The guild hall was louder than Kael expected.
Wooden tables filled most of the room, some scarred from years of use. Adventurers sat in small groups, laughing loudly, arguing over quests, or quietly nursing mugs of ale. Weapons leaned against chairs and walls—swords, spears, axes, staffs—each one telling a story Kael didn't know yet. The smell of food, metal, and old wood mixed together in the air.
Kael stood near the counter, his newly issued adventurer card still warm in his hand.
Name: **Kael Grey**
Rank: **F**
It wasn't much, but it was real.
He turned the card over slowly, letting the weight of it sink in. This small piece of metal meant freedom. It meant work. It meant he had finally stepped into the world outside the orphanage for good.
Lyria leaned closer to him, peeking at the card. "So that's it? You're officially an adventurer now?"
Kael nodded. "Looks like it."
She smiled brightly. "That's amazing. Most people take years before they even try."
Kael scratched the back of his head. "I don't know about amazing. I just… need to get stronger."
She didn't tease him for that. Instead, she looked at him with quiet respect. "That's still a good reason."
The guild clerk cleared his throat. "Your card's valid immediately. You can take any F-rank quests from the board. Payment is listed. Report back here once it's done."
Kael bowed slightly. "Thank you."
As they stepped away from the counter, Kael's eyes moved to the large quest board mounted on the far wall. Sheets of parchment were pinned across it in neat rows, each one marked with a rank and a short description.
"Let's see…" Kael muttered as he approached.
Lyria followed, hands clasped behind her back. "Most beginners start with gathering quests or monster subjugations near town."
Kael scanned the board carefully.
— Gather healing herbs near the eastern fields
— Deliver supplies to a nearby farm
— Clear rats from a storage cellar
— Escort merchant wagon to the next town
Nothing glamorous. Nothing heroic.
But Kael didn't feel disappointed.
"These are fine," he said quietly. "Simple work is still work."
He reached up and pulled one parchment free.
**Quest:** Clear wolves near the north forest trail
**Rank:** F
**Reward:** 5 silver coins
Lyria tilted her head. "Wolves? Isn't that dangerous for a first quest?"
Kael shrugged. "I've fought worse than wolves. And they're close to town. If things go bad, I can retreat."
She studied his face for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. Just don't do anything reckless."
He smiled faintly. "I'll try."
They left the guild together, stepping back into the afternoon sunlight. The town felt different now. Kael noticed things he hadn't before—how guards stood near important corners, how merchants watched adventurers carefully, how some people looked at his sword with interest or caution.
"So," Lyria said as they walked, "when are you leaving?"
"Now," Kael answered. "No reason to wait."
She hesitated, then asked softly, "Can I walk with you to the forest edge?"
Kael glanced at her. "Sure."
They took the northern road, the stone path slowly giving way to dirt and grass. The town noise faded behind them, replaced by birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.
Lyria walked beside him, quieter than before.
"You didn't have to help me earlier," she said suddenly.
Kael looked at her. "I know."
"Most people wouldn't," she continued. "They'd look away. Or pretend they didn't hear."
Kael stopped walking.
He turned to face her, his expression calm but firm. "Then most people are wrong."
She swallowed, nodding slowly.
After a moment, she smiled again. "I'm glad you're not like them."
They reached the edge of the forest soon after. Tall trees rose above them, their shadows stretching across the path. The air felt cooler here, heavier.
Kael adjusted his grip on his sword.
"This is where I go alone," he said.
Lyria nodded, though her fingers clenched slightly at her sides. "Be careful."
He gave her a small nod. "I will."
As Kael stepped into the forest, the sounds of the town fully disappeared. Every footstep felt deliberate. Every rustle made his senses sharpen.
He moved carefully, just like he had trained for years.
After some time, he found signs—broken branches, claw marks on tree trunks, disturbed ground. Wolves. At least three, maybe more.
Kael slowed his breathing.
*Don't rush,* he told himself. *Observe first.*
A low growl echoed through the trees.
Kael turned just in time to see a gray wolf emerge from the brush, teeth bared. Another followed. Then a third.
They circled him, keeping their distance.
Kael drew his sword.
The blade caught the light filtering through the leaves.
One wolf lunged.
Kael stepped aside and slashed downward, his movement clean and controlled. The blade cut deep, and the wolf yelped, collapsing into the dirt.
The second wolf attacked from behind.
Kael twisted, blocking with the flat of his blade, then kicked forward hard. The wolf stumbled back, and Kael didn't give it time to recover. One clean strike ended it.
The last wolf hesitated.
Kael met its eyes.
"Go," he said quietly.
The wolf backed away slowly, then turned and fled into the trees.
Kael exhaled.
His hands didn't shake. His breathing stayed steady.
*Good,* he thought. *No wasted movement.*
He cleaned his blade and marked the quest complete, then made his way back toward town.
By the time he returned to the guild, the sun was starting to lower.
The clerk took the proof and nodded. "Clean work. Here's your reward."
Five silver coins clinked into Kael's palm.
It wasn't much—but it was his.
Lyria was waiting near the entrance. When she saw him, her face lit up. "You're back already!"
Kael nodded. "Quest's done."
Her shoulders relaxed visibly. "I knew you'd be fine… but still."
He smiled. "Thanks for worrying."
As they stepped outside together, Kael felt something settle inside him.
This wasn't just about strength anymore.
It was about choices. About who he wanted to be.
And for the first time, the road ahead didn't feel lonely.
