The air inside the ancient, obsidian-sealed temple chamber was thick with the scent of dried blood and old magic. Massive stone pillars stretched into the darkness above, covered in faint, flickering runes.
Rudra stepped forward onto the polished stone floor, his heavy boots echoing through the hollow hall. Behind him, the massive obsidian gate remained locked tight, keeping the rest of the group safe from the horror waiting in the main sanctuary.
From the deepest shadow of the hall, a terrifying pressure exploded outward. The stone floor cracked beneath Rudra's feet, sending web-like fractures across the ground.
THUMP. THUMP.
A hulking figure, standing over ten feet tall, slowly emerged from the darkness. It was Hangar, a high-tier demon warrior. His skin was the color of bruised iron, covered in thick, bone-like armor plates. Four massive, curved horns sprouted from his skull, and his jaw split open to reveal rows of razor-sharp, jagged fangs dripping with acidic saliva. In his massive hands, Hangar swung a giant, double-headed battleaxe made of dark, cursed steel.
"A mortal... stepping into my sacred domain?" Hangar roared, his voice sounding like two grinding tectonic plates. "You smell of divine blood, little human. I will crush your ribs and feast on your soul!"
Rudra didn't flinch. He slowly drew his blade, channeling his inner spiritual aura until his weapon gleamed with a dense, crackling energy.
"You talk too much, demon," Rudra said, his voice cold and devoid of fear. "Let's see if your ax is sharper than your mouths
With a deafening battle cry, Hangar surged forward. Despite his massive size, the demon moved with terrifying speed, sweeping his giant battleaxe in a brutal horizontal arc meant to cleave Rudra in two.
CRASH!
Rudra leaped high into the air, dodging the swinging blade by inches as the axe shattered a massive stone pillar behind him, bringing a shower of debris falling from the ceiling.
While airborne, Rudra flipped forward, channeling his momentum into a downward vertical strike. His aura-infused sword slammed directly against Hangar's spiked shoulder armor!
CLANG!
Sparks flew in every direction, illuminating the dark hall. The raw force of Rudra's strike drove Hangar down onto one knee, cracking the stone beneath the demon's legs.
"Gah! Impudent worm!" Hangar snorted, dark purple blood oozing from a shallow cut on his shoulder.
Enraged, Hangar thrust his left palm forward, firing a point-blank blast of black demonic fire straight at Rudra's chest.
Rudra reacted instantly, crossing his arms and manifesting a protective spiritual barrier. The black flames slammed into the barrier, pushing Rudra backward across the smooth stone floor. Rudra dug his boots into the ground, skidding to a halt nearly thirty feet away, his arms smoking from the intense thermal heat.
"Is that all you've got?" Rudra scoffed, flicking the embers off his sleeves.
Hangar let out a guttural roar, charging again like an unstoppable battering ram. He unleashed a furious storm of axe swings—left, right, overhead, and thrusts. Rudra stood his ground, his sword becoming a blur of light as he parried every single blow.
CLANG! CLANG! BANG! CLANG!
The force of their clashing weapons sent sonic shockwaves ripping through the temple, blowing away the dust and rubble. Rudra matched the demon blow for blow, his tactical precision countering Hangar's brute physical strength.
Rudra spotted an opening in Hangar's wild attack pattern, sidestepping a heavy overhead chop and driving a violent kick directly into Hangar's gut, following up with a deep diagonal slash across the demon's torso!
Hangar staggered back, black blood spilling from the deep wound across his chest. He clutched his wound, his breathing coming in heavy, ragged gasps.
Hangar wiped the dark blood from his mouth, his crimson eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. He raised his massive battleaxe into the air, and the black runes on his body began to glow with a dark, unstable energy.
"I will tear this entire temple down to bury you!" Hangar growled, gathering every ounce of his demonic mana into a final, catastrophic attack.
Rudra narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip on his sword as he prepared to release his highest-tier technique to counter the demon's ultimate strike. The tension in the air was so dense it felt like it would snap.
WOOOOOM...
Suddenly, out of nowhere, an eerie, terrifying sound echoed through the entire subterranean complex.
It was not the sound of a human voice, nor was it the roar of any known beast. It was a low, unnatural, screeching howl—a sound that resonated directly inside the soul rather than the ears. It carried an ancient, primordial horror that made the very air freeze solid.
The moment the sound echoed through the hall, Hangar froze mid-attack.
The dark mana surrounding his battleaxe completely vanished, flickering out like a candle in a hurricane. The giant demon's eyes, which had been filled with rage just a second ago, instantly dilated with absolute, paralyzing horror.
Hangar's giant hands began to tremble violently, almost dropping his heavy battleaxe onto the floor. He slowly backed away from Rudra, his gaze darting frantically toward the dark, unseen depths of the inner temple corridors.
"N-No..." Hangar whimpered, his deep voice cracking in pure terror. "That... that entity... It's waking up?!"
Rudra held his sword in a defensive guard, observing the demon with sharp, watchful eyes. He could see cold sweat pouring down Hangar's iron-like skin. The ferocious demon warrior who had just tried to butcher him was now shaking like a terrified child.
"What's wrong, demon?" Rudra asked, his voice low and cautious. "What was that sound?"
Hangar didn't answer Rudra. He kept backing away, his boots dragging on the stone floor, his breathing shallow and panicked. He kept his eyes fixed on the dark hallway behind Rudra, terrified to even make a sudden movement.
CREAK...
The terrifying screeching sound echoed a second time, louder this time, shaking the very foundation of the temple and causing dust to rain down from the high ceiling.
Hangar fell back onto his hindquarters, holding his battleaxe in front of his chest not to fight Rudra, but as a desperate shield against whatever was lurking in the dark behind them.
The fight had come to a dead halt, but the real nightmare in the temple was just beginning...tmare in the temple was just beginning...
