Chapter 12 - Chapter 1: Konohamaru’s Return

Before Konohagakure's gates, Konohamaru was enveloped by a profound sense of familiarity and relief. The sky above stretched like a vast canvas, blanketed by a serene dark hue, with the moon's gentle glow acting as a soft spotlight upon him. The village pathways were adorned with elongated shadows, each a testament to the trees and structures that populated the sprawling village. After a demanding month of traversing distant landscapes on his mission, he finally returned to his home's embrace.

Konohamaru's gaze shifted to his fellow Jonin teammates, their fatigued expressions speaking volumes about the mission's toll. Stepping into his role as team leader, he gave out his final order for the mission, "It's time for you all to head home. I'll take care of the final report to Lord Seventh." A collective glance exchange revealed a shared sense of relief as tears glistened in their eyes. They approached him and offered a supportive pat on his shoulder, an unspoken acknowledgment of their camaraderie.

"We owe you one big time, thank you," one of his comrades expressed, their gratitude laden with emotion.

"You're the best," echoed the sentiment of the second teammate.

"Yeah, I'm so tired, but don't put that in the report. I've got to make a good impression," the last one said with a hint of humor.

"Hey, the mission's over since we're through the gate," Konohamaru noted as he gestured back in the direction they'd come from.

With their parting words hanging in the air, the team dispersed, each person heading toward their individual destinations. Konohamaru's gaze lingered on his teammates momentarily. A silent acknowledgment of their accomplishments warmed his heart, and he was happy he could lead them back home. Nodding to himself, he refocused his attention and continued his stride toward the checkpoint. The village's ambiance enveloped him—the familiar rustling of leaves and occasional distant voices reminding him he was back in a place he knew well.

Acknowledging the Chunin on guard duty, Konohamaru felt comforted. These were the ones who kept an eye out for the village day and night. Their exchange of greetings was more than just a formality; it was a reminder of the everyday routine.

His unhurried steps carried a mix of eagerness and weariness as he strolled towards the Hokage Mansion. The streets he walked were adorned with hanging lanterns that swayed gently in the evening breeze, casting a warm and inviting glow. The familiar buildings, each with its own story and history, lined the path. A small vendor was closing shop, its colorful wares now covered by sheets, a sight that felt like a snapshot of daily life in the village.

Konohamaru's eyes roved over the village, taking in the familiar rooftops and windows that evoked a flood of memories. Even during his absence, the village had maintained its rhythm, and he couldn't help but feel at home as he reconnected with its atmosphere.

Entering the Hokage Mansion at night, Konohamaru stepped into a bustling entrance hall. The doors opened to reveal a lively scene illuminated by modern lights hanging on the walls, casting an energetic glow. People moved about with purpose, engaged in hushed conversations and swift motions.

A familiar voice cut through the activity. "Hey, Konohamaru, haven't seen you around in a bit," Udon exclaimed as the Jonin jogged over, his eagerness evident as he met his comrade and childhood friend.

Konohamaru's gaze followed Udon's approach. Drawing nearer, he couldn't help but notice Udon's trademark quirk – a snot hanging casually from his nose.

"Yeah, I just returned from a month-long nin suppression mission. I'm tired, and I wanna lie down," Konohamaru raised his hands into the surrender position to signify his lack of strength.

"You're not exactly glowing with health either, Udon. Caught a cold?" Konohamaru quipped with a playful smile as he pointed at the snot from Udon's nose.

"Haha, good one, Konohamaru. You know I've perfected the art of snot," Udon smirked, his tone light-hearted.

"Haha, you know, every time you mention that, it still manages to gross me out," Konohamaru chuckled, stifling a yawn with his hand.

"Yeah, go ahead and be your charming self. So, after that report, do you want to hit up Ichiraku? It's my treat since you look like you're about to collapse." Udon stated, pointing out Konohamaru's unbalanced stance.

Konohamaru fixed his gaze on Udon, his arms trembling slightly as he swiftly clasped Udon's shoulder. "Well, Udon, you're quite the guy. Thanks," he quipped, a mixture of genuine gratitude and playful sarcasm in his tone.

Udon's hand came to Konohamaru's arm, gently prying Konohamaru's grip off his shoulder. "I get it, Konohamaru. You must be starving. Dinner is my treat. We can chat about stuff later. So hurry up on your report. I'll be waiting right here for you, and then we can head out for a good meal. Oh, but if you take too long, I'm just going to go first and meet you there," Udon's tone carried a genuine sense of empathy and understanding, his words reflecting his own anticipation to satiate his hunger.

Passing by Udon, Konohamaru threw a casual wave over his shoulder, promising a quick return. His footsteps echoed through the familiar hallways of the Hokage Mansion. Along the way, he exchanged nods and brief greetings with other Jonin who moved with purpose, a shared understanding of the demands they faced.

Despite his weariness, Konohamaru focused on maintaining vitality as he approached the Hokage's office. Each step carried a weight that only those in his position could comprehend – the need to appear unaffected even when feeling dead tired inside.

As he reached the door of the Hokage's office, his gaze locked onto another familiar face stepping out of the office. A mix of emotions danced across his expression before a genuine smile formed. "Hanabi, long time no see," he greeted, his tone carrying a warm undercurrent, his hand lifting in a relaxed wave.

A soft smile graced her lips, her eyes reflecting a sense of longing as she replied, "Yeah, it's been a month, hasn't it?" She closed the distance between them with a fluid step, her arms extending in a half-embrace that seemed to carry more weight than words. Just as she was about to fully envelop him, a fleeting hesitance crossed her features, the unspoken emotions simmering beneath the surface.

"Um, I'll let you handle your report. I can imagine you're exhausted. I'll head out," Hanabi's words carried a subtle longing as she met his gaze, her eyes drawn to his ocean-blue irises.

As Hanabi moved to walk past, Konohamaru stared back at her, seizing the opportunity to surprise her. With a quick, unexpected motion, he enveloped her in a warm hug from behind, a jolt of electricity rippling through her veins.

"Ko-Kono-Konohamaru, we're at work. We can't be doing that kind of thing here," Hanabi's stammered response was a mix of surprise and resistance, her cheeks tinted with a blush.

"C'mon, just for a little bit," Konohamaru's voice held a gentle yet mischievous tone, his words creating a bridge between them, a connection of shared understanding and unspoken feelings. As his arms tightened around her, the world around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the sensation of his touch and the rhythmic beating of their hearts. In that fleeting moment, time stood still, allowing them to bask in the intimacy of the embrace.

Unbeknownst to them, Naruto had quietly left his office, having caught wind of Konohamaru's voice and intending to invite him in. However, his plans took an unexpected turn as he stumbled upon Konohamaru, who suddenly embraced Hanabi in the hallway. "Ahem," Naruto's eyes closed momentarily, and his hand moved to his mouth, a subtle clearing of his throat revealing his presence as he observed the scene with a mix of awareness and discretion.

Opening his eyes, Naruto observed the two separating to acknowledge him. Hanabi averted her gaze, composing herself before offering a bow to Naruto. "I'll be taking my leave now, Lord Seventh," she said, her voice steady as she excused herself. Without further ado, Hanabi broke into a brisk sprint, swiftly disappearing from their line of sight.

Konohamaru stepped into the Hokage's office, and as he entered, Naruto shut the door behind him. Naruto followed closely behind Konohamaru, moving past him with an uncharacteristically cold and silent demeanor.

Feeling a sudden tension in the air, Konohamaru froze, his words catching in his throat as he watched Naruto take a seat. Summoning his courage, he stammered, "Uh, Ni- um, Lord Seventh, I'm here to present my report on the month-long mission to suppress rogue nin on the border."

As Naruto settled into his seat, he clasped his hands together, heaved a sigh, and rested his chin on his raised hands, his elbows supporting his head on the desk. His expression was serious, his voice laden with a mixture of understanding but stern authority. "Konohamaru, I know you have an intimate relationship with my sister-in-law. That said, intimacy during work hours, especially the unexpected gesture I witnessed, is inappropriate."

Konohamaru audibly swallowed, feeling the weight of the situation. He collected his thoughts before responding with a respectful tone. "I deeply apologize for my actions, Lord Seventh. I acknowledge the mistake and am ready to take responsibility. I'll draft an internal conduct report and accept any consequences you deem appropriate." Bending at the waist, Konohamaru performed a deep bow, expressing his sincere remorse for the incident.

Naruto sighed, letting his arms drop and adopting a relaxed posture. "Sure thing, write up the conduct report. I'll look it over later and figure out the punishment. Might even dock some of your payment from the A-rank mission as a reminder."

Konohamaru's hands slightly shook as he raised his head to meet Naruto's gaze. "Yes, Lord Seventh." Naruto's demeanor shifted to a more laid-back state, his gaze fixed on his protege with a hint of amusement. "Seems you've got quite a soft spot for Hanabi to intentionally break the Shinobi workplace conduct code under my nose. Takes some consideration, or lack thereof."

Konohamaru's face flushed with embarrassment as Naruto burst into a hearty laugh in response to his jest. However, Naruto's laughter also alleviated Konohamaru's apprehension, assuring him that the consequences might not be as severe as he had initially feared.

With a composed demeanor, Konohamaru recounted the recent days of their return journey to Konohagakure. He detailed the terrain they had traversed, from rugged mountains marking the border between the Lands of Fire and Lightning to expansive open fields leading them closer to home.

He emphasized the team's collaborative efforts, highlighting their coordinated actions and strategies. Konohamaru described how their unique skills complemented each other, allowing them to subdue the rogue nin efficiently. He also touched on the unspoken trust that had developed among them, enabling seamless support and leadership.

This final report tied in with the updates he had submitted earlier, providing a comprehensive overview of their mission from beginning to end.

"It's good to know that the journey back went smoothly. Given the length of this mission, I want to ensure you all have a chance to recuperate. You and your team members can take a two-week break from missions with full pay. I understand the need for some time to rest and recharge," Naruto said, his tone reflecting a sense of understanding and empathy.

As the reporting concluded, Konohamaru expressed his gratitude to the Hokage. Just as he was about to leave, Naruto shifted the conversation. "Konohamaru, I want to invite you to celebrate Boruto's birthday and academy admission. It's happening in two days."

Konohamaru's surprise was evident on his face. The stress of the mission had kept him from remembering the approaching event. "Of course, Lord Hokage, I'd be honored," he replied, his tone showing genuine appreciation for the invitation.

Acknowledging with a nod and a stretch, Naruto proceeded to share additional essential details with the young shinobi. "Remember, the celebration is happening at the Hyuga clan's residence. Make sure you're dressed appropriately, but there's no need to go overly formal since it's just a family event."

Naruto's smirk returned as he continued, "Though it wouldn't hurt to make a good impression on Hiashi. You know how he is about these things." His smirk morphed into a playful grin as he pointed teasingly at Konohamaru, his words carrying a light-hearted undertone.

Konohamaru's inner cringe was barely detectable as he responded, "Sure thing, Naruto nii-chan. I'll do my best to make a good impression," his tone brimming with genuine enthusiasm as he saluted Naruto with a hint of playful flair.

Amused by Konohamaru's response, Naruto playfully mirrored the small salute, his hand resting on his forehead. He continued more relaxed, "Oh, and don't forget the birthday presents. You wouldn't want to disappoint." His words were delivered casually, yet they carried a sense of importance and seriousness.

Konohamaru nodded in agreement and respectfully excused himself from the Hokage's office. Moving quickly, he practically jogged down the hallway and left the Hokage Mansion. Almost half an hour had elapsed in what felt like a short time.

Meanwhile, Udon stationed himself near the entrance, greeting around 50 shinobi as they occasionally flowed into the mansion for their night shift. Getting a bit restless and hungry, Udon briefly contemplated the idea of heading to Ichiraku Ramen and eating before Konohamaru arrived.

Just as Udon considered his next move, he saw a familiar figure approaching. Konohamaru was sprinting toward him, an expression of urgency on his face.

"Hey, you sure took your time," Udon remarked, raising his voice slightly to catch Konohamaru's attention. Konohamaru slowed down as he approached Udon.

"Yeah, it was quite a report, and I ended up discussing a bunch of other stuff with the Hokage," Konohamaru explained, giving a tired shrug. His appearance matched his words, looking more fatigued than he had in months, with noticeable bags under his eyes.

"Seriously? I saw Hanabi bolting out of the mansion like she was on a mission. She didn't even spare a 'hello.' Are you sure you didn't pull some Konohamaru charms on her? You two and your secret dating thing is like an open secret. I know how she gets all weird and quiet around you. Not that I'm playing detective or anything," Udon remarked, his tone tinged with mischievous curiosity.

Konohamaru's expression shifted to surprise as they continued their stroll to the ramen shop. "Hold up, there's a story here. No need to spill the beans, but did you make a detour on your way to the Hokage's office?" Udon inquired, a playful glint in his eyes as he detected Konohamaru's blush.

"Nope, we didn't do anything you're thinking about. You know I'm not that reckless," Konohamaru quipped with a grin.

Udon's eyebrows arched in curiosity, a hint of playfulness in his expression. "Ah, so what exactly happened between you and Hanabi?" Udon inquired with a smirk, clearly eager to hear the story.

Konohamaru's face turned slightly red, and he let out a sigh. "Alright, alright. It's not as scandalous as you're making it out to be. I just gave her a surprise hug when I saw her leaving the Hokage's Office," he admitted with a hint of embarrassment.

Udon stared at him, surprised, and started speaking in a half-joking and teasing voice, "Well, that's a report, man. Surprising co-workers with intimate contact like that's not good, Konohamaru," As he finished his statement, Udon couldn't hold back a giggle. "I didn't know you were so touchy with the Hyuga heiress in public. Maybe you missed her a lot. You sure you wanna eat with me instead of rushing over to her place," Udon said, emphasizing the playful tease.

Konohamaru's blush intensified as he thought of the situation in a not-safe-for-work way, "No, I'll see her in 2 days at Boruto's party anyways, so I'll be fine," he replied with a weary tone, clearly showing his exhaustion.

The conversation flowed smoothly as they reached Ichiraku's and placed their orders. "So, what should I get Boruto for his birthday?" Konohamaru asked, taking a thoughtful bite of his meal.

Udon chewed and replied, "Hmm, you know the kid better than I do. Got any idea what he's into?"

Konohamaru paused. His expression was contemplative. "Well, usually, I'd give him shinobi cards since we collect them together. He's always enjoyed that. But since he's starting at the academy soon, I want to give him something more special."

Udon nodded, sipping his drink. "How about a rare card? Aren't you considered super rare in those card packs, honorable grandson?"

Konohamaru's chopsticks halted midair, irritation flaring in his eyes. "Please don't use that name. I've worked hard to distance myself from it. Plus, I already gave him one of my cards. He's got most of the rare ones already."

Udon took another bite, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Alright, alright. How about a shinobi switch console?"

Konohamaru looked at him, perplexed. "What's a shinobi switch console?"

Udon paused, a playful grin on his lips. "Seriously? Are you sure you're my age, Konohamaru? Those things have been all the rage for a while now. The academy students practically live and breathe them during breaks."

A tinge of annoyance colored Konohamaru's features, but he held his tongue. "Well, excuse me for not being an academy instructor. I go outside the village for work and adventure. It's way more fun," he retorted with a touch of sarcasm.

Udon chuckled, offering a defense. "Hey, don't knock academy work. The kids are great sometimes. Maybe you should give it a try. And you still get your fair share of adventure, even if it's not as frequent."

Konohamaru finished his meal, slightly exasperated. "Yeah, yeah, maybe, I'll think about it. These missions away from the village are really grinding me down. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. A shinobi switch console sounds like a good idea for Boruto's birthday."

As they wrapped up their meal, they exchanged farewells and went their separate ways. "I won't see you in uniform for the next two weeks, Konohamaru. Enjoy your break," Udon teased.

"Sure thing. Have a blast at work. I'll make sure to have lots of fun," Konohamaru playfully shot back before heading back to his apartment for a well-deserved rest.
