Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 Henry Dukas

"Henry Ducard?"

Lex stopped short.

The name hung in the air like a match hovering over gasoline.

Barbara nodded, breathing slightly hard from the sprint. "I only caught a glimpse. Tall. Lean. Dark coat. The way he moved—controlled. Efficient."

John frowned. "You know him?"

Barbara hesitated. "Not personally. But Dad mentioned him once. A private investigator. Used to consult on high-level cases. Then he disappeared."

Selena stepped up behind them, silent as ever. "Disappeared people don't usually break into Arkham during a zombie outbreak for sightseeing."

Lex's eyes narrowed toward the far end of the corridor.

Henry Ducard.

In another timeline, another life, that name would mean something else entirely.

But right now?

It meant someone highly trained. Possibly armed. Definitely dangerous.

And definitely not infected.

"Which way?" Lex asked.

Barbara pointed down the east hallway. "He cut through there."

The building above them creaked ominously. Smoke from the lower levels was beginning to seep upward in faint gray threads.

John shifted his grip on the kukri. "We shouldn't split up again."

"No," Lex agreed. "We move together."

They advanced cautiously.

The upper level of Arkham was darker, power flickering in uneven pulses. Emergency lights blinked red along the walls, casting long shadows that made every doorway look like a waiting mouth.

Lex extended his awareness—just slightly.

The vines creeping through cracks in the walls responded faintly to his presence now. Not fully obedient, not yet—but aware.

Like distant fingers twitching.

Selena noticed.

Her gaze slid toward him, sharp and unreadable.

He ignored it.

They reached a junction.

A door at the end of the hall swung slowly on a broken hinge.

Fresh scuff marks lined the floor.

"He went through there," John whispered.

Barbara adjusted her glasses. "That's the old psychiatric records wing."

Lex exhaled slowly.

Of course it is.

They pushed inside.

Rows of metal filing cabinets stood in crooked lines. Papers were scattered everywhere—patient files, evaluations, psychological profiles—trampled and torn.

At the center of the room stood a single overturned chair.

Still rocking.

They were close.

A faint sound echoed from the back stairwell.

Footsteps.

Measured.

Not running.

Walking.

"He wants us to follow," Selena murmured.

Lex agreed.

This wasn't panic.

This was invitation.

"Stay sharp," he said quietly.

They moved toward the stairwell.

Halfway there—

A shape dropped from above.

Fast.

Silent.

John barely had time to react before a boot connected with his wrist, sending the kukri clattering across the floor.

Barbara shouted.

Selena lunged.

The man moved like flowing water—sidestepping Selena's strike, redirecting her momentum with minimal effort.

Lex stepped in.

The stranger's eyes met his.

Calm. Assessing. Intelligent.

Not infected.

Not panicked.

Trained.

The man pivoted and drove a palm strike toward Lex's chest.

Lex didn't block.

He absorbed.

His enhanced durability took the impact with minimal effect—but the force behind it was impressive.

Very impressive.

Lex countered with a swift elbow aimed at the man's jaw.

The stranger leaned back just enough to let it skim past, then twisted, attempting to hook Lex's leg out from under him.

Lex adjusted his stance mid-motion.

System-assisted reflexes kicked in.

He caught the man's wrist.

For a split second, they were locked.

Strength against technique.

The stranger's eyes flickered—recognition.

You're not normal.

Lex smirked slightly.

Neither are you.

Selena re-entered the fray, forcing the man to disengage.

He flipped backward, landing lightly atop a filing cabinet.

Balanced.

Unbothered.

John retrieved his kukri and stood ready, breathing hard.

Barbara raised her pistol but didn't fire.

The man looked at each of them in turn.

Then his gaze settled on Lex.

"You're new," he said calmly.

His voice was low. Controlled. Educated.

Lex tilted his head. "And you're trespassing."

A faint hint of amusement touched the man's expression.

"This city is dying," he replied. "Ownership feels… irrelevant."

"Start talking," Selena snapped. "Who are you?"

The man stepped down from the cabinet.

"Henry Ducard."

No hesitation.

No deception.

Barbara inhaled sharply.

"It is you."

Ducard's eyes flicked toward her. "Commissioner Gordon's daughter."

"Former commissioner," Barbara corrected tightly.

Ducard inclined his head slightly.

"My condolences."

John shifted uneasily. "Why are you here?"

Ducard's gaze returned to Lex.

"I'm evaluating."

"Evaluating what?" Selena demanded.

"Survivors," Ducard said simply. "Capabilities. Potential."

Lex felt something cold settle in his chest.

Ah.

So that's the game.

Ducard's eyes sharpened slightly. "You killed Pamela Isley."

Not a question.

A statement.

Lex didn't flinch. "She was infected."

"She was compromised," Ducard corrected. "There's a difference."

"She tried to mind-control me," Lex replied flatly.

Ducard studied him for a long moment.

"And failed."

"Yes."

Silence stretched.

Smoke thickened slightly in the hallway behind them.

Finally, Ducard spoke again.

"This outbreak will not be solved with panic or sentiment. Gotham requires discipline. Structure. Strength."

His gaze swept across the group.

"You each possess fragments of that."

Selena scoffed. "If this is a recruitment pitch, work on it."

A faint ghost of a smile crossed Ducard's face.

"Perhaps later."

John tightened his grip. "You still haven't answered why you're here."

Ducard turned slightly toward the broken window at the far end of the room. Moonlight cut across his profile.

"There are forces at work beyond infection," he said quietly. "This is not random."

Lex's eyes narrowed.

He already suspected as much.

The virus was too targeted. Too convenient.

Ducard continued, "Arkham housed minds capable of engineering catastrophe. Some of them are no longer contained."

Barbara's voice dropped. "You think someone caused this?"

"I know someone did."

The room went still.

Selena crossed her arms. "And you're hunting them."

"Yes."

Lex considered him carefully.

Ducard wasn't lying.

But he wasn't revealing everything either.

Classic.

"Why tell us?" Lex asked.

"Because," Ducard replied, "you're already involved."

His eyes locked onto Lex again.

"Especially you."

A beat passed.

Then distant gunfire echoed from somewhere outside the building.

More infected.

More chaos.

Ducard stepped backward toward the window.

"This city will devour the weak," he said calmly. "Decide which you intend to be."

Before anyone could react, he turned and leapt through the shattered window.

Selena rushed forward.

By the time they reached the edge, he was already gone—vanished into the maze of alleyways below like smoke.

John exhaled slowly. "I don't like that guy."

Barbara lowered her pistol. "He knew about Ivy."

"He knew about all of us," Selena added.

Lex stared into the darkness where Ducard had disappeared.

Evaluating survivors.

For what?

A new order?

A purge?

Something worse?

The system interface flickered faintly in the corner of his vision—as if reacting to something unseen.

A new variable entering the board.

Lex turned back to the group.

"Whatever he's planning," he said quietly, "we stay ahead of it."

Selena studied him. "You think he's a threat?"

Lex's expression hardened.

"I think he's not the kind of man who loses."

Barbara adjusted the strap on her bag. "Then we'd better not either."

Smoke was getting heavier now.

The building wouldn't hold much longer.

"Time to move," John said.

They headed for the fire escape.

As they descended into the cold Gotham night once more, Lex felt the faint pulse of vines along the brick walls respond to him again.

Stronger this time.

More obedient.

Poison Ivy's power was settling in.

And somewhere in the shadows of the city—

Henry Ducard was watching.

The game wasn't just escalating.

It was evolving.
