Chapter 28 - Chapter - 27, I’M LEFT, I’M RIGHT

THE VIEWING ROOM

Before their turn came, the class gathered in the monitoring room to watch the first match: Midoriya and Uraraka versus Bakugo and Iida.

The screen flickered to life, showing the brutal, visceral clash between the two childhood rivals. The room was silent as Bakugo unleashed a massive, building-shaking explosion from his gauntlets. Riko leaned against the back wall, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed as she watched the screen.

When Midoriya finally unleashed his "comet" punch, shattering the floors above to give Uraraka the opening she needed, the class erupted in gasps.

"They're crazy," Kaminari whispered, his face pale. "Is this really just a class?"

Riko didn't join the cheering. She watched Bakugo's face on the monitor, the look of pure, shattered shock as he realised he had lost. It was a pivotal moment in the "story," one she knew was necessary for his growth, but seeing it in person made her chest ache.

"Poor Sparky," she murmured, her thumb tracing the edge of her tactical vest. "The 'king of the Playground' just found out the world is bigger than his backyard."

THIRD PERSON POV

"Team E, the Villain Team, take your positions! Team I, the Hero Team, prepare for entry!"

All Might's voice boomed over the speakers, signaling the start of the five-minute setup period. Inside the designated building, Riko and Momo stood beside the large, nuclear weapon on the fifth floor. The air was still, smelling of dust and old concrete.

"Hey, Momo-chan, let's talk," Riko said, breaking the silence. She leaned against the bomb, her yellow goggles perched on her head. "Listen. Todoroki isn't the type to play cat and mouse. He likes efficiency. He's going to try to end this in five seconds."

Momo blinked, her hand going to her chin in thought. "You mean... a wide-scale attack?"

"The entire building," Riko nodded grimly. "He's probably going to freeze everything. The floors, the walls, our feet. If we're touching the ground when he lets go, it's game over. I will protect us from most of it, but I need you to be our brains. We need to turn this building into a nightmare for them."

Momo's eyes sharpened. "I understand. If he relies on such a massive output, he'll expect us to be immobilized. We can use that arrogance against him."

For the next four minutes, the two girls moved like a well-oiled machine. Momo's Quirk flickered as she produced various components. Following a rapid-fire strategic map Momo drew on the floor, they went to work. They rigged the hallways of the fourth and fifth floors, laying out a series of intricate, hidden traps.

"Final thirty seconds," Riko noted, checking her watch. She stepped toward Momo. "The wait is over. Hold on tight."

"Wait, Akaba-?!"

Before Momo could finish, Riko swept her off her feet in a perfect, effortless princess carry.

"R-Riko-san?!" Momo's face turned a shade of crimson that rivaled Todoroki's left side. "This is-"

"Trust me," Riko grinned, her eyes flashing with a competitive spark.

Outside, the siren wailed. The exercise had begun.

At the entrance on the ground floor, Shoto Todoroki stood calmly, his right hand hovering over the wall. Ojiro stood beside him, looking ready for a fight.

"Ojiro, wait outside for a minute," Shoto said tonelessly. "It's will be over soon"

"Uh, okay?" Ojiro stepped back, confused, as Todoroki pressed his palm to the building.

In an instant, a massive, crystalline wave of ice exploded from his hand. It screamed like a winter gale, racing up the stairwells and through the ventilation ducts, coating the stairs, the ceilings, and the floors in seconds..

Back at the fifth floor, the ice surged toward the bomb room like a tidal wave of jagged glass. Riko didn't panic. She crouched low, Momo clutched securely to her chest, and channelled a massive kinetic pulse into the soles of her combat boots, which she especially made, making them capable of launching her in a small burst. They could be used 5-8 times before having to be replaced.

(Author's note – just to clarify, Riko is only able to channel her energy through her hands, in the boots case, she charged it beforehand, controlling/delaying when the explosion goes off according to her need. Also, she can't hold the charge for more than a few hrs.)

"UP WE GO!"

BOOM!

Riko didn't just jump; she launched herself like a human rocket. Completely avoiding the frozen ground as the ice rumbled beneath her feet.

VIEWING ROOM

"WHOA!" Kirishima yelled, pointing at the screen. "Did you see that?! She avoided it!"

"She's carrying Yaoyorozu-san like a hero saving a maiden!" Mineta cried, though his tears were mostly out of jealousy. "Why does she get to be the cool one?!"

All Might's grin widened. She predicted the move? No... she read his personality. Extraordinary intuition to know he'd go for a total freeze right out of the gate. (author - _-)

THE BATTLEFIELD

Riko landed on a dry patch of a fifth-floor railing, finally putting a dizzy and flustered Momo down.

"Sorry about the 'maiden in distress' bit," Riko chuckled, adjusting her goggles.

Momo smoothed her costume, her professional mask returning despite her pink cheeks. "No, that was... highly efficient. Thank you."

"Right," Riko said, leaning back against the bomb. "Let's wait for them then"

A few minutes later, Todoroki and Ojiro began their ascent. Todoroki walked with absolute confidence, his footsteps crunching on the ice he had created. He expected to find two frozen statues. He didn't even have his guard up.

However, as they reached the third-floor landing, Todoroki paused.

Tied across the hallway were hundreds of strands of capture tape. They were crisscrossed like a complex spiderweb, but they were all encased in Todoroki's own ice, looking like brittle, frozen glass.

"They tried to set up a perimeter," Ojiro noted, poking a frozen strand with his tail. "But it's all useless now. The ice made the tape brittle. We can just walk through it."

Todoroki narrowed his eyes. "It's sloppy. Yaoyorozu is smarter than this."

Regardless, he stepped forward. He was convinced that his overwhelming power had rendered their strategy moot. He reached the heavy doors to the bomb room and kicked them open, his right side already frost-coated to finish any lingering resistance.

"It's over," Todoroki said.

He stopped.

In the center of the room, Momo was standing by the bomb, looking nervously at Riko. Riko, meanwhile, was leaning casually against the "nuclear weapon," one leg crossed over the other. She was literally cleaning her ear with her pinky finger, looking like she was waiting for a bus that was ten minutes late.

She looked up, saw the two of them, and let out a long, theatrical yawn.

"Oh," Riko said, finally dropping her hand and giving them a lazy, lopsided grin. "You finally made it. Took your sweet time, didn't you, Icy-Hot?"

Todoroki's eyes widened. He looked at the floor, it was frozen. How were they not affected by it? He looked back at Riko, who was completely unfazed by his move.

"How...?" Todoroki started, his voice losing its icy composure for the first time. "How are you not frozen?" but again regaining his composer, the stoic face reappearing he said "it doesn't matter, I just have to freeze you over-again", as he again stomp his feet as a gargantuan wave of jagged, crystalline ice erupted from the floor, far larger and more aggressive than the one he had used at the start of the match. It wasn't just a floor-freeze; it was a literal mountain of frost, surging forward to encase the entire room, and the two girls within it, in a tomb of solid ice.

In the viewing room, the students gasped. "He's going to crush them!" Ashido cried, her hands over her mouth.

Meanwhile on the screen, Riko Akabane wasn't running. She wasn't even flinching. As the wall of ice roared toward her, her grin didn't falter, it widened. She dropped low, slamming both her palms onto the cold concrete just as the first jagged shards reached her boots.

"Momo-chan, deep breath!" Riko yelled.

Riko didn't just release a blast. She did something far more surgical. She flooded the incoming ice with a high-frequency kinetic charge, specifically tuned to excite the water molecules at a molecular level. (author - don't come at me saying tis not how science works, I dunno no science, so forgive lil 'ol me dear)

The ice didn't shatter. It glowed.

A deep, pulsating orange light raced through the frost, and then…..BOOM.

Instead of a structural explosion that would have brought the ceiling down, the ice underwent an instantaneous phase change. Thousands of pounds of solid ice were violently sublimated into pressurized gas.

A massive, deafening hiss filled the room as the ice vanished, replaced by a thick, scalding fog of white steam. The cameras in the room were instantly obscured, leaving the viewing students staring at a screen of pure white.

"What happened?!" Kaminari shouted. "Did she blow up the building?!"

"No," All Might murmured, his eyes narrowing. "She used the ice as fuel. She turned his own attack into a smokescreen."

THE BATTLEFIELD

Shoto stood in the center of the steam, his right side steaming as his own cold met the hot vapor. He couldn't see more than two feet in front of him. His training kicked in; he lowered his center of gravity, his ears straining for the sound of footsteps.

The steam began to thin slightly, and a silhouette appeared.

There.

He saw Momo Yaoyorozu standing near the bomb, her hand raised to shield face from the steam. But she was alone.

Where is Akabane?

A spike of genuine panic, a rare emotion for the stoic Todoroki, rose in his chest. His head snapped to the left, then the right. He expected a projectile, or another blast.

He didn't expect the ceiling.

"An Important rule in a fight scene is-" Riko's voice echoed through the mist, coming from directly above him. "Don't forget to look up!"

Shoto tried to tilt his head, but he was a fraction of a second too slow. Riko had used the steam as a veil to launch herself off the wall, and now she was coming down like a meteor.

She delivered a brutal, kick squarely to Shoto's shoulder and chest.

CRACK.

The force was immense. Shoto was sent flying backward, his boots skidding uselessly on the damp floor as he was launched across the room. He slammed into the far wall with a thud.

Without missing a beat, Riko didn't follow up on Shoto. Instead, she pivoted on her heel and pounced on Ojiro, who was still trying to find his bearings in the fog.

"Hey, Tail-man!" Riko chirped, her hands glowing orange.

Ojiro reacted fast, swinging his powerful tail in a wide arc to keep her back, but Riko was like a blur. She ducked under the tail, stepped into his guard, and delivered a rapid-fire series of punches to his ribs and shoulders. They weren't enough to break bones, but the concussive force was enough to leave him breathless and reeling.

VIEWING ROOM

"Holy crap! She's a beast!" Kirishima cheered. "She took out Todoroki in one hit and now she's dismantling Ojiro!"

"She used the steam to hide her jump," Iida analyzed, his glasses glinting. "By targeting Todoroki first with a heavy blow, she removed the biggest threat before focusing on the teammate. It's a classic blitz strategy."

"Wait!" Jiro pointed at the screen, her voice urgent. "Todoroki-kun... he's not out!"

On the monitor, as the steam cleared further, they saw the wall where Shoto had crashed. He hadn't hit the concrete. At the very last micro-second before impact, he had grown a thick, curved cushion of ice behind his back to absorb the energy. He was slumped against it, coughing.

THE BATTLEFIELD

Riko was in the middle of a flurry with Ojiro when the temperature in the room plummeted again.

"Akabane-san! Behind you!" Momo warned.

Riko didn't even look. She leaped straight into the air, a "double-jump" created by a small burst from her boots. A split second later, a massive, jagged mountain of ice tore through the space she had just occupied, pinning Ojiro's tail to the floor in its wake.

"Ow! Hey!" Ojiro yelped, though he was safe from the worst of it.

Riko landed on top of the new ice pillar, looking down at Shoto. He was standing now, his hair disheveled, a small trail of blood running from the corner of his mouth. His gray and blue eyes were fixed on her with a new, burning intensity.

"Damn," Riko said, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead and giving him a cheeky salute. "I knew it was too easy to stop someone like you. You're a stubborn one, aren't you, Shoto-kun?"

Shoto didn't answer with words. He threw his arm forward, sending a barrage of ice spears toward her.

"Momo! cover!" Riko yelled.

As Momo moved to cover behind the bomb, Riko reached into her utility belt. She pulled out three small, metallic pellets, the "Rex Splode" specials she had spent weeks perfecting with the Support Lab.

"Let's see how your ice handles some concentrated kinetic friction!"

Riko hurled the pellets. They hit the incoming ice spears mid-air.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The pellets didn't just explode; they acted like shaped charges, boring through the ice and sending a shower of freezing shrapnel back toward Shoto.

Riko landed back on the floor, her breath hitching slightly. The cold was starting to seep into her bones, and she could feel the familiar, nagging ache in her chest.
