Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: Ghost Rider’s Head Is a Little Green

Beep, beep.

Steve Rogers answered the phone. It was Maria Hill's voice on the other end.

"Dear, something unusual has happened on 13th Street in Long Island. If you have time, please check it out."

As her husband and partner, Hill knew Steve's character too well.

Perhaps because of his passionate spirit during World War II — which had simply gone dormant for seventy years — he now seemed out of tune with the modern world.

Apart from being devoted to his family and to… "exercising" with her, he hardly cared about his work.

As for the massive Hydra branch that S.H.I.E.L.D. had absorbed, he had simply left it in Sharon's and Hill's hands while he focused on slacking off.

"If anyone else asked, I'd say I'm busy. But since it's you, I'm free no matter what," Steve replied with a smile.

Still, he was curious. The scene sounded a lot like the Ghost Rider's doing. Maybe he could even meet the rumored Nicolas Cage?

Hill chuckled softly. "Hehe, don't tease me. Be careful, okay? I'll be waiting for you tonight — I bought a few bikinis you like."

Her voice was full of seductive charm, enough to make it difficult for any man to stay rational. Steve almost wanted to drop everything and show her what an "electric motor pile driver" really meant.

Mystique, who overheard part of the call, looked a little stunned. She hadn't expected Captain America to be that kind of man.

"Steve, you're not who I thought you were," she said, half amused, half disillusioned.

"Yes — old-fashioned, responsible, selfless, leading by example, willing to sacrifice for others. That's what politicians love to see."

Steve's voice grew quieter. "But I just want to be myself, you know? Before the war, I promised a girl we'd dance together afterward. I was seventy years late."

His tone carried self-deprecation, pain, and confusion about his new life.

Mystique's expression softened. Moved by his sincerity, she felt a pang of guilt and gently hugged him, hoping to offer some comfort.

"I'm sorry, Steve. I didn't know you'd gone through so much."

"It's alright," he said quietly. "Duty always calls. Maybe one day I can stop being 'Captain' and just live as Steve Rogers. Honestly, I envy Tony and Charles — they do what they want. Me? I can't."

He smiled, handing Mystique his card with his number on it.

Let Mystique go? Not a chance. Marrying a shapeshifter like her meant she could change her appearance every day — a new bride every night.

Now that was exciting.

As for world peace and fighting crime — that was Captain America's job. What did it have to do with Steve Rogers?

At the bar, Tony Stark's eyes flickered as he listened. He actually felt a bit touched.

His arrogance and genius had left him with few real friends, but maybe Steve could be one. After all, his father Howard had been close to him. Besides, Steve didn't seem like some uptight fossil — he was vibrant and interesting.

"Jarvis, bring the car around. Let's go check it out," Tony ordered.

"Of course, sir. The sports car is ready at the gate," Jarvis replied.

Charles Xavier, reading Tony's thoughts, smiled faintly. The commotion outside was clearly something — or someone — unusual.

And honestly, the bar had become boring. How was he supposed to pick up girls in this mess?

Turning to Mystique, he said, "Raven, let's sneak over and take a look. It might be interesting."

"Isn't that… not a good idea?" she asked, hesitating — though her mind was still on Steve's emotional honesty.

The thought of his seventy-year slumber and his lost love tugged at her heart. She wished she could comfort him — maybe even with her "soft bread of empathy."

Yes, she knew how to play this game well.

Even an old driver would give Steve a thumbs up for this smooth move.

Not far away, the White Queen, Emma Frost, watched them. Her eyes flickered — worried Steve might expose her mutant identity. Having powers wasn't exactly fashionable these days.

Her phone suddenly rang. She pressed the answer button with a slender white finger.

"Hey Emma, how have you been?" came a woman's elegant voice.

"I'm fine, Danica. What made you think of calling me?" Emma asked curiously. They weren't close — more business acquaintances than friends.

"I have a business proposal. If you're free, I'll send someone to pick you up."

"Alright. I'll wait for you at the Earl's Mansion."

After ending the call, Emma frowned slightly. Danica wasn't human — she was a vampire.

Their relationship existed because they were both… different. But Danica wasn't someone to underestimate. Surrounded by fawning men, she was the definition of a femme fatale.

The South Pier, Long Island

Ghost Rider — Johnny Blaze — had tracked the Wind Demon to the docks. But before he could stop his motorcycle, he was sent flying by a massive earthen fist.

Not long ago, he'd met the old man he once made a deal with — the one who saved his father from terminal cancer.

The next day, his father, miraculously cured, performed a dangerous stunt… only to die in a horrific accident.

(As in the movie Ghost Rider.)

From that day on, Johnny was cursed — or blessed — with the power of the Spirit of Vengeance. He ran from everything, terrified of what he'd become.

Recently, that same devilish old man had appeared again, asking Johnny to retrieve a contract to use against his own son. When Johnny asked why he couldn't do it himself, a flicker of fear crossed the demon's face.

Clearly, there were beings in this world that even he feared.

And besides — if he couldn't even manage his own affairs, what kind of "Lord of Hell" was he? If other demons found out, they'd mock him for eternity.

Johnny had no choice but to obey. He couldn't defeat the old demon anyway.

But his first real fight didn't go well. The Wind Demon crushed him easily, slamming him into the dirt with no chance to retaliate.

Later, Steve reported the situation to Hill and Sharon, explaining Ghost Rider's characteristics and the kind of supernatural opponents they might be facing.

For the first time, they heard about actual demons from Hell — and instead of fear, both women were filled with curiosity.

"Honey, you're not going to bring home a female demon, are you?" Sharon teased suspiciously.

Only she and Hill knew the truth — if no one helped Steve share the "firepower," they would be the ones suffering.

Sometimes working too hard wasn't good. Even the strongest ox needed to rest — and the fertile fields too!

"What nonsense are you talking about? I have no interest in demons!" Steve retorted.

But before he could finish, he spotted a figure with long green hair disappearing into a shipping container.

That silhouette looked very familiar…

Wait a second — that wasn't a demon.

That was a human woman.

A stunning, cool, jade-skinned beauty.
