By the third time the call went unanswered, I stopped pretending it didn't bother me.
The screen dimmed in my hand, the faint glow disappearing like it had nothing left to offer. No response. No message. Just silence stretching longer than it should have.
I checked the time again.
Too late for it to mean nothing.
Too quiet for it to be coincidence.
I let out a breath as I stepped away from the window, pacing once across the room before stopping again. Something about the house felt off but enough to keep my instincts from settling. Like something had already shifted, and I was the last one catching on.
She knew better.
She knew exactly what kind of world she had stepped into the moment she agreed to this.
And still—she went to see him without letting me know.
