Even without Amabel, his love for Philippa was already compromised. That woman only loves herself and was probably with him from the beginning because of what he could give to her. She took advantage of his love for her; how blind he was when he was around her and thought that he would remain like that not knowing that everything has a time to reach an end.
And when he heard her talking about ruining all of them, his heart even turned cold. He wronged her, he knows, but to think that she could actually talk about doing that out loud, it made him feel so cold that reality finally slapped him.
He needed to be extra careful. Not only for Amabel but for his family as well. He had always ben causing trouble for his family, and he didn't want something happening to them because of him.
