Chapter 24 - Chapter 23: The Rivalry Deepens

As Rudra's team basked in the glory of their first tournament victory, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The Future Star Academy had made a splash, but the real test was still ahead—the Karnataka State U-16 trials. And for that, Rudra knew, the competition was going to be brutal.

Among the many rivals, one stood out: Ankit Desai.

...

Ankit, the golden boy of Bangalore District, had been the top scorer in their previous match. His technique was flawless, his temperament calm under pressure, and his batting seemed almost mechanical—predictable, yet incredibly effective. He was Rudra's biggest challenge, and Rudra knew it.

After the tournament, Rudra had watched Ankit from a distance, studying him, analyzing his game with the precision he was now known for. Ankit's footwork was impeccable, his cover drive a textbook example of technique, and his ability to read the bowler's mind was something Rudra had only recently started developing himself.

Rudra could feel the intensity in the air whenever Ankit was around. In school, on the field, at the local academy—everywhere he turned, Ankit was there, a constant reminder that, no matter how far he'd come, there was still a gap he needed to bridge. And that gap was Ankit Desai.

The trials were just a few weeks away, and Rudra knew that to make it, he would need to push his limits.

The first step was improving his batting technique—he had started strong, but Ankit's clean, textbook style was always a level above.

Rudra's training sessions took on a new intensity. He increased his hours at the academy, pushing the limits of his [Batting - Technical] and [Reflexes]. Every session with the ball, every shot with the bat, Rudra could feel his improvement. But it was never enough. Ankit Desai was always a step ahead, his presence always lurking at the corner of Rudra's thoughts.

Meanwhile, the system was relentless in pushing him forward.

The trials began, and Rudra's first task was to bat. He watched as the bowlers ran in, their pace threatening, but Rudra had faced much worse. His mind raced—focusing not just on the ball, but on the field placements, the bowlers' cues, and even the opposition's body language. He had [Foresight], something that set him apart from most of his peers. As the first bowler delivered, Rudra's bat met the ball with a solid thud, sending it to the boundary for four.

But then, it was time for Ankit Desai to bat. Rudra watched him closely. Ankit's footwork was fluid, his balance perfect, and his shots pristine. He was the textbook definition of a cricketer. The pressure was mounting. If Rudra wanted to surpass him, he needed to perform beyond his limits.

As Ankit walked back to the dugout after an untroubled half-century, Rudra couldn't help but feel the weight of the rivalry. It was clear—this would be no easy task.

...

Major Rathore (Commentary):

"Ankit Desai has put in an exemplary performance here. If Rudra Sharma wants to make his mark, he'll have to come up with something extraordinary today."

...

As Rudra faced the bowlers again, he focused all his energy, channeling every bit of mental clarity and technique he had mastered over the past year. He wasn't just playing for himself anymore—he was playing for the academy, for the future, and for the rivalry that would define his career.

He pulled out the reverse scoop, a risky move, one that Major Rathore had mocked him for countless times, but it was the perfect shot to counter the bowler's length. The crowd gasped. It wasn't textbook cricket—but it was genius.

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"Kya shot hai! Reverse scoop! Yeh jo ladka kar raha hai, woh kisi naye era ka cricket hai! Yeh toh duniya ko dikhayega!"

(What a shot! A reverse scoop! What this boy is doing is cricket from a new era! He's going to show the world!)

...

The final ball of Rudra's innings came, and with it, the entire stadium seemed to hold its breath. He needed just three runs to secure his place in the U-16 squad. The bowler charged in. Time slowed as Rudra lined up his shot.

With a decisive crack, he drove the ball straight down the ground for a clean four. He had done it.
