Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Threads Of Fate.

**What The Flip!? — Under The Same Roof**

Birds chirp merrily as the first rays of dawn paint the sky in soft hues of pink and gold, chasing away the last shadows of night.

Crows caw from distant treetops, their sharp calls echoing across the vast blue expanse dotted with fluffy, cotton-like clouds drifting lazily overhead.

A soft breeze rustles through the leaves of cherry blossom trees, carrying the fresh, crisp scent of morning dew-kissed earth and blooming jasmine from the neighborhood gardens below.

In this serene suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of Tokyo, where modern homes blend with quiet tradition, life unfolds gently and predictably—this is the beginning of a story about unbreakable bonds forged in joy, the cruel whims of fate, and the fragile threads that weave family together, sometimes in the unlikeliest and most heartbreaking of ways.

**Tenjou Household, Evening – One Fateful Night**

The warm, golden glow of the dining room lamp bathed the polished wooden table in a cozy amber light, casting long, playful shadows across the walls adorned with framed family photos capturing smiles from vacations and birthdays past.

The faint, rhythmic hum of the ceiling fan stirred the humid summer air, mingling with the gentle clinking of spoons against ceramic bowls and the savory aroma of steamed rice and simmered vegetables.

Mrs. Tenjou, a kind-faced woman in her late thirties with soft brown hair tied in a loose bun, patiently spooned mashed carrots and potatoes into her three-year-old son Kai's eager, open mouth.

Kai, with his tousled dark brown hair sticking up in every direction and sparkling blue eyes full of wonder, kicked his little legs excitedly under the table, barely containing his boundless energy.

Ayaka peeked shyly in from the doorway, her black hair styled in cute pigtails that bounced as she tilted her head, framing her gentle gray eyes that always seemed too wise for her five years.

At five years old, she already adored her little cousin Kai during their frequent family gatherings, often sneaking him extra treats when no one was looking.

Mrs. Tenjou smiled gently, wiping a smudge of orange mush from Kai's chubby cheek with a napkin.

"Sweetie, eat properly, okay? Tomorrow, we finally have a trip—after so long, our whole family is going on a trip together! The zoo with all the animals, the park for picnic... it'll be *perfect*."

Kai's eyes widened like saucers, his adorable face lighting up with pure, unfiltered joy.

"Yes, Mom… I'm *really* excited!!"

He bounced so hard in his high chair that his bowl wobbled dangerously close to toppling over.

Then, with a mischievous grin that revealed his tiny milk teeth, he added dramatically,

"Mom… I want to see dinosaurs, rawrrr!"

He waved his chubby arms wildly like ferocious claws, complete with sound effects, eliciting a chorus of giggles from everyone in the room.

Ayaka clapped her small hands together, giggling uncontrollably.

"Kai… you're *always* thinking about dinosaurs, huh? What if they think *you're* a tasty little snack?"

Kai giggled even harder, pointing a sticky finger right at her.

"Ayaka!! Come see with me tomorrow!! We'll roar together! Rawr rawr!"

Mr. Tenjou, Ayaka's uncle—a tall, broad-shouldered man with a warm laugh and calloused hands from his job as a mechanic—kneeled down beside Kai, ruffling his hair affectionately with a big, gentle hand.

"You two are always so full of energy. Tomorrow will be a fun day… promise me you'll behave in the car, alright? No dinosaur roars while Dad's driving, okay?"

"Yes, Dad!! I'll behave!! Promise!"

Kai saluted dramatically with his tiny fist, his voice piping high and earnest.

Mrs. Tenjou chuckled warmly, shaking her head.

"Alright, finish your dinner quickly so we can get to bed early. Big day tomorrow!"

Kai's innocence shone through as he pleaded, wide-eyed and hopeful.

"Mom… can we go see the dinosaurs first? Please?? Pretty please?"

Ayaka giggled quietly from the doorway, her heart swelling at his pure, untainted joy.

"Kai… you're going to get so tired running around the zoo all day. But okay, we'll make it the first stop. Deal?"

"But I want to see them *all*! Roar!"

Kai demonstrated one final massive roar, arms flailing, and the room erupted in hearty, loving laughter.

In that precious moment, the Tenjou household felt completely invincible, a warm bubble shielding them from the world's harsh uncertainties.

**Next Morning – Kai's Bedroom**

Golden sunlight filtered through the thin curtains, painting bright stripes across Kai's dinosaur-themed bedsheets covered in roaring T-Rex patterns.

Mrs. Tenjou shook him awake gently, her voice cheerful and melodic.

"Kai? Wake up~ The big adventure awaits us today!"

Kai mumbled sleepily, rubbing his eyes with tiny fists.

"Mom… we are going on a t… uh… tipp… uh… t-twir… uhhhh… TRIP… yeah, trip..today… Right?? ...yayyyyyyy!"

He bolted upright like a rocket, his sleepy haze vanishing as pure energy ignited within him.

Ayaka appeared at the doorway, her hair slightly tousled from sleep, wearing a simple sundress with flower patterns.

"Kai… hurry up, or we'll be late! I packed your favorite snacks—chocolate crackers and apple juice."

Kai jumped from the bed in a whirlwind flurry—brushing his hair haphazardly with his fingers, bathing in record time under his mother's supervision, and wriggling into his outfit: a bright t-shirt with a roaring T-Rex and tiny cargo shorts perfect for adventures.

Downstairs, the family devoured a hearty breakfast of steaming rice, rich miso soup, grilled fish, and fresh sliced fruits.

Laughter filled the cozy kitchen as Mr. Tenjou recounted silly zoo stories from his own childhood, complete with exaggerated animal impressions.

Afterward, both the Tenjou and Ishida families packed their bags meticulously, double-checking sunscreen, hats, and water bottles.

Kai's small backpack bulged awkwardly with juice boxes, crackers, and his most cherished toy dinosaur, "Rexy," clutched tightly in his hand.

Ayaka gently patted his head, her touch sisterly and protective.

"Be careful, Kai. Let's have fun together. Stick close—no running off after 'wild beasts,' okay?"

They waved goodbye enthusiastically as the families piled into their separate cars, the Ishidas trailing just behind in their silver minivan.

Soft J-pop tunes played in the Tenjou car, Kai bouncing excitedly in his car seat.

"Dad, will there be lions? Elephants? *Real* dinosaurs? Can we feed the giraffes?"

Mr. Tenjou chuckled deeply, promising all sorts of wonders through the rearview mirror.

In the following car, Ayaka chatted lightly with her parents about school—her upcoming exams and dreams of becoming a veterinarian to help all the zoo animals—while glancing out at the passing scenery, the warm wind tousling her hair through the cracked window.

**Supermarket Stop – Lighthearted Detour**

The Tenjous pulled into a bustling supermarket first, the parking lot alive with weekend shoppers pushing carts.

Kai raced through the bright aisles like a tiny tornado, pointing excitedly at every colorful package.

"Mom! Gummy bears for the dinosaurs? And chocolate milk! And cookies!"

Mrs. Tenjou laughed heartily, tossing items into the cart while Mr. Tenjou handled the heavier bags of water bottles and snack boxes.

Playful banter ensued: Kai "helped" by stacking candy bars into dangerously wobbly towers, only for Ayaka—joining briefly from the other car—to steady them with a grin.

"You're building a candy castle, not a snack pile, Kai!"

Small jokes, hugs, and laughter filled the air—a perfect snapshot of family joy.

They loaded up and drove off, spirits higher than ever.

The Ishidas arrived shortly after, picking up forgotten items like extra sunscreen and wet wipes.

Ayaka kept a gentle hand on Kai's shoulder during their quick overlap, whispering conspiratorially,

"Save some energy for the real animals, okay?"

**The Road – Choice Of Fate**

The open road stretched endlessly ahead, flanked by rolling green hills and distant mountains under a clear blue sky.

The Tenjou car hummed along peacefully until sudden horror struck without warning.

A massive truck ahead swerved wildly—brakes failing in a deafening, ear-piercing screech.

It collided with multiple vehicles in a catastrophic symphony of screams, twisting metal, and shattering glass exploding everywhere.

The Tenjou car spun violently into the chaos, the world blurring into a nightmarish haze.

Ayaka's family rushed forward through the smoking wreckage, hearts pounding in terror.

They found Kai—small, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, barely conscious—clutched protectively in his mother's lifeless arms.

Ayaka scooped him up immediately, hugging him tightly to her chest as hot tears streamed down her face.

Mr. and Mrs. Ishida grimly carried Mr. Tenjou and Mrs. Tenjou's bodies to their car.

*Ayaka (Between choked sobs) *

"Kai! Hold on... please... *please* hold on..."

**Hospital Waiting Area – Agonizing Vigil**

The sterile hospital corridors echoed with muffled sobs and distant beeps.

Kai was rushed into the emergency treatment room, machines beeping frantically behind closed doors.

Ayaka and her parents—Mr. and Mrs. Ishida, both pale with shock—sat on a hard plastic bench for what felt like eternity.

Ayaka cried quietly, clutching her hands tightly, replaying the morning's laughter over and over in her shattered mind.

Her mother stroked her hair soothingly, whispering comforts, while her father stared blankly at the floor, fists clenched white-knuckled.

Hours dragged on like endless torture.

Finally, the doctor emerged, his face etched with deep solemnity.

"I'm very sorry… your family members… did not survive the accident."

Ayaka froze completely, a violent tremor ripping through her small body.

"Uncle... Auntie.. Kai..?"

The words hung heavy in the air, utterly unreal and crushing.

The doctor continued softly, eyes downcast, "The child… is alive. But his condition is critical. Only a very small chance of survival."

Mrs. Ishida's voice trembled badly.

"Can we… see him now?"

"Not yet… he must be stabilized first. Please wait here."

Night fell slowly, the waiting room becoming a tomb of suffocating tension.

When the doctor returned hours later, a flicker of hope appeared.

"His condition is stable enough now. You may see him."

They rushed inside desperately.

Kai lay so fragile on the bed, IV lines snaking from his tiny arms, a thick bandage covering his forehead wound.

Ayaka stood beside him, tears falling silently onto the bedsheets.

"Kai… it's okay… I won't let anything happen to you… I promise…"

Her parents exchanged sorrowful glances behind her.

Ayaka turned to them, pleading through choking sobs.

"Please… let him stay with us… I'll take care of him… He has no one else left!"

Mr. Ishida exhaled slowly, his voice steady with grim determination.

"He's my brother's son… he won't be alone. We'll adopt him officially."

Mrs. Ishida pulled Ayaka into a tight, comforting embrace as she finally broke down completely.

"We'll keep him. Kai will stay with us. He's family now."

**Timeskip – Ishida Household, 13 Years Later**

**Evening – Ayaka's Room**

The Ishida home buzzed with comfortable, lived-in familiarity. Kai, now 16,165 cm tall, with light brown hair falling messily over piercing blue eyes and a sharp, cute face, sat cross-legged on Ayaka's bedroom floor surrounded by scattered manga volumes.

Ayaka, 17 and turning 18 tomorrow,160 cm tall, lounged beside him on her soft pink bedspread, her curvy figure relaxed in a loose pastel t-shirt and comfy shorts, black shiny hair spilling freely over her shoulders. Her gray eyes sparkled with competitive fire as they battled intensely in a co-op fighting game on her console.

"Ha! Got you with the uppercut combo!" Kai cheered triumphantly, landing a perfect sequence that made Ayaka's character stagger dramatically on screen.

Ayaka pouted cutely, cheeks tinting pink with mock frustration. "N-No fair, Kai! You mashed buttons again like always!"

She leaned closer instinctively, their shoulders brushed–both jerked their hands away instinctively as both turns red, specially Ayaka, she turned into a tomato, controller vibrations humming between their tense grips. The room smelled faintly of strawberry shampoo from her hair and empty instant ramen bowls from their snack break earlier.

Kai grinned shyly, hyper-aware of her proximity and soft warmth. "Rematch? Loser does dishes tonight *and* tomorrow."

"You're *on*," Ayaka declared fiercely, eyes narrowing in adorable determination as she cracked her knuckles.

**Dinner Time – Family Table**

"Mom! Dinner's ready yet?" Ayaka called out as victory cheers faded from the TV speakers.

Mrs. Ishida's cheerful voice echoed up from downstairs. "Yes! Come eat before the fish gets cold—everything's on the table!"

They scrambled down the stairs together, controllers abandoned mid-game. The dining table overflowed with steaming white rice, perfectly grilled mackerel, rich miso soup, pickled vegetables, and fresh salad. Mr. Ishida already served generous portions, his newspaper folded neatly aside.

"So, how's school treating you both?" Mrs. Ishida asked warmly, passing the soy sauce bottle to Kai.

Ayaka blushed lightly, poking at her rice with chopsticks. "Exams were *super* tough last week, but I got top marks in biology and chemistry. Vet school applications start next month... I'm kinda nervous but excited."

Mr. Ishida nodded proudly, sipping his tea. "That's my girl. Always aiming high. Kai, how about you? Art club still dominating?"

Kai (who's really good at art) swallowed his bite of fish, shy under the family spotlight. "Yeah, team's doing good—we won the regional quarterfinals; teacher wants my new dinosaur evolution sketch for the school exhibit next month."

Mrs. Ishida beamed at them both. "You two are so talented in completely different ways. Ayaka, any big birthday plans for tomorrow besides family?"

Ayaka glanced sideways at Kai, her face heating up noticeably. "J-just family dinner... maybe strawberry shortcake? Nothing fancy."

Kai mumbled around his rice, cheeks warm too. "I'll bake something *real* good tomorrow. Practice makes perfect, right?"

Mr. Ishida chuckled deeply. "Look at you two—practically adults now. Time flies when you're raising fighters and artists."

Laughter filled the room again, easy and genuine, washing away the day's stresses.

**That Night – Hallway Whisper**

Later that night, with the house finally quiet and settled, Kai knocked softly on Ayaka's bedroom doorframe. Stars twinkled brightly outside her window.

Ayaka looked up from her desk where she was organizing study notes, cheeks already flushing at the sight of him. "Kai? Can't sleep either?"

He stepped just inside the doorway, voice hushed and soft. "…It's tomorrow, you know."

Ayaka blushed deeper, nervously stirring her cup of cold chamomile tea. "Y-yeah… Can't believe I'm almost an adult. Feels unreal."

Kai's blue eyes lingered on her face a beat too long, something unspoken flickering there. "So… happy birthday in advance, Onee-sama."

Ayaka's heart skipped wildly, her face burning a deep crimson as she ducked her head. "Th-thank you… Kai. You've grown *so* much these past years. *Really* grown."

"Good night," he said quietly, turning away with his own cheeks faintly warm, heart fluttering oddly.

"G-good night…" Ayaka whispered to his retreating back, fingers twisting nervously in her long black hair.

Lights dimmed one by one. Two cousins slept under the same roof, bound by fate, family, and something deeper awakening—their story just truly beginning.
