Chapter 226 - A Pretty Good Day

The formal dinner in Alexandria ended far better than anyone on either side had expected.

No hidden poison.

No assassination attempts.

No political ambushes disguised as polite conversation.

Jax had quietly used Appraisal and Inspect throughout the evening, checking the food, the wine, and even the intentions of several nearby guests.

Everything came back clean.

For the first time in weeks, he allowed himself to believe that the war was truly over.

The banquet hall glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Nobles and dignitaries from Alexandria and the United Kingdoms mingled cautiously, each uncertain at first how to behave around those who had been enemies only a month earlier.

The Vixens looked stunning.

Llandra wore an elegant emerald gown that perfectly complemented her long blonde hair and regal bearing.

Nyxian was dressed in a black evening dress that somehow managed to be both scandalous and aristocratic.

Bunny's light-blue gown emphasized exactly why she remained the best-selling Vixen in portraits across the continent.

Zee looked angelic in white and gold.

Pixelle and Lexi attended in their full-sized forms, both radiating confidence and beauty.

Jax, as always, preferred a perfectly tailored suit over ceremonial robes.

He looked more like a wealthy entrepreneur than a conquering warlord.

Which, in truth, suited him perfectly.

Jax and Llandra were seated at one of the primary tables.

Also present were Mathis Rhymekey, his wife, King Elarion Silverleaf, and Vaelrith.

Mathis's wife was introduced as Elise Rhymekey.

She had warm brown hair, intelligent eyes, and the composed demeanor of someone who had long ago mastered the art of supporting a military husband.

The conversation began stiffly.

Everyone was being polite.

Careful.

Measured.

Then Jax smiled at Elise.

"So, how did you and Mathis meet?"

Elise laughed softly.

"Oh, that's an easy one."

Mathis groaned.

"Here we go."

Elise ignored him.

"He was a cadet at the military academy. I was the assistant librarian."

Jax leaned forward with interest.

Elise continued.

"For months, he kept checking out books. Military history. Logistics. Engineering manuals. Poetry."

Mathis cleared his throat.

"I liked variety."

Elise grinned.

"The problem was that he never actually read them. He just kept returning them and checking out new ones."

Llandra smiled knowingly.

"So he was inventing reasons to see you."

"Exactly."

Elise nodded.

"The rarer the book, the longer we had to search together."

Llandra, smirked.

"That's actually adorable."

Elise laughed.

"Eventually I got tired of waiting and asked him to join me for coffee."

Mathis raised his glass.

"Best decision I ever made."

"And now," Elise said proudly, "we have two children."

The story broke the tension around the table like a hammer through glass.

Soon everyone was laughing and trading stories.

Eventually Elise turned to Llandra.

"What everyone really wants to know," she said with a conspiratorial smile, "is how you all manage to share one husband."

Llandra answered with her usual calm grace.

"We make time for one another. Date nights, private conversations, and intentional time together."

She looked toward the other Vixens.

"But more importantly, most of us loved each other before we ever loved Jax."

Elise blinked.

"So there isn't jealousy?"

Llandra smiled.

"Of course there is sometimes. But love is not a finite resource. None of us wanted to keep something so wonderful to ourselves."

Elise stared at her as if she had just been handed the secret to the universe.

At some point, the women naturally rearranged themselves.

Elise and Llandra sat together.

Mathis and Jax found themselves side by side.

Mathis swirled the wine in his glass.

"I have to say, your terms today were far more generous than I expected."

Jax took a sip.

"Mutually beneficial deals tend to last longer."

Mathis studied him for a moment.

Finally, he asked what had been bothering him all evening.

"How old are you, exactly?"

Jax laughed.

"Old enough to know better."

Mathis shook his head.

"No, seriously. You look barely older than some of my junior officers. Yet you negotiate like a veteran statesman and plan battles like someone who has studied war for decades."

Jax paused.

It was not the easiest question to answer.

He could not explain memories of another world he no longer fully remembered.

So he gave the closest truthful answer.

"I've always loved history."

Mathis stared for a second.

Then he smiled.

"Well, history seems to love you back."

The rest of the dinner passed pleasantly.

Jax proposed that future diplomatic meetings include Pixie Mead and Fairy Cider.

That suggestion was met with enthusiastic approval.

The aged Alexandrian wines were excellent, but even the nobles were curious about the products that had become legendary across the continent.

At one point, Jax overheard Elise and Llandra talking.

"All six?" Elise whispered, eyes wide.

Llandra sipped her wine.

"Tonight, likely eight."

Elise nearly choked.

"Eight?"

Llandra nodded matter-of-factly.

"Nyxian's mother and sister are joining us."

Elise's face turned bright red.

"And Jax just... manages that?"

Llandra gave a small, proud smile.

"He works very hard."

Elise looked across the table at Mathis, suddenly with renewed appreciation.

Mathis noticed and sat up a little straighter.

Tonight, he suspected, was going to be a very good night.

When the festivities finally ended, the delegations returned to their respective caravans.

Most guests retired to their own quarters.

The Vixens, however, found their caravan joined by two additional passengers.

Velastra Nightveil and Sera Nightveil.

Nyxian folded her arms.

"I still hate this arrangement."

Velastra kissed her daughter on the cheek.

"And yet you agreed to it."

Sera blushed.

"Thank you, Nyx."

The Vixens had already agreed on the order of the evening.

There was grumbling.

Some competitive banter.

A few strategic negotiations.

Nyxian, with a wicked smile, insisted that her mother and sister would have to wait their turn.

For once, they would understand what patience felt like.

The rest of the night unfolded exactly as everyone expected.

There was laughter.

Teasing.

Affection.

And by the end, every woman in the caravan wore the same unmistakable expression of complete satisfaction.

At one point, Jax discovered Sera draped over a couch, fast asleep and smiling dreamily.

He had apparently left her there nearly half an hour earlier.

Chuckling, he lifted her gently and carried her to bed.

The bedroom resembled the aftermath of a particularly passionate battlefield.

Bunny was sprawled diagonally across the mattress.

Zee was curled peacefully against the pillows.

Nyxian was draped possessively over Jax's side of the bed despite being asleep.

Velastra and Sera rested nearby, looking far more content than either had in years.

Pixelle and Lexi, exhausted in their human-sized forms, had collapsed among the others.

Jax stood at the edge of the bed for a moment.

He briefly considered sleeping on the couch.

There was a certain appeal to uninterrupted rest.

Then he smiled.

As chaotic as this arrangement was, he had grown to love it.

He climbed into the center of the bed.

As if guided by instinct, half-asleep women shifted toward him.

An arm draped across his chest.

A leg rested over his waist.

Someone claimed his shoulder as a pillow.

Another tucked herself against his side.

Within moments, he was thoroughly immobilized.

And completely at peace.

The war was over.

The Empire had fallen.

Alexandria remained intact.

The future looked brighter than ever.

And the people he loved most in the world surrounded him.

Jax closed his eyes.

A tired smile touched his lips.

"Today was a pretty good day."
