Lucien's side was quieter.
Marcus's side was louder.
And the space between them—
Untouched.
Lucien entered as he always did.
Calm. Measured.
But this time, the room didn't react the same way.
Some students greeted him. Others didn't. A few simply watched.
That was enough.
Eli dropped into his seat beside him. "Feels different."
"It is," Lucien replied.
Eli glanced across the room. "You're really just going to accept this?"
Lucien followed his gaze.
Marcus was already there, speaking to his group—confident, composed, completely at ease in the attention.
"No," Lucien said quietly. "I'm going to understand it."
The teacher entered, pausing slightly at the sight of the divided room.
"I see you've all made your decision," she said.
No one responded.
She exhaled softly. "Then we move forward as planned. Two groups. Two approaches."
A pause.
"But one result."
That got their attention.
"The next stage of the academic forum will evaluate not just ideas," she continued, "but execution. Only one group will be selected to represent the school officially."
Silence fell.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Eli leaned closer. "So this isn't just practice anymore."
Lucien's eyes didn't leave the front.
"No," he said. "Now it matters."
Across the room, Marcus smiled faintly.
"Looks like we have a real competition," he said, loud enough to carry.
Lucien stood.
Not abruptly. Not emotionally.
Deliberately.
"Then let's make it clear," Lucien said, voice steady.
The room quieted instantly.
"This isn't about sides anymore," he continued. "It's about results."
His gaze moved across both groups.
"If you chose to stand here," he said, "then stand with purpose."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Agreed," he said. "Because this time—there's no excuse for failure."
The tension locked into place.
No more uncertainty.
No more hesitation.
This was no longer a divided classroom.
It was a competition.
And for the first time—
There would be a winner.
