[Literacy Arts: The Economics of Gaia]
An economy is the system by which a civilization manages Scarcity. While Mana is infinitely recycled and conserved in the atmosphere, the physical vessels that hold it land, labor, time, hundred-year herbs, monster cores, and mortal food are strictly finite. Because Cultivators and the Masses (mortals) have completely different biological needs and productive outputs, the economy of Gaia operates on a Two-Tier Split Circuit.
Currency & The Standard of Nyx
Unlike worlds that use paper money or ordinary mined ore, the currency of Gaia is backed by an immutable biological and energetic standard Nyx.
During the Golden Age, to prevent mages and alchemists from crashing markets by transmuting lead or stone into counterfeit wealth, Gold was established using the flesh and blood of Nyx. Under the laws of Mana, a cultivator cannot manifest an Aspect Bundle denser than their own cultivation realm. Furthermore, conjured materials suffer from Dilution their dense Mana bleeds into the thinner ambient Mana over time, causing fake metals to crumble into dust.
Because Nyx stands alone at the pinnacle of the Mortal World (Now Spirit Incarnation), her Mana density was seventeen thousand times higher than a Virtuoso's and fifty times higher than the Holy Mothers'. But now is 289,000,000 times higher than a Virtuoso and 2,500 times higher than the Holy Mothers'. Her gold possesses permanent Coherence. It never dilutes, cannot be replicated by any living being, and carries her unmistakable Mana signature.
Silver Pieces [The Mortal Circuit] - Ordinary mined silver alloyed with trace amounts of diluted Gold dust. It is used almost exclusively by the Masses and Awakening-stage individuals for daily survival buying tavern drinks, mortal clothing, livestock, and basic tools. 10 Silver Pieces = 1 Gold Piece.
Impure / Lower-Quality Gold Pieces [The Common Cultivator Circuit]- Gold that has been melted down and stretched with mundane metals by Imperial Mints to increase the money supply (M) for growing populations. While its Mana signature is weaker, it still holds Nyx's permanent Coherence. 1 Gold Piece can buy a month of healthy food for a mortal, while 3 to 50 Gold Pieces cover basic mage staffs, Wyvern meat, or a Middle-District house.
Pure Gold Pieces [The Noble & Sect Circuit] - Unadulterated Golden Age coinage used in Auction Houses, the Alchemy Association, and high-level trade. Used to purchase Foundation-to-Virtuoso pills and hundred-year herbs (ranging from 30 to 500+ Gold Pieces).
Gold Bars [The Strategic & Sovereign Circuit] - Solid, unalloyed ingots of Nyx's crystallized flesh and blood. Because these bars radiate dense, pure Mana, they are used for inter-empire trade, funding wars, buying Soul Formation+ resources, and incubating Dragon eggs. 1 Gold Bar = 100 Pure Gold Pieces (or 1,000 Silver Pieces).
Macroeconomic Laws of Gaia
In a normal economy, if a tiny class of superhumans walked around with thousands of Gold Coins, the price of bread would skyrocket until peasants starved (Demand-Pull Inflation). Gaia avoids this because Cultivators exit the mortal consumption pool as they ascend.
Once a cultivator reaches Soul Formation (or uses specialized biology like Caelus's photosynthesis), they no longer need mortal food, wool coats, or mundane medicine.
Cultivators spend their Gold almost exclusively on high-density Mana goods (pills, furnaces, talismans, spatial rings). Thus, Gold circulates strictly among Alchemists, Sects, and Nobles, while Silver circulates among farmers, bakers, and craftsmen.
Opportunity Cost
A Soul Formation cultivator could plow a thousand acres of farmland in ten minutes using Mana. However, every hour a high-realm cultivator spends doing mortal labor is an hour lost stabilizing their core, comprehending aspects, or clearing Rifts. Because the Opportunity Cost of a cultivator's time is astronomical, mundane labor is left to the Masses and Awakening-realm workers, keeping mortal wages stable.
Empires
The Holy Tianyun Empire
Under a Modern Description, this would fall under [Agrarian Theocracy].
The Economic Model is Feudal mercantilism & State Regulated Welfare.
Their Primary Exports are Grain, Livestock, Alchemical Herbs and purified Defensive Talismans.
The Structure - The Empire is the agricultural breadbasket of the region, protected by massive city-wide thermoregulating Mana barriers maintained by the Holy Mothers. Because these barriers allow crops to grow and citizens to survive harsh winters, the Church extracts heavy tithes and strictly regulates who is allowed to cultivate. The Masses are barred from cultivating past Awakening unless they join the Military, Royal Guard, or Church, ensuring a permanent agricultural workforce.
The Crimson Moon Empire
The Empire is a Predatory War Economy
Their Economic Model is Extraction Based Slave Economy & Matriarchal Treasury.
Their Primary Exports are Mined Ores, Monster Materials, and Mercenary/Assassination Contracts.
The Structure - By tradition, only women are permitted to manage currency, banking, and macro-logistics, as finance is viewed as an extension of esoteric magic. Labor, however, is built on conquest, in which anyone defeated by their clans becomes unpaid property.
The Marou Dynasty
The Empire Falls under Industrial Meritocracy.
The Economic Model is Open Market Capitalism & More for Technological Innovation.
Primary Exports are Mass Produced Weaponry, Refined Metals, Infrastructure materials (Asphalt/Concrete) and Tournament Tourism
The Structure - Free from Church dogma, the Marou Dynasty invests heavily in public infrastructure and secular commerce. By hosting the Grand Tournament every fifty years, open to all species and non-criminals, they attract thousands of Virtuoso and Soul Formation cultivators from across the continent, generating massive revenue through lodging, betting, auction taxes, and trade tariffs.
