Chapter 60 - The Quickening

The dress no longer fastened at the back.

She stood in front of the mirror on a Thursday morning, her fingers working at the clasp that had closed easily three weeks ago and now refused to meet its hook by approximately two inches. The pregnancy had announced itself overnight, the way she'd been warned it might, the gradual barely-there curve of the past weeks becoming something visible and definitive while she slept.

She let go of the clasp and looked at her reflection for a long moment. The change was undeniable. She was showing, properly and unmistakably, the kind of showing that would be noticed today by everyone who hadn't noticed it yesterday.
