Chapter 1 - An average life

Lex tapped frequently on the buttons, his eyes pale red , absolutely lost in the application form.

His gaze shifted to the coffee cup that was laid beside the laptop. He grabbed the handle, taking a sip, then used the opportunity to stare at the other empty seats in the open office.

He was the only one left there; he'd meant to have left work over an hour ago, but thought to stay a while since he had absolutely nothing important to do back in his apartment.

Even in his mid-twenties, Lex could be said to be the perfect definition of an average human. He stared at the coffee cup – it was empty. He had to refill it now, he thought to himself.

He stood, walking towards the coffee machine, using the controller to pour more of the averagely tasty liquid into the cup.

As the coffee was being refilled, Lex peered at the television attached to the wall, not so distant from where he stood.

The news channel was on. He grinned as he glanced at the female news caster's slightly revealing curves.

She was ranting on and on about a rogue system virus that had been recently released on the internet, urging all computer and system users to watch out for the deadly application.

Lex was still lost, daydreaming about grabbing the huge curves, when the coffee, now totally full, spilled all over his plain shoes.

Lex snapped out of his reverie, turning off the coffee machine. He stared towards the CCTV camera that was just above him; the boss was going to take a cut out of his meager paycheck when he found out.

"Ahhhh, just another boring day," Lex sighed, stepping out of the office building into the walkway while shutting the door behind him.

His gaze fell on the evening sun, which dimly peered above the horizon, wishing it goodbyes, slowly giving way to the sky's queen.

Lex was the epitome of an average-looking guy, even at a young age, clutching his brown and black lined leather briefcase.

His face was unremarkable, as he was not handsome in any way and certainly not ugly. He then made his way to the subway station not too far from the office building.

A few minutes later, he found himself in the train, watching as the world outside disappeared into streaks of lights and colors.

With a practiced motion, he pulled out his phone from his pocket, attaching his earpods to his ears. He scrolled on his favorite music app and played a track.

At that moment, he felt lost in another world as inspiration for the episode in his latest manga began rushing into his mind.

He was an artist who wrote only for the fun of it, and as something to spice up his average life.

The train jolted to a stop; various individuals rushed in and out of the train. Lex joined in, disappearing into the crowd like an invisible shadow.

His shoulder brushed past other people who did not have the slightest idea he existed. His head was tilted downwards, savoring the soft music that played in his ears.

The sun had absolutely disappeared into the horizon, giving way to the bright moon, which shined brightly along with the sparkling stars surrounding it.

The neon-lit city was buzzing with life; people were finishing off their day, while some were just starting their adventures. Lex made his way through the seamless crowd like an invisible ghost.

After close to thirty minutes of walking on the sidewalks, he arrived at a residential building.

The building was slightly faded; three sparking street lamps stood still at its front, looking like they could blow up at any moment.

Lex strolled further into the building, going towards his apartment, not through an elevator but a hateful and unending set of stairs.

Having climbed the stairs and brushed past a couple of his neighbors, who absolutely were not aware of his presence, he arrived at his apartment entrance.

He brought out his bunch of keys, fishing out a particular one, then plunged the key into the keyhole, unlocking it.

He stepped inside the apartment, shutting the door behind him. He tapped on the switch on his side; the room immediately lit up.

The apartment was not too small or large; it was average, with a small bathroom, a kitchen on one side, and a compact living room. In the middle of the living room was a television and a pale-colored couch.

Laid on one side was also a table and chair; his trusty computer hung on the wall, beside it was a cabinet filled with various fantasy comics, manga, and action figures.

Lex heaved a sigh as he walked off towards his snug bed, taking off his outfit and heading to the bathroom to freshen up.

He then walked to the kitchen to cook a meal that would be enough to last him for the night. After thirty minutes of preparing it, he sank into his couch, turning on his favorite anime and catching up on the part he'd missed.

After a long while of bingeing the anime, he resorted to video games. He'd been grinding for days now, and he finally reached the next level. He played for a couple more hours, then proceeded to work on his latest fantasy and romance comic.

Grrrrrrr.

He held onto his stomach; he was hungry again. He walked towards the fridge, opening it. Inside the fridge were only a couple of eggs and fruits.

"Oh snap, I have to restock," he spoke, scratching his head. He checked the time; it was 10:00.

He could still make it to Mama Rina's rice and stakes just down the street and probably grab dessert and more supplies.

He hated the hassle of going back and forth for just a few supplies, but tomorrow was a Saturday, and he'll get to stay home all day. He made up his mind, grabbing his phone, keys, and wallet, and headed out the door.

As he left the scene, the screen on the computer flickered; various messages of virus contamination spammed it continuously.

It then turned off abruptly.
