Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: One Face

"But the reality is that the Two-Face you know is the original me. That kind and upright Harvey Dent was actually a facade shaped by education. It's just that, at some point, I began to yearn for those traces of humanity from the depths of my heart."

Harvey's voice was calm, but there was a faint tremor hidden beneath it.

"I wanted to be a good person. I wanted to truly do something for Gotham. So the facade version of me began to suppress the real me in turn. It suppressed me for a very long time, so long that I can't even remember how many years passed, until Maroni threw that bottle of sulfuric acid at my face, and the darkness in my heart could no longer be contained."

As he spoke, memories surfaced one by one, like fragments of a past he had long refused to face.

Harvey began to recount his past.

His gaze slowly shifted, landing on the intact face of his former self floating in the air.

The contrast was almost cruel.

"Since things have come to this, you probably don't need to maintain that appearance anymore, Kaitou Kid. Although I've seen many strange things in Gotham, talking face-to-face with my own head is still a bit unsettling."

"It seems you're much smarter than Two-Face. At least you didn't believe I was a shadow born of your hallucinations."

"Harvey Dent" replied softly, his voice already shifting into Kaitou Kid's familiar tone.

He spun around swiftly.

Swoosh!

The vanished body reappeared without warning, as if it had never disappeared at all.

By the time he turned back, both his face and clothing had returned to Kaitou Kid's original appearance.

The white suit, the cape, the monocle, the confident smile.

Everything was back in its place.

"I have to thank you, Kaitou Kid. Your plan allowed me to see the light again."

Harvey spoke with a serious expression.

His words carried no sarcasm, no bitterness.

Only sincerity.

"Actually, I was just giving it a try. I didn't expect it to really work."

Kaitou Kid replied modestly, his tone relaxed.

"For some reason, seeing you makes my heart feel very calm. Even the Two-Face from just now… even me just now. You might not believe it, but that could already be called his kindest state."

Harvey paused briefly.

His gaze drifted downward, as if he were looking at something invisible.

"Perhaps because of that, I was finally able to return to this body after such a long time."

Hearing Harvey's words, Kaitou Kid fell into thought.

If he was not mistaken, this was likely inseparable from the effects of the Peace Aura.

The Peace Aura had reduced Two-Face's violent tendencies.

Although the reduction was limited due to Two-Face's deeply unstable mental state, to the point that Kaitou Kid had almost thought the Peace Aura was ineffective against supervillains, it had still produced subtle changes.

Now it seemed that, aside from slightly weakening Two-Face's evil side, it had also increased the weight of Harvey's kind side in his heart.

Finally, combined with the psychological tactics Kaitou Kid used while disguised as Harvey Dent, Two-Face's mind had been thrown into chaos, allowing Harvey's personality to gradually surface.

That was how the current situation came to be.

"Since Two-Face no longer exists, or at least will not be coming out for a while, my work here is basically finished. The moment for the final curtain call has arrived. It's time to say goodbye."

As he spoke, Kaitou Kid gave Harvey a faint smile.

The smile was light, almost casual, but it carried a trace of distance.

"By the way, Mr. Dent, you do not mind if I take a trophy, do you?"

"A trophy?" Harvey asked in confusion.

"Heeh~ This."

Kaitou Kid raised his right hand into a loose fist and lightly flicked his thumb against his index finger.

Ping.

A crisp metallic sound rang out as a silver coin sprang into the air from his hand.

As the coin fell, Kaitou Kid caught it casually, as if he had done so countless times before.

"That coin. I remember it should still be on me."

Harvey hurriedly searched his body in surprise.

He could not recall at all when Kaitou Kid had stolen the coin.

"When did you—"

His words came to an abrupt stop.

Harvey felt the coin.

So Kaitou Kid had not actually stolen it?

Was it just a joke?

"Take it out and have a look. I left you a gift in the place where I took the trophy."

Kaitou Kid's voice reached Harvey's ears.

With some doubt, Harvey pulled the coin from his person.

The size, weight, patterns on both sides, and even the year of minting were exactly the same as his original coin.

There was only one difference.

"This… this is?"

On the coin in Harvey's hand, both sides were completely clean and smooth, without a single scratch.

No scars.

No distortion.

Only a flawless surface.

"If you ever feel like relying on a coin to make decisions again, you might as well try this one. It will not be so easy to scratch up this time."

Kaitou Kid spoke with his back to Harvey.

His cape swayed slightly, catching the faint airflow in the hall.

"Wait, there is one more thing I've been wanting to ask you."

Seeing that Kaitou Kid was about to leave, Harvey asked the question he found most incomprehensible today.

"I want to know how you made the previous coin land on heads every single time."

Although the sight of Kaitou Kid's body becoming transparent and making Robin and the thirteen hostages disappear had seemed almost magical, from Harvey's perspective, he could at least imagine that it was related to the refraction of light.

Kaitou Kid had likely used some special material to distort the path of light, making it impossible for people inside and outside to see each other.

Even though Harvey had studied law rather than physics, it was not hard for him to make that connection.

But the fact that Two-Face obtained the same result every time he flipped the coin, even after checking it repeatedly, was something Harvey simply could not explain.

It completely defied probability.

Yet if it had been human manipulation, by what means had Kaitou Kid influenced Two-Face?

Mind control?

If Kaitou Kid possessed such an ability, he could have simply forced Harvey's personality to awaken.

It could not possibly be mere luck.

"Well, even if I do not tell you, you'll find out very soon."

Kaitou Kid gave a mysterious smile.

His monocle glinted faintly under the light.

"By my calculation, they should be arriving soon…"
