Chapter 3 - Chapter:5 After the Silence

The set was quieter now. Too quiet.

Most of the crew had moved on, cables coiled away, lights dimmed to a neutral hum. Nathan stood near the craft table, fingers wrapped around a paper cup he hadn't touched. Alex hesitated at the doorway for a second longer than necessary before stepping in.

"So," Alex said finally. His voice sounded steadier than he felt. "Guess avoiding this would've been… childish."

Nathan didn't look at him right away. "Depends," he replied. "We were always good at childish."

That earned a small, surprised huff of laughter from Alex. It faded quickly.

"Did you know?" Alex asked. "About me. Before today."

Nathan shook his head. "No. Casting email had a stage name. No photos I'd recognize." He paused, then added, quieter, "You?"

"Same." Alex leaned back against the counter. "I didn't connect it until… you looked up."

Nathan nodded once. "Yeah. That part."

Silence settled again, but this one felt less sharp.

Alex cleared his throat. "Can I ask something? And you can tell me to shut up if it crosses a line."

"You always asked like that," Nathan said. "Even before."

Alex smiled faintly. "Old habits."

He took a breath. "How did you end up here?"

Nathan's grip tightened on the cup. "You mean Midnight Crown Studio? Or this line of work?"

"Both," Alex said. "If you're okay answering."

Nathan considered. "Money, first," he said honestly. "Then… control. Funny, right?"

Alex tilted his head. "Not really."

"At least here," Nathan continued, "everything's negotiated. Lines are clear. People pretend otherwise, but this industry? It's honest about what it wants." He looked at Alex for the first time. "What about you?"

Alex let out a slow breath. "I didn't plan it. I needed something fast. Something that paid." A beat. "Then I stayed because I was good at separating myself from it."

Nathan studied him. "You always were."

Alex winced slightly. "Yeah. That."

They shared a look—an acknowledgment of a skill learned too early.

"Did you ever think," Alex asked, "that we'd run into each other like this?"

Nathan gave a short, humorless laugh. "If I'd imagined it, I'd have called it unrealistic."

"Same," Alex said. "Porn set reunion wasn't on my list of possible futures."

Nathan snorted before he could stop himself. "God."

The tension eased, just a fraction.

"Listen," Alex said, more serious now. "About back then. We were… awful to each other."

Nathan's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes softened. "We were kids trying not to get eaten alive."

"That's not an excuse," Alex said quickly.

"No," Nathan agreed. "But it's context."

Alex nodded slowly. "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I just didn't want to pretend it never happened."

"Good," Nathan said. "I hate pretending."

Another pause.

"So," Alex said, rubbing the back of his neck, "where does that leave us?"

Nathan considered the question carefully. "Here," he said. "Working together. Professionally."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "That's it?"

"That's enough," Nathan replied. "For now."

Alex smiled, relieved. "I can do 'for now.'"

Nathan hesitated, then added, "We don't have to be… tense."

Alex chuckled softly. "You say that like tension isn't our default setting."

"True," Nathan said. "But we can try not to make it worse."

"I'd like that," Alex said. "Co-workers. Friendly."

"Friendly," Nathan repeated, testing the word.

"Not friends," Alex clarified quickly. "Not immediately. Just… decent."

Nathan nodded. "Decent sounds achievable."

They both relaxed a little at that.

"By the way," Alex said, "you were good today."

Nathan blinked. "That sounded dangerously like a compliment."

Alex grinned. "Professionally," he emphasized. "You hit your marks. Stayed present."

"Thanks," Nathan said. "You didn't make it difficult."

"High praise," Alex laughed.

Nathan allowed himself a small smile.

A production assistant poked their head in. "We're wrapping for the day. Tomorrow's call time is nine."

"Got it," Alex said.

When the door closed again, Alex looked back at Nathan. "Coffee sometime? Not a date. Just… talking. Off set."

Nathan thought for a moment. Then, "Yeah. That could work."

Alex's smile was genuine this time. "Good."

They walked out together, not side by side, but not apart either.

It wasn't reconciliation.

It wasn't intimacy.

But it was something sturdier than silence.

And for both of them, that felt like a beginning.
