Chapter 5 - My Friend's Birthday

Two years had now passed, and as always now I have grown to the more prominent age of five, the age where is most accurate for little children to either show their talents, skills, and other form of things that their parents, especially mothers, always make them believe they are great at, at least that's what I think it should be like. After all, what do I know? It's not like I'm a child expect or anything.

The age of five was a big deal in this world of mine, due to the reason that once a child reached this age, that's where they would start to show up signs of having a little trace of magic known as mana, and it often happened around close to their birthday, maybe in their month or just a few days before the big day.

I had grown accustomed to this world, and I've taught myself to know a little bit more than what a child like my age should know, and today it was a special day. It was my day, June 26. Yeah, just because I was in a different world it doesn't mean that the months in a year are quite different from my old life, because it wasn't, it was the same.

Particularly, I was looking forward to this day, especially since I had discovered that my parents were magic, and not just them but all the people in my town, which meant that I also was bound to have magic. That was a must.

Unlike the other children, my special talents and skills were different, and just at the age of four I had taught myself secrets that even my own parents didn't even know were even in existence, cause I had not only taught myself the way of this world, but I could now not only speak just my language, but the language of other species and other continents, but that's something I chose to hide.

But nothing can ever remained hidden and kept a secret for very long, especially when it comes to the parents. Call it a parent intuitive interface or something, because when I had just turned four my dad had decided that he and his buddies from work, who lived around our town, would take me and their children to go hunting so they can show us what they really do when they are working.

So this was what actually happened. We were hunting in another forest, because it was my friend's birthday and she had just turned five, so the whole expedition was just for us to accompany her to take her new awakened abilities for a test.

As we were hunting, the adults had left us alone, cause they wanted to see if it was possible for us to hunt on our own without any help, and the beast that they had chosen for us wasn't really a top-tier beast. It was maybe a bunny, but the bunnies of this world and the bunnies of my previous world were completely different. In my old world bunnies were these cute furry animals, but here they are overgrown in size. They were an average height of a normal human child.

Here's what had happened. As we were busy sneaking around and scouting, since it was my best friend's birthday, she had decided that since she was probably older than me, even though it was just a year, she was going to be the one who takes a lead, and not just only that, but she would also be the leader.

Of course, I was against it, but since it was her birthday it was only right for me to allow her to do so. Plus, I really didn't do it because of the kindness of my heart, but I did it because I was curious about something, so you could say she was my experiment.

Her name was Portia, so both our dads had used some kind of camouflage magic to hide themselves from our prey. As you know, with those big bunny ears it could tell right away if it was about to be hunted, and so they had chosen to stay behind.

Now it was me and Portia's turn to be the hunters that our dads had brought us to be. We were both very careful about being stealthy and silence. I would be lying if I said I had any problem with remaining unnoticed, because I wasn't. In fact, it was the easiest thing that I could even do in my sleep.

The same couldn't be said about Ms birthday. Everywhere she stepped she would create a noise, making the beast be on guard.

"Hush, you know you should learn to be quiet. After all, we don't want to alert the prey that we are after it," I'd whisper to Portia.

"Please, what do you know? I mean, we both know that it's my birthday, so I can do whatever I want," Portia said in her spoiled little girl's tone.

"You know what? Fine, you do you," I replied.

The forest was really a perfect place for a predator to go after it's prey. The grass was at a right level, and it was so perfect that even the trees served as a perfect hiding spot, and we had spotted our prey.

It was a young bunny, maybe just our age. It was busy eating it's red carrots, and busy being on guard thanks to Portia's stealth mode. Every time we tried to get closer, it's ears would wiggle, alerting itself that there is danger here.

In it's defence, it did stop what it was doing and looked around it's surrounding. It was very quick, and if I wasn't on guard like I was, it was going to spot us even before I got the chance to spot it first.

Cause it's reflexes were like lightning, and it really didn't need to do much. It just turned it's head around like it was moving it's eyes, and because it could look in our direction and spot us.

I had knew what was coming, so I had no choice but to step up and warn her.

"Duck down!" I said to Portia in a whisper, as I pushed her head down.

The bunny looked at our direction. I don't know if what I did next was because I was so used to being very careful, but I couldn't help myself but cover Portia's mouth, as if I knew that she was breathing heavily.

Seriously, I have no idea what is wrong with that girl. Maybe she thought I was trying to outshine her or what, but she just chose to bite my hand, and right after I had just saved her sorry butt.

"Ouch! What was that for?" I asked, as I was trying to nurse my hand.

"I don't need your help, you idiot, I got this!" She didn't even sound remorseful, nor even be grateful that I just helped her.

And that was after the bunny had looked in our direction and didn't even see us.

"You know, a thank you has never killed anyone, ever before," I said to her.

"Stay behind and let me show you how us Handlers do our business." She pushed me as she got up.

Now, I don't know if it was just her overselling confidence or it was something that kids had, but she had just gotten up and had totally forgotten about everything our dads taught us on how to remain unseen.

She just walked like nothing was wrong, like this forest we were in was not dangerous, and it was one of the most dangerous places in the whole continent, and take from someone who spent most of his time learning about the place.

This forest was called The Hunting Forest, cause it's where most hunters came to hunt for top tier beasts that they were hired by someone to hunt, but it wasn't called that because of the hunters. It was simply called that because this was a place that the most dangerous beasts hunted on for most of the time, and though that happens only at night, that day was an exception.

As Portia headed first without any plan in motion of some sort, we really thought that nothing bad was going to happen to her, and that's not because the forest was just quiet and filled with beasts that were low tier, but we had also let down our guard, especially me, because I'm sure that our fathers also saw her but really didn't do much about it.

Portia walked towards the bunny, and she was also making up a ball of fire in her hands that were behind her. Portia was a fire type magic user, and she must have inherited that power from her father, who was also a fire type.

As she was busy doing all that, I was really trying so hard to go after her, but I just couldn't, because something had warned me to stay behind.

"You are about to be barbequed, little bunny!" Portia said, as now she was forming her big ball of fire with both her hands.

"Take this!" She said, as she was about to fire.

The bunny must have really not cared about her that much, because it was distracted with something else, and I knew that because I saw that there was a particular place that it was focused on, and whatever had caught it's attention, it was something that has raised the back of my own hair.

And even now I still beat myself about this. How on earth did I miss something so stupid?

What happened was when Portia was busy doing whatever she was doing, it turned out that the bunny wasn't just the only prey there, we were also one.

Because behind, a little bit further away from us, there was something watching over us, something really dangerous.

And it was so stealthy that even it's growling noises were hard to make out, but the feeling I had of my hair was because I felt something looking at us.
